I mean, I guess if he dies today then, yeah, he is a Tiger for life.

Let's hope that doesn't happen.

Thats a long time to sign a pitcher for, even one as durable as JV. That being said, making sure the best pitcher in baseball hopefully finishes his career as a Tiger is not a bad decision.

Thank God for Illitch. Love this news. Great way to start the day. Add a Michigan win tonight and its a perfect day. Wonder if its around 200 million.

Just over $25mil/year actually isn't too bad of a deal for the organization considering everyone had been talking about how he was probably going to become the games first $30mil/year player.

Pettitte has 5 World Series titles and the most postseason wins all time. He was also among the most dominant pitchers of the past 2 decades. JV has done a lot in comparably less time and when all is done, I expect him to have had a better individual career but right now Andy Pettitte is more of a hall of famed than Verlander

Other than the fact that come 2015 the Tigers will have $90M in payroll for just four players, i'm thrilled. Not that it matters to me beyond hoping that it doesn't impinge on filling out the rest of the roster. It is impressive the way Mr. Mike runs a sports organization, and he manages the near impossible: not being cheap but also generally spending money wisely. You can't let JV go to save a few million bucks.

Verlander's loyalty is impressive too. I have a feeling that he never even thought about testing the market. He wanted to play in Detroit, they made him a solid offer, and the deal was done.

Yahoo! Sports included some snippets from Verlander's twitter account as well:

"I love this city & the fans – couldn’t be more excited to spend my career here! We’re going to bring a World Series to Detroit!!"

Justin Verlander's tenure in Detroit has seen him win both the Cy Young and MVP in 2011, not to mention being second in the Cy Young voting last year and third in 2009. He's lead the AL multiple times in wins, strikeouts, ERA and innings pitched. In my mind, that level of performance is a large part of what makes a deal like this worth it for the Tigers, and indeed, I hope to see any and maybe all of these honors a couple more times while he's a Tiger.
