RIP, Smokin' Joe.  Ali was my favorite fighter of the time, but having an excellent opponent made each of them better.

I think neither of them was quite the same after their first battle, a 15-round epic.

Frazier did have a good Miller Lite commercial:

One of my more memorable quotes/repetitions from my dad during my childhood was him yelling "down goes frazier" from the famous boxing call. It was never in any way relevant to what was taking place, but it always got a laugh out of me for some reason. Anybody else with this experience? Frazier will be missed, but many will never forget his impact.

From that same clip, at the 2:09 mark, Micheal Wilbon -I dont' know if he was the first to say this- commented, "I never seen a man fall up before he got knocked down".

Joe was tough as nails, an original baller. He was old school, brutal, a true warrior, and I doubt his like will ever be seen again.

A selfish something that bothers me about older celebs passing...when I was a kid and older folks passed away, I didn't know them. Maybe I heard of them but if I had I knew very little about them. My folks knew of them but I didn't, they were just myths or something. Joe might not be the best example but now the shoe is on the other foot; the 'youngins' of the present only know him from scratchy you tube clips, or from historical media of some sort, but they don't know about the real him. I do though, I lived it. Oh dear, my time is coming...

RIP Joe Frazier!!! It was a Monday night, and all we had was radio coverage giving us reports between the rounds. Frazier's win over Muhammad Ali put me in a funk for the whole week.

I am too young to have seen him fight live, but both he and Ali were two of my fathers favorite athletes ever - and as a result, I've seen the Ali/Frazier fights and an array of others through my childhood. I will say this: in a sporting commentary environment that calls everything "tough" or "gritty", there has never, ever, been a harder out than Joe Frazier. RIP, Joe
