OT - JH Has a Pick-up, or, It's 'Pick Up Truck Thursday'

Mates,

Assume that JH has mandated that all mgobloggers must drive a pick-up truck, as he does, though it doesn't have to be a Ford.   Assume also you are not overly constrained by budget issues.  What make, model, year, drive-train and power option do you get for your pick-up?

Some of you have no need or desire for a pick-up, but play along anyway.   This should be particularly easy for you folks that own an SUV of some sort, which is really the kissing cousin of the pick-up (ask someone from ohio if you don't know what 'kissing cousin' means).

Have a great, warm, sunny Thursday, and remember, T-minus 35 days until no more OT threads....

perhaps the old stand-by of 'lighten up francis' would be better.  after all, francis is one of those names that might go either way.

The company I work for has a fleet of Ram trucks. I drive one with 6k miles on it. It is pure garbage as is every other Ram in the fleet. Not to mention the huge buyback the government is forcing down Fiat- Chryslers throat.

My own truck otoh is a Ford F250. By far the superior vehicle in every way imaginable. Buy American. Italians know nothing about trucks.

LOL, a little biased aren't

LOL, a little biased aren't why.  Research has always shown that truck buyers are blindingly loyal to their own brand.  Enjoy that aluminum can Ford F-150 and you will be even more sorry once you see the insurance costs as fixing aluminum is more costly than good old steel.

Wasn't going to comment here

But every time I see that stupid commercial about the aluminum cage or hear an ignorant comment about aluminum vs. steel, I start twitching. Do you know what alloy they're using? I don't, but I do know that Ford knows how to make a damn good truck, and their engineers know more than either of us about it.

The aluminum will probably be significantly lighter and at least as strong as the steel being currently used. Now take a step back, consider that maybe Ford's engineers know a hell of a lot more than you, and stop making a fool of yourself.

The aluminum can part was tongue in cheek, sarcasm - sorry that you could not figure that part out, however, it is a known fact that it is more expensive to repair aluminum than steel.  Stop making a presumptious fool out of yourself as you have no idea what I do and what I may know about this topic.

I'm not brand loyal at all.

I'm not brand loyal at all. I've owned 2 jeeps, a lincoln, 3 fords, and a chevy truck. I currently drive a Chevy truck and a brand new jeep. And I'm here to say that you are right. The Dodge trucks are absolute junk. I drove one for a company for over a year, and it was junk. Probably the worst truck I have ever driven. I currently drive a Nissan Frontier for work with a 4 cylinder. It would be a close call as to which one I would drive if I had to choose one.

truck, as I've never needed one, but the new F-150 is nice.  If $ was no object I'd take a Platinum model with the 3.5 ecoboost engine.

I totally agree, I'd like to have myself a new pimped out F-150.

I like my Fusion Sport with all options but would like the high ride able to see in traffic and the reduction in aholes(who are probably busy tweeting recruits while driving) cutting me off 10x daily on my commute.

While I will never own a

While I will never own a truck, if I had to get one I'd probably go with the 2006 Dodge Ram SRT-10. Maybe even go back to the 1991 GMC Syclone. If I'm getting a truck, I'm getting something fast at least.

The Lightning is fine, but it

The Lightning is fine, but it doesn't have the novelty of the Viper engine like the SRT-10, nor the old-school appeal of the Syclone. I'd love to see Ford to do something ridiculous like put the GT500 engine (or the powerplant for the upcoming GT) in an F150, but that won't happen.

I assumed this was picking a factory truck, not taking an existing one and boosting them. In that case I'd still take the SRT-10, then let Hennessey put a pair of turbos on and have myself a pickup that puts down about 1000hp. Totally useless? Yes, but I also have no use for a truck in general.

Is that the truck

with the twin-turbo V6?  I vaguely remember reading about it in Car and Driver and they we're pretty impressed with its performance.  0-60 in under 5 seconds IIRC, which was pretty damn uncommon for the era.

