Wait, why is this so surprising? They're not naming him a favorite, but he's probably good enough to compete for it if ND does well as a whole.

Clausen proved he could pass last year, and his receivers have another year of experience as well. Clearly he's not going to be projected as a top 2 finisher, but he's definitely going to be in the discussion if he blows opponents away this year. He obviously would need to step up his game, but if he progresses significantly he'll have a shot. TP hasn't shown any indication that he will be a great passer yet, which is why I think he's neglected. If he comes out this year and is slinging the ball all over the place, hitting receivers and avoiding interceptions in addition to his rushing, I think he'll jump into the discussion.

agreed. The kid is going to put up big numbers this year and ND is likely to win at least 8 games, both results driven by a very soft schedule. And he has two excellent receives to work with and generally no running attack. It shouldn't surprise anyone if he puts up huge numbers as ND "returns to glory" yet again while losing to USC and getting curb stomped in a bowl game.

So if Jimmah wins, do they have to change the heisman stiff arm to this? And maybe take the helmet off in favor of spiked gelled hair? Note: At work so can't do the photoshoping myself

I would worry about anyone's decision-making skills who leaves the house looking like that. Seems his category of what is "acceptable" is very broad. Someone really should have intercepted him on the way to that podium.

I guess this shouldn't be shocking. 3rd-year starter with skilled receivers, a pretty manageable schedule, plus those Weis-ian schematic advantages ... I would say dark horse is reasonable. Wouldn't be too hard to lock up the votes of the 4-5 living ND Heisman winners.

The only way he wins (or comes in the top 3) is if ND gets to a BCS game and Tate/Floyd go crazy this year.

...love that wrist. As for his actual chances, nobody does hype like ND, NBC, and their other media sycophants. If ND goes 10-2 and Jimmah has even decent stats, the media will ignore their typically weak schedule and credit him with a "Renaissance in South Bend." 10-2 will get ND into a BCS bowl which they won't have had a chance to lose before the Heisman voting; the media will project overrated ND to win that game and pretty much credit Jimmah with the victory before the game is played. I don't think he will win, but 10-2 will be enough for a trip to New York as a "finalist." I hope they go something like about 7-5, but this looks like they could go 9-3 really easily.

Not sure why this is hype, if this isnt the same article they ran back in march, it looks identical. Though SI's, espn's, rivals' and scout's lists all look exactly the same so if its now hype so be it. If ND is 10-2 Clausen will have more than "decent" stats.

I heard he helps Brady Quinn wax his chest hair, which may go a long way with the voters. But seriously, expect him to be throwing the ball 40x/game and assuming his o-line improves for the second year in a row, he'll be laying on his back less and improving upon his completion percentage (60.9%) furthur.
