OT: Jayru Campbell Update

Submitted by Yo_Blue on

In discussions at work yesterday, the topic of Jayru Campbell came up.  No one knew what had become of him so I decided to look him up.

Jayru is playing for the Garden City Community College in Kansas.  GCCC is 1-1 this year and Campbell is the starting QB.  He is listed as 6-5 / 200 lbs.  His game stats are as follows:

Game 1 (36-28 win)

27-56 passing for 293 yards, 4TD with 2INT, 33 rushes for 34 yards

Game 2 (35-40 loss)

23-40 passing for 390 yards, 4TD with 3INT and 1FUM, 19 rushes for -50 yards

There is NO RUNNING GAME for GCCC.  The only RB to carry the ball has 4 rushes for -23 yards.  CC football appears to be more 7-on-7 like than even your basic high school game.

Hopefully, Jayru can get his act together and become a better fit in society.  He'll have a year or two to try to convince some school to take a chance on him.  At this point, I'm not sure even Dantonio would give him a second look.

I see him and imagine the video with him taking out the security guard. I also think "Sparty". Then I remember that he was released from jail, returned to school and assaulted a 17 year old girl. I also hope he finds his way for all of our sakes. I just don't think of him as anything more than a young man that blew a great opportunity multiple times.

Campbell was slated to be a QB at our secondary rival, and seemed to have all the potential in the world before he repeatedly made idiotic choices.  The fact that he is a Detroit area athlete increased my interest.  I clicked on this thread to see how things had shaken out for a young man who was recently very troubled.

Jayru Campbell is a fascinating case-study, IMO, of the ill-effects of blowing smoke up the ass of a h.s. athlete.  His sense of entitlement didn't come from nowhere.  It is on him to get past that, and show himself to be something other than a jackass.  I hope he gets there (and may have already gotten there), and appreciate updates on a young man who was of interest to most (rabid) Michigan fans.

Thanks to the OP for posting this.

see basically Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm then assault on a female as an issue of "entitlement," I see it as an issue of a very disturbed personality that lacks basic impulse control.  I hope that he is closely monitored by coaches/faculty/security to ensure he does not hurt anybody.

I don't get why a sense of entitlement can't coexist with poor impulse control.  Campbell, to me, has exhibited both.

  • Case 1 - He attacks a security guard, potentially causing great bodily damage to the unsuspecting and smaller man.  Is this poor impulse control?  Of course.  Does it also exhibit a sense of entitlement?  To me it sure does.  (It's a sense of "who the fuck is this lowly security guard to tell me, star athlete, to lower my hood?!)

  • Case 2 - He gets jealous that his (ex?) girlfriend has been communicating with another young man, and forces her mobile phone from her and destroys it.  Is this poor impulse control?  Of course?  Does it also exhibit a sense of entitlement?  Of course ("that's my girl, and I determine who she texts and who she doesn't text").

Put it this way, Campbell certainly had serious issues, and it's best for all if he gets the help needed to address those issues.

I guess.  He seems to be a very violent person.  Of course it is best for society at large if he does not re-offend but he does not hold any special place in my heart where I am all "best of luck to you, sport" because he played football in Detroit.  I hope the other students are safe, that is all I am saying.

I've got no special place for Jayru Campbell in my heart either.  From all I've seen he has acted like a total jackass.

It's just that, as I've gotten older, I'm not so quick to write off the prospects of someone who has made even several mistakes.  My sentiment of "I hope he turns it around" essentially extends to all young offenders, with no special place for athletes in that sentiment.  What makes Campbell interesting to me is that he had such great prospects, and pissed them away so visibly.

enough.  It is just my opinion that our "thoughts and prayers" on-line culture has resulted often times to lending encouragement to people that have done nothing to earn it.  There is always the hope that young people can turn it around, but I personally also hope that he blows this fourth chance and strikes again that he is not given the opportunity to do so again.

I find it slightly disturbing that your impression of Campbell is extreme entitlement, but you keep saying that he should get more chances. How is giving more chances to someone like that going to help?

He had a golden goose egg. The judge gave him the opportunity to have all of his charges dropped if he completed the first time offenders program, except he violated the terms before even getting out of prison, then again hours after being released.

He's gone through 2nd, 3rd and 4th chances. Stop making him into a sob story and see him for what he really is.

I think you're reading more into this than what I said.  Where did I say "he should get more chances"?  And I also never "made him into a sob story".  You seem to be projecting those notions into this exchange.  He is not a victim here - as I said several times he's acted like a jackass, and it's on him to turn this around.

I'm just saying that since Campbell has gotten yet another chance, I hope he turns it around and makes the most of it.  I hope he gets his head screwed on straight.  I hope he solves his impulse control and anger issues.  I hope he gets a good education.  Hell, I hope he has a successful, productive, and happy life.

But none of that means that I support the free passes that Campbell seems to get on the reg.

And I'd also suggest that none of us necessarily "see him for what he really is".  Time has passed, and it's possible he's used this time to gain control of himself and become a better person.

That's cool I guess. If he can work through his obvious issues with violence (domestic and otherwise) he may be able to work his way to a 4 year degree somewhere. Fingers crossed for him, insofar as i would wish anyone well when they have a second (or third, or fourth?) chance to turn their life around.

I could have sworn I saw on Twitter that he busted off a big run last week, like 80 or 90 yards or something. Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe it got called back or something.

Sometimes you can't just "wish someone the best". Sometimes they're just bad people who don't deserve the best, who've gotten multiple choices and chose to screw then all up.

This will be the true test to see if Jayru can make it. Being far way from his old neighborhood and surroundings hopefully will be what's best for him

FWIW, Jay Harris is now at Div II Indiana University of Pennsylvania, his fifth program since the 2013 video shown above.

EDIT: Not so fast my friend - DatBull is not listed on their roster but there is no word why.  I'd research more if I gave a damn about the kid.  The IUP roster does include Drew Harris, a Michigan RB recruit from the same school as DatBull (Downington East HS in Exton, PA).

I know the OP has a wealth of MGoPoints and all but let's save stats on Campbell until after our season. I really hope we don't get weekly updates on a kid who committed a very serious act of violence that could've ended up much worse than it did. I'm all for youngsters getting another chance, as I think most of us here on the board have had a few but I think one end of the season update would do the trick and probably be more informative/comprehensive.

But that's just like... my opinion, man.
