OT: Joker Philips
I was at a local Golf scramble today for a kidney foundation, where I happened to be volunteering serving food to help raise money. At the scramble was Kentucky head football coach Joke Philips and former Eastern Kentucky coach Roy Kidd who is very well respected as a coach at the 1-AA level. Joker didn't play golf he was there to take pictures and sign items. He hung around us all day because we were under shade and had the beer and food.
We chatted for awhile about, football college sports, how the game has changed and so forth. Great honest guy. He found out I was not a UK fan and indeed I am a Michigan fan. I didn't want to put that on blast as he was there helping out as well and it wasn't polite. He started to talk about Rich Rod and his methods. He said Rich is a great guy and a fantastic coach. The only thing he would have liked to see him do is surround himself with better people. Something Michigan fans and I already know.
That topic led to what do I think of Brady Hoke? I told him well I think it's going to work out but, would have liked to see Dave Brandon move faster in the process. I said he has really surrounded himself with coaches who have proven themselvs already.
We spoke about Greg Mattison, Greg and Joker coached together at N.D. He said Greg is one of the best coaches he has even been around and is the best recruiter. Joker said that he refuses to go after a kid that Greg is recruiting because he knows he is going to loose and he added the guy can flat out coach.
Thinks Brady Hoke will have Michigan back on top in no time. Said Brady understands the big things about being a coach at a school like Michigan.
We then talked about what makes a good coaches from bad ones and in a simplified manner he replied how quickly your players can learn, it's all about on how you teach and how you get your message across. Most kids even at UK were all high school all-stars and they come in right away thinking they can play and can start. Some kids can't deal with sitting. It simply comes down to out working the other guy. Everyone has talent but not everyone wants to do the work. We then talked about recruiting and the methods in the SEC, he replied well it started years ago but Saban and Meyor took it to another level. He said you're forced to do it in order to even compete. If you don't you're really going to get left behind.
We then talked about USC and OSU and a particular recruit Michigan and UK went after last year. Lamar Dawson LB from Danville, KY. Who committed to USC. Joker said Lamar wanted to go there because he thought he could play right away and had big dreams but, USC has to cut 7 kids now due to over signing and Lamar might be one of those kids cut. It's a sad story.
He had a good laugh at Tressel and his ideas said he's a dirty guy doesn't recruit fair and has played ineligible players before at YSU. Also said he thinks Denard will be just fine athletic guys can always adapt more easily than guys who are not that skilled.
Joker gave me grief about App State but, he said it's going to keep happening with guys transferring to smaller schools from big schools like Michigan and OSU, and how no big schools no will play someone like that meaning a 1-AA team who is most likely going to win a national title that year. He said App State that year would have beat a lot of top 25 schools.
Interesting a coach at UK knew that much about MIchigan football.
The <enter> key is your friend.
You should see the 6th grade papers I have to grade daily.
Where's the +1 option for brave?
I am paper revised needing, please advice.
Oh, so you're an MSU professor?
At least an MSU professor might be able to discern when one of his students stole a paper -- experience, ya' know.
Definitely not too soon.
Didn't realize that i didnt hit it oops. Thats pretty sad.
Just FYI, you can go in and edit it after the fact... Feel free to add them any time you'd like.
Thanks for going back in and fixing it up. A great read, upvote!
Umm fixed so i think.
Welp, my original comment had a +5 rating before he changed it from 1 paragraph to a normal amount of paragraphs, and now the original comment is rated -1. The perils of the new comment-rating-system.
LOL, yeah it's always a problem when the OP edits because they can do it whenever they want and it doesn't show revisions. At least if you reply to a comment then it's locked in. But in this case you have your perfectly legitimate beef and one edit later, you look like a complete douche.
I gave you a plus one vote for your orig. comment
Thanks for the great insight but next time could you break it up into a frew paragraphs so it is easier to read
Is a quality individual, and I wish the UK program more success. I think we'd all be shocked to find out how much College coaches know about programs not directly related to theirs.
tl;dr
that you think its tl;dr? You couldn't take the time to read it and you wanted everyone to know it... Does someone need attention?
