OT - Jets Close to Deal with Revis??

Submitted by mattbern on

A friend just showed me the following tweet by Tim Cowlishaw:

Revis and Jets announce new deal, probably Wednesday. You heard it here first. "Inside information!"

While I am not optimistic about this actually happening (i am a Jets fan), I am hopeful that it is indeed true.  Not only could the Jets benefit from not having that distraction, but they would get their best defensive player and one of the best defensive players in the league back on the field with plenty of time to prep for week 1.

Typically, I side against the players on contract disputes, but the Jets really dug a hole for themselves after talking him up as being the best CB in the NFL and telling him last season that they would take care of him.  The biggest issue is that they haven't offered him a reasonable amount of guaranteed money.  Ive been hoping they would offer him some sort of one year deal to get him some money this season (his contract this season is under $1 million), and then figure out something long-term once the labor issue is sorted out in the off season.  I guess we'll see what happens though.

Whats wrong with playing for the contract you already signed?  In my mind this would be the equivilent of a team not giving a player garenteed money b/c he didn't meet expectations (And I'm not talking about breaking rules that are in the contract).  And we know with the player's union that wouldn't fly.

Matt, I was totally excited to live with you, until I saw this. Revis has been greedy. No need to put all the blame on him, I know neither side has been reasonable, but to expect more than Asumwhateverhisnameis, who got an out of control contract from Al Davis is unreasonable.

Anyway, I hope the report is true. Go ask Neil Schwartz yourself. Also, see you on wednesday.

I'm not saying I completely agree with Revis's argument, but what i really wanted to say is that the Jets as an organization didn't do themselves any help by talking him up so much and then not being so loyal to some players (Leon Washington and Alan Faneca) this past offseason.  He just wants to make sure he'll get his and wont get screwed over if he gets injured like Leon was.  IIRC Leon held out before last season and ended up playing under his original contract instead of working out a new one.  After his injury the Jets dealt him away and he never got more money.

They moved him to saftey, so Revis has no effect. That being said, not only has he been sidelined with a head injury, reports are that he has been up and down in camp. Hopefully he can pick it up...

That's why this report is so surprising. Also surprising is the reporter who tweeted (twat?), who has nothing to do with the Jets. Some believe he may have a friend in HBO/Hard Knocks (he was reporting on the Cowboys when they did Hard Knocks there). Others believe he may have confused the Revis contract with the Mangold contract negotion, which apparently is close. If you're interested, this is a good blog for updates. It's no mgoblog, but its as good as it gets for Jets blogs.

Personally, as a Jets fan I side with the management. I think that in good faith they acknowledged that he's outplayed his contract (which he held out for his rookie year) and want to make it right. Making it right does not mean matching an Al Davis blunder. I think Revis' agents, uncle (who successfully held out years ago) and entourage are too greedy and unwilling to budge. Hopefully we reach a compromise soon.

I don't know where you got that sense from. According to the limited bits that I've read, Ryan and the rest of the Jets staff were impressed with Warren and felt lucky to snatch him up undrafted. Unfortunately he's been injured and didn't play in the first preseason game; don't think he got in the second either. Still, I think the coaching staff knows they have a potential contributer and until I read (or see on Hard Knocks) anything negative other than his injury, I'd be surprised if they cut him.

... is that they aren't, as a rule, guaranteed.  The career in the NFL is shorter than any other professional sport.  One nasty hit and you are (a) paralyzed or (b) concussed and a strong candidate for premature dementia or ALS.

If you were ever an employee with some leverage (coming in news or in huge market demand) you take the reigns and work it for all its worth.  It only happens once for many.

If Woody Johnson doesn't want to pay, he doesn't have to. And if D Reavis is willing to sit out the year and forego a huge amount of money (I heard $20 million or so) then so be it.

I don't like the way all players work their contracts, but for the life of me I've never understood why so many fans side with billionaire owners and think the players are greedy.

Every play in the NFL could be someone's last.

I couldn't care less about Woody Johnson orother billionaire owners. That's not what this is about. It's about building and maintaining the best team possible. Mangold and Harris are in the last year of their contracts (unlike Revis who has 3 yrs left), and we've got Braylon, Holmes, and Cromartie playing one year deals right now. The difference between 16 mil and  13 mil per year will have no impact on Revis being able to "put food on the table," but could have a big impact on the team and his teammates.
