OT - Jayru Campbell Arrested...Again

Submitted by We Do Not Sow on

I'm sure many of you remember the story of Cass Tech QB Jayru Campbell. For those of you who do not, here is a refresher: Jayru was a one time Michigan target (never offered but I believe he visited a couple times) and Michigan State commit who was sent to jail earlier this year after body slamming a security guard at his school.

Per a tweet from The D Zone (they follow HS players in MI) today at 4pm EDT, Jayru Campbell was released from prison this afternoon.

Per a tweet from The D Zone at 6pm EDT Jayru Campbell has been arrested again.

At first I thought I had read a tweet from months ago. I did not. Apparently, and amazingly enough given the NFL news this week, Jayru has been arrested for assaulting his girlfriend. The story is still developing, but here is a link to the breaking story on Channel 4 News Detroit:

He is most certainly not going to receive an offer to play for a D1 school any longer, which is a shame, as he had a lot of potential. Hopefully he can get himself the help he needs. There is no excuse for assaulting someone you supposedly love.

That kid is an absolute moron. I know some people will say "Best of luck to him" and "I hope he finds success in the future."

Screw that.

I hope somebody who's not a jerk gets the luck and success. I hope people like Jayru Campbell become hermits and can just live the rest of their lives without hurting someone else.

Yeah, screw that!  I specifically hope he DOESN'T find success in the future!  After all, his problems are completely his own doing and definitely have nothing to do with his upbringing or environment.

Obviously, he must face the consequences of his actions, which are reprehensible, but nothing irritates me more than a bunch of white dudes sitting around condemning people who have been affected by life experiences they will probably never understand.

I think people equate success with financial windfall. I equate it with finding happiness and stability. With that definition, I do hope he is successful in life. Currently he is harming others and himself. I hope he is successful in rectifying that behavior and finding a little slice of happiness in his clearly troubled life.

I don't care what "life experiences" he's had. As a junior in high school, he knew that it would be wrong to body-slam a school employee. As a senior in high school, he knew that it would be wrong to attack his girlfriend. He did/allegedly did those things, anyway.

There's no society in which everyone is successful. I'll spend my time rooting for the hardworking, good-hearted people of the world to find success.

And frankly - while we're talking about things we don't like - I don't like the insinuation that there's some kind of racial prejudice in my statement, as if a white dude who body-slams a school employee or hits his girlfriend would be given a free pass. Johnny Manziel hasn't done anything as bad as Jayru Campbell, and I also think Manziel is a moron. Am I somehow racist for disliking Manziel, too? Or is it more likely that I just dislike assholes?

"I don't care what "life experiences" he's had."

Yes, I know. That's the problem. Jayru Campbell has been assaulting people since early high school, and you rely on the absurdly simplistic argument "screw him, he should know better" instead of taking a hard look at what might be the underlying cause of these problems and realizing that maybe his actions are rooted in circumstances over which he had little control.

The question here is not whether he knew it was wrong.  The question is whether his upbringing has contributed to his inability to resist actions that he knew to be wrong. You're most likely a fairly wealthy white man who has never had to deal with the things Campbell has had to deal with. It would be nice if you could muster the intelligence to recognize that basic fact instead of ignoring it and wishing harm on someone you don't even know.  A little empathy goes a long way, especially for those who least deserve it.

Please identify where I wished him harm.

All I said is that I will root for other, less violent people to be successful and lucky. Nowhere did I suggest that I wish him bodily harm, disease, personal tragedy, etc. You're making things up.

Dude, chill out. If you look at the root cause, there is always a reason. How you come out of it is up to you. There is Mental Health system that can help him. If he doesn't seek help, what are you supposed to do. Look at Clark. He had problems. Came to M. He had a bump, but seems to have straightened out. Kudos to him. It is not like everyone in a tough spot will not come out. It depends on what they want to do. Don't expect everyone to root for him because he had a bad childhood. This is America and a land of opportunities. You want help? There are plenty of places to get one. Like Magnus, I would rather cheer for someone who wants to do something better in life, like Clark, than a guy who keeps getting in trouble. Hope Campbell gets help. But I am tired of everyone trying to uplift a guy, who doesn't what to be uplifted. Go good kids. You deserve it. Make good choices and be strong.

Variants of:

"Am I racist for thinking..."

"Some of my best friends are black, but..."

"I'm not a racist, but...."

"I'm not an anti-______, but..."

"I don't condone domestic violence, but..."

"I don't usually watch Fox and Friends, but..."

"I don't always kill 5 hookers at SMU, but...."

etc.  I think this is in Strunk & White towards the back somewhere.

To me, I do not care about his football potential. He is young, but he should know better than to assault a staff member at his school, and his girlfriend. It will not be a "shame" when he gets what he deserves. Multiple strikes warrant a steep penalty.

If Wilcher doesn't kick this kid off Cass Tech, just....wow.

They had his backup, 2017 Rodney Hall start against Oak Park and they won. They'll be just fine without Jayru. Hall went 13/20 for 178 yards.

The PSL is just awful outside of Cass Tech and King. Maybe EEV.

He was released from prison today, and then went right back into the clink.