Interesting to hear him say that about Tressel. Most coaches won't go near saying that about another coach, no matter how true it is.
He also added he had to play those guys in order to finally win a game against the SEC. He said no way Tressel could have gone 0-10 lol. He didn't seem to like OSU much or the Hartline family.
No offense to the OP, but I'm sure he didn't plan on it being posted online.
I appreciate the OP's efforts but I think it's dubious to post some of the above info given that Phillips presumably didn't think he'd be quoted online.
I was going to say the same thing.
As interesting as the information might be, you have to realize that some things probably shouldn't be passed along. I seriously doubt that Philips would appreciate you sharing your conversation on the internet.
now ask me if i care
anyone thought you were being malicious. It's just something to keep in mind. I could have done the same thing.
This isnt my first run in with a coach like this before and knowing a few. They understand that what ever they say at all times may or may not be published. Nothing I said hasnt already been published before or said before. If he had a problem with it. The guys isnt dumb he wouldnt have said it. Also MGOBlog is awesome but im no Brain what I say hold zero truth. So its highly unlikely that that would be spun off in a negative light.
That was hilarious.
... next thing you know this is going to be in Rittenberg's blog.
All MGoReaders need to wear a badge that says, "Warning, anything you tell me, even unrelated to sports, may end up on MGoBlog."
I'm debating whether I should hop into my car, drive down the road and take pictures of the shady dealership where the Praetorian Guard of Buckeye Nation goes to get its discount cars. Would anyone be interested in seeing it? It's an epic car dealership.
Very cool to hear another coach's perspective on the Michigan situation in a non-media environment. I thought the most interesting bit from the post was Philips stating Saban and Meyer took oversigning to another level, considering Meyer coached at Florida and Florida is supposedly against oversigning.
I don't have historical numbers for Florida's recruiting classes, but I would like to see where they stand up over Meyer's tenure compared to other SEC schools. I was under the impression that Saban and Nutt (Arky and Miss) took it to another level and Meyer has been harping against oversigning behind the scenes. It would be great to hear from anyone with any knowledge or data on this.
If it weren't brutal to piece thru a single paragraph, it'd be excellent.
Edit + Enter key please.
Richt doesn't either.
You would be correct. Florida and Georgia are our hope of getting some of that cheating out of the SEC and level the playing field a bit.
a good chunk of the 80's on probation
Not for this oversigning problem, though. They've taken the lead on that in the SEC and should get their backs patted; it's what they're doing right now, not so much in the 1980's.
He touched breifly on oversigning kids but, Meyor could still be against overrecruiting but, in order to stay on top of that league your almost forced to do it is what he is saying.
Great post. He's talking out of his butt on Lamar Dawson though. USC is excited to have him. I haven't read one resource that says they'll have to get rid of anybody prematurely. Their numbers were so low from the flood of transfers, that there were spots available for a huge class. Kiffin is able to back date the guys that enroll early towards the prior class ensuring he meets conference mandates. There aren't any issues.
Philllips is probably just grinding more dislike towards everyone's favorite whipping boy Lane Kiffin.
He said they might not for sure just said those cuts gotta come from somewhere and he was wishing UK could get him after he would be released. He didn't think it was realistic just a thought.
So he basically said all the things that you wanted to hear...
I didnt wanna hear about app state I didnt wanna hear about UK and anything to do with that school which covers 95% of what he was talking to people about. Why include stuff about UK it doesnt matter nor is it even enjoyable for me to write about.
Thanks for this. But you definitely buried the lede. He said Tressel is dirty? That's a big deal.
to sum up what he was saying yea its not a word for word quote.
Nice to hear what an uninvolved coach thinks about the Michigan coaching change. I don't know if I've heard anything bad about Mattison from his colleagues.
I live in KY and the UK football team is the neglected child of the university. The basketball team is constantly getting media attention even during football season. It's kinda sad. The coaches are polar opposites. Joker is down to earth and a real person and then you have Calipari the pinnacle of douchebaggery. Well maybe a close second to Tressel.
Interesting stuff, but yeah, you should probably delete the part about Tressel. I'm assuming Phillips thought that would be expressed in confidence.
