Jadeveon Clowney runs 4.47 40-yard dash

All I can do for my reaction is this pic of Warren Sapp's reaction:

Crazy a guy that big can move that fast.

EDIT: Sorry forgot the link

I had not watched that play in a long time. Seeing it again, I sadly realize Clowney isn't the only one bursting through the line almost unblocked. Apparently the Lewan/Kwiatkowski missed assignment wasn't the only one. When will the O-Line of infinite sorrow end?

I think Clowney is going to be a bust. Not because of his athletic ability, but because he takes too many plays off. If that was happening when he wasn't paid yet, imagine what it'll be like when he's collecting those checks. People down here (SC) aren't as fond of him as you'd imagine they would be. Everyone will say "yeah but when he's just a pass rush specialist he'll be fine" and then I just think that downs his value a bit. Freak athlete for sure, cornerstone of a franchise...I doubt it.

As impressive as that time in the 40 is, I think it'll set the expectation higher.  Coaches and GMs will know he can go that fast when he applies himself, so when they see him slacking they'll know its a matter of motivation.  I hope that its just a matter of him being "bored" last year that led to this impression of him.  I hope he has a good career.

And yeah....HE WAS UNNN BLOOOOCKED!  :-)

I don't think he is going to be as big a bust as Mike Mamula from years past - but expectations are so high for Clowney it will be difficult to meet them.  Houston will smokescreen teams and try to entice them to trade up for a king's ransom.  Not worth the cost IMHO.  Who was the last D-Lineman picked in top-5 that was crazy good?  Mario Williams disappeared to Buffalo.  Suh has been good but worth what he costs under the old CBA?  Doubtful.

I have 9 Defensive Ends drafted in the top 5 overall since 2000, two of those were last year (Dion Jordan, Ziggy Ansah) and its too early to tell how good they are but Ansah looks aiight (8 sacks as a rookie). That leaves us with 7:

  • Mario Williams - All-Pro in 2007, 2008, 2013
  • Julius Peppers - 6 time All-Pro
  • Justin Smith - 5 time All-Pro
  • Chris Long - has not made all-pro, but has 33 sacks the last three seasons.
  • Tyson Jackson, Gaines Adams, and Courtney Brown were busts.

Those look like pretty good odds of finding a GREAT DE to me.

The value vs CBA is an awkward benchmark, Suh is probably the best at is position. The messed-up-ness of the CBA at the time is the Lion's problem, not his.

13 years of DE drafted in top-5, 3 were Pro Bowlers (<25%).  But I also am comparing the value of this position that high relative to others.  There are those who believe the Texans should take him first overall - and ignoring the need for a potential Franchise Quarterback.  This is where I say people are calling him a savior - and none of the 3 DE you highlighted as Pro Bowlers are that.  They just can't have the impact on a team that a #1 QB can.  But because of his combine numbers and reputation, someone will overlook other needs for the "flashy" name.

Check your math, 3 out of 7 is 43% and we're throwing away Chris Long like he's worhless. Those three have each been named all-pro at least 3 times. Meanwhile, how many QB's drafted in the top-5 overall since 2000 have been named All-Pro? Answer: zero.

Here's the list, show us where the savior is:

Andrew Luck
Robert Griffin III
Cam Newton
Sam Bradford
Matthew Stafford
Mark Sanchez
Matt Ryan
JaMarcus Russell
Vince Young
Alex Smith
Eli Manning
Philip Rivers
Carson Palmer
David Carr
Joey Harrington
Michael Vick

There are some decent QBs there, but none of these guys qualify as 'saviors'. So, who would you rather bet on: Jedeveon Clowney or Teddy Bridgewater/Johnny Manziel/Blake Bortles?

Obviously Clowney can destroy worlds when he's at his peak motivation.  But why doesn't he do that all the time?  If a team is using a top-5 pick in the draft, they don't want Albert Haynesworth, who was the DPOY in his contract year and was below replacement level otherwise.

You cannot draft a guy in the fisrt round who has indifferent effort in college. Anyone who coasts in college is only going to coast a lot more when they become a millionaire.

If you look at the other times from the defensive line group that are in, what Clowney did is even more impressive. Here are some of the other 40 times from the DL group so far:

Kony Ealy (Missouri) - 4.84

Scott Chrichton (Oregon St.) - 4.78

Kasim Edebali (Boston College) - 4.69

James Gayle (Virginia Tech) - 4.60

Ra'Shede Hageman (Minnesota) - 4.97

DaQuan Jones (Penn State) - 5.28

Cassius Marsh (UCLA) - 4.89

I looked at the NFL's website, and it shows more guys with sub-4.4 times last year than this year.  It only shows three guys with 4.4 times this year (compared to eleven last year).  I could swear I saw more than that in just 30 minutes or so of watching the Combine yesterday, but maybe I was seeing hand times whereas the NFL site shows electronic times.
