OT- Justin Verlander a Tiger for life?
Verlander agreed to an extension through 2019, he'll make $180 million over the next 7 seasons and will have a $22 million option. Had to lock him up and they did, good job Illitch/Dombrowski.

I mean, I guess if he dies today then, yeah, he is a Tiger for life.
Let's hope that doesn't happen.

Thats a long time to sign a pitcher for, even one as durable as JV. That being said, making sure the best pitcher in baseball hopefully finishes his career as a Tiger is not a bad decision.

Just over $25mil/year actually isn't too bad of a deal for the organization considering everyone had been talking about how he was probably going to become the games first $30mil/year player.

the two years to go on his previous contract. I think his extension is right around five years for $150mil.

I just read that as "licked" instead of "kicked". I'm sure it had nothing to do with the context of doing two chicks at the same time.
I'd say Verlander is on track to end up the greatest Tiger pitcher of all time.
I'm happy to halfheartedly take up the cause for Jack Morris to get to the HOF and I'm rooting for him to get there, but when it comes to greatest Tigers' pitcher of all time, one could make the case that he's not even in the top five.
Obviously Jeremy Bonderman.
I think Jarrod Washburn has to be in this conversation too.
Only one who may have an argument against him is 2x league MVP Prince Hal Newhouser. Tough to compare him to Verlander when he pitched in the 40's though.
Great news to start the weekend. Now start off this season with a no-hitter and win another Cy Young.
because Verlander would be more expensive and the contract $$$ would be higher.
Yes, but if he has another year like two years ago, he might want an even bigger contract than what he just got.
Nice work if you can get it.
HOF monitor (http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/hof_monitor.shtml) has had JV stuck at 94 points for what seems like two seasons. Anyone else notice this? I thought he would be closer to a lock already in his career.
Yeah, that's dumb. Especially considering he is behind Andy Pettite, Mike Mussina, CC Sabathia and Troy Percival. JV should be in the hall over all of those guys.

I betcha Kate has gotta be smiling right about now
And when Kate smiles, we all smile.
Other than the fact that come 2015 the Tigers will have $90M in payroll for just four players, i'm thrilled. Not that it matters to me beyond hoping that it doesn't impinge on filling out the rest of the roster. It is impressive the way Mr. Mike runs a sports organization, and he manages the near impossible: not being cheap but also generally spending money wisely. You can't let JV go to save a few million bucks.
Verlander's loyalty is impressive too. I have a feeling that he never even thought about testing the market. He wanted to play in Detroit, they made him a solid offer, and the deal was done.
Yahoo! Sports included some snippets from Verlander's twitter account as well:
"I love this city & the fans – couldn’t be more excited to spend my career here! We’re going to bring a World Series to Detroit!!"
Justin Verlander's tenure in Detroit has seen him win both the Cy Young and MVP in 2011, not to mention being second in the Cy Young voting last year and third in 2009. He's lead the AL multiple times in wins, strikeouts, ERA and innings pitched. In my mind, that level of performance is a large part of what makes a deal like this worth it for the Tigers, and indeed, I hope to see any and maybe all of these honors a couple more times while he's a Tiger.
Mickey Lolich greatest Tiger World Series pitcher ever. Verlander has a ways to go to match Mickey Lolich