Everything seemed so modern, I couldn't imagine advertising would seem dated at the time. ;-)

Not Sure - It Was a Detroit Diesel

and i think at that time it was a penske owned outfit.  it was a great engine that with a turn of a screw could nearly double the horsepower.   i think in general it was before detroit was really embracing diesels (i have for decades) and hopefully they will come back to diesels.  it is the safest fuel, the best mileage, and i can make it in my barn for all our rigs, tractor included.

I never understood why they

I never understood why they didn't go Diesel earlier with SUV's. The big complaint was with mileage. Diesels would have solved that. And, they are tailor made for an SUV: tons of torque for towing and hauling.

I buy a truck to be a truck. I have no use for showiness and speed although a comfortable ride and interior is a plus. I want power and towing capacity. I live on 40 acres and have several horses and cows and need to haul feed, plow the driveways, bring lumber and such from the yard to my property and haul the livestock trailer and fifth wheel.

I'm currently looking

for a truck. I've spent countless hours researching pros and cons of Chevy, Ford, Dodge and Toyota. So far, I've come to the conclusion that Brand loyalty not only exists but is over the top when it comes to trucks. I'm leaning toward an '08 or newer Tundra, as it will be my daily driver and the vehicle that represents my newly founded kitchen company. Any advise from current/ past owners would be greatly appreciated.

I do find it unfortunate that people in Michigan are so xenophobic when it comes to automakers (though, of course I know why they are). I happen to own an Chevy because I got a good deal on it, but there's a reason Toyota is among the top in sales year after year.

Chevy or GMC

I usually have a Ford for work that the companies have issued over the past 15 years.  I personally own a Chevy.  For me the Chevy has a more comfortable seat and ride than the others, especially if it will be used more for a daily driver.  I've driven the Chevy to MI many times over the past 5 years and hauled a trailer with my ORVs and it never missed a lick whether we were going through the mountains or congested city traffic.  Just my opinion though.

F-150 with Ecoboost or Ram with Hemi. Either way I would want four doors and a full sized bed.

Do any trucks have AWD or automatic 4wd?

I live in a snowy area and shifting into 4 is a pain, and my experience with trucks and their light rear ends is that you have to shift into it a lot.

Ford Ranger Global

I live oversees, and see them on a regular basis. A decent size truck that can pull the type of stuff that I need hauled and is decent on MPGs, yes please. I want the inline 5 diesel, Four door, 4x4.

It pisses me off to no end that Ford negleted to update the Ranger in any significant way for 15+ years, them blamed consumer taste for the plummetting sales. Then they release a Ranger, with a diesel no less, but you can't buy it in North America. I think they are worried about cannibalizing F-150 sales and that might cause the F-Series to not be the largest selling line of trucks. I wish they would just rebrand it the F-100 (a historic badge) and then they could clame it as part of F-Series sales.

It also sucks that there is a 25% chicken tax if I wanted to buy one over here and then bring it home when we return to the States

2008 Chevy/gmc 2500 with

2008 Chevy/gmc 2500 with duramax Allison trans

Or

2005-2007 dodge 2500 with 6 speed manual

Both 4x4 long bed quad cabs. Either one will do. Have had the pleasure of using both models through work. Similar fords from those years are train wrecks.

If it's a ford diesel...it must be 7.3 liter power stroke I think from early 2000's And older. We still have some of those running better then their newer counterparts.

The holy grail all work no play truck is by far the 12 valve cummins dodges from late 80's to late 90's. Some of those late 90's models in 4x4 with 5sp manual still sell for $12k.

I I had to pick one out of all the brand new trucks based on looks it's the 2500 RAM with cummins and I think 8 speed tranny now.

Those are my favorite trucks.

All the gas ones are the same to me save 3 areas where they are better or worse. I've owned or driven them all for work. Chevy is more comfortable, ford tows better, dodge is in the middle of both but will not hold up to work use.

I know nothing of the Japanese counterparts. I will probably never buy one unless I get work experience with it. I have nothing good or bad to say about them. Although, I live in Indiana where they assemble the Tundra. There are a lot of them around.
