OT: JaMarcus Russell arrested for controlled substance

Submitted by Geaux_Blue on

Not exactly oxycodone but still the last thing he needs nowadays...

Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was arrested today for possession of a controlled substance, according to the Mobile County Sheriff's Office.

The substance was codeine syrup, spokeswoman Lori Myles said.

Myles said Russell was arrested at his home early this afternoon during an undercover investigation.  He was booked into Mobile Metro Jail at 4:22 p.m.   Russell was released minutes later after making $2,500 bail, according to online records. (link)

The Al Davis curse lives on...

Never sipped on syrup personally so I can't judge it's drinkability. What I do know is that Jamarcus isn't doing himself any favors right now. He needs to drop about forty pounds for starters and for god's sake man stop sipping on syrup. My prediction is he is in next years hot dog eating contest.

is the most hilarious sports-related cold remedy story since Romanian gymnast Andreea Raducan had an olympic gold medal taken away in 2000 after testing positive for Sudafed.

Also... Andreea Raducan is now hot:

Tennnessee won it all in '98, the year after Manning graduated.

I don't think it makes much sense anyway. LSU finished with two losses in both 2006 with Russell and in 2007 without Russell. The difference is that in 2007 LSU got into (and won) the SEC title game and managed to sneak into the title game with two losses. Maybe they don't make it there with Russell if he hadn't gone into the draft, but he was 21-4 in two years as a starter.

Obviously that doesn't make him a great NFL prospect, but I'd prefer to criticize him for his actual failings.

I have tried it, and all it does is make you super lazy. Well it kinda f**ks you up, and makes you lazy. So he must of been using this shit for the past few years. If you wanna get a sample, you can go into most convenient stores and purchase a drink called "Drank". It almost taste just like it. Basically you mix the promethazine with Sprite and it turns purple, conveniently the drink you buy in the store has a purple can. But contains melotonin, to make you feel drowsy. Don't judge me, I just tried it. Actually kind of good, but to much can kill you. RIP DJ SCREW!

I sure am glad the Lions had the second pick in 2007 instead of the first.  It's difficult to imagine the Lions being worse than they have been the last two years, but I shudder to imagine what would have happened if they had "earned" the first pick and taken Russell.

If JaMarcus is going to be arrested for having a controlled substance, at least let it be some performance-enhancing drug that shows his is actually trying to get in shape.  I always thought he was overrated, but to be out of the league this quickly is Ryan Leaf-ian.

The last thing he needs is a viable case for the Raiders to try and win back his guaranteed money for breech of contract.  Drank isn't exactly running meth, and he shouldn't have a problem with $2500 bail.

I'm sure they have their reasons, but were the cops really conducting an undercover investigation to catch nefarious cough syrup junkies?

Not sure about Alabama law, but at least in Michigan it is legal to by whats called Robatussin AC over the counter. Which is basically cough syrup with codeine.  If it was in Michigan he probably wouldn't have even got arrested...unless he had like 40 empty bottles in his trunk.

He got paid millions for what he did in college.

First round picks are paid based on past (college) performance as much as expected performance in the pros... probably more based on past. No offense to the Lions fans, but does Stafford deserve to be paid way more than Tom Brady?

Russel had a good college career and a great agent and got paid because of those two things.

And... he's been a terrible pro and is probably out of the league forever

If you are going to break the law and dabble in controlled substances, then I hope you have the presence of mind to choose a substance worth your illegal dabbling. Where was your cost/benefit weighing, Jamarcus? Codeine? Really? Codeine?!

You risked one of your last chances at NFL unembarassment on something that is to cough syrup what indomethacin is to ibuprofen--barely stronger yet nonetheless illegal when used outside a prescription's purview? Dumb. If you need an unhealthy and immature way of coping, find heroin. At least that way, when others say "He risked everything for nothing" they'll have to rebut "But, in his head, I'm sure it was something." Not so this time, home-bro, not so.

I wake up every day and thank god for this man...Lane Kiffin wanted to draft Calvin Johnson...Davis wanted Jamarcus Russell...Dear God, Thank you for Al Davis being born half-retarded and making enough money to own a football franchise...Amen.
