A bit hard to hear him, so turn up the volume. He was the crowd favorite and told some great jokes/stories.
OT: JoPa's speech at the BigTen Kickoff Luncheon ... Very Good!!
My favorite was how Fielding Yost made Joe Pa carry his pads when they played on the 1894 West Virginia team.
Maybe it's just me, but it seems as if JoePa's health has severely deteriorated since last season. Almost sounds as if he's had a minor stroke. Still great to hear him telling some great stories. He's everything that is right about college athletics.
that his health has declined and that this might be his last season.
about 15 years ago. Seriously, I can't believe he's still coaching. I watched a Michigan-PSU highlight video from 1997 where they were making jokes about how long JoePa had been around.
to the recent news of Joepa's health issues
It’s just that his speech was slow and slightly slurred, and his intellect seemed a little dulled and delayed — something that’s never, ever been true.
is that JoePa, despite being super old, always had that quick wit to him. I can't imagine watching a Penn State game without him roaming the sidelines, but I'm guessing we'll see it fairly soon.
Just think about it. He was around PSU when Bo started at Michigan, and Bo finished up his Michigan tenure when I was small child. Really puts it in perspective for me.
Bo was the second choice. Joe couldnt stand to leave his seniors (he started in '66 and would have left for AA in '69) and decided to stay in State College with the goal of making Penn State's football program resemble Michigan's - pretty much as done that (great success, 100k stadium, Big 10 member, generally clean program.
Paterno was also up for the Steelers job that went to Chuck Noll along with 4 Lombardis.
He was a pretty hot commodity back in 1969!
... and I can't turn up my volume either because I'm at work. Anyone want to just quote whatever he said that was garnering so much laughter?
Hopefully he didn't talk about his recent bowel problems...
JoePa was commenting during the '69 Ohio State game, so you can hear his voice from 40 years ago every couple of weeks on BTN or ESPN Classic. He was shockingly new back then. Also, it's weird to think of Penn State not in the Big Ten (I was a toddler the last time we had expansion).
it will be a sad sad day in the B10 when he hangs it up.
