OT: Jim Tressel today

Submitted by goblue20111 on

Does anyone else think that the whole Jim Tressel ceremony today was a way for OSU to basically throw up an enormous middle finger to the rest of the world.  I can't help but wonder if that they don't land Urban Meyer and/or their season is not going the way it is, he's not there.

Tressel did exactly what he was hired to do: Beat Michigan at all costs.

Between 1976 and 2000, the Buckeyes had only beaten us 7 times I believe.  Ohio had good teams but they were losing several difference-making in state recruits to Michigan.

Tressel, a coach with a history of cheating, was hired.  Recruits/players got money, cars, hookers (pro or semi-pro), tats, drugs, etc...  Those difference making players stopped coming north.

Ohio started beating Michigan nearly every year, won a NC and make appearances in two others.

The cost for an incredible decade?  One season of wins removed from the record-books (near meaningless), miss a bowl game, lose a few scholarships and upgrade to a better coach.

They keep most of their wins over Michigan, their NC, their other bowl appearances, the increased revenue from donations and sales that comes from having a successful team, etc...

From a purely economic standpoint, ignoring any of the moral issues (which they don't care about) was it a worth while trade?  The standing ovation says it all.  Yes, it was worth the cost.

They, like many teams, have put winning above all else. Maybe I'm naive, but I believe winning the right (ethical) way is the only way to win. I think Hoke wants us to do it the right way, and I hope he is able to.

Also, regarding the OSU record from 76 to 2000, people often forget how streaky of a rivalry this is. If you look at the history, the series began with a period of Michigan dominance, then ohio ruled the late 20s to mid 30s (except for a couple of solid years by Michigan), then Michigan ruled the 40s, then ohio ruled the 50s and 60s until Bo arrived. Michigan ruled the rivalry from 88 to 2000, and now ohio does. Outside of the period of 1969-1987, this rivalry has been lopsided for decades at a time.

Hopefully, our turn is coming soon (I'd be happy with another 10 year war).
