OT: Islanders claim Nabokov off waivers
The Wings lost Nabokov today as he was claimed off waivers by, of all teams, the NY Islanders. Would've been nice to see Howie have a proven backup (regular season anyways), but oh well. Jordan Pierce, from the GR Griffins, will the backup as long as Osgood is out with a sports hernia.

Son of a bitch. The Islanders suck.
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:10 PM ^
Ultimate dong-punch.
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:19 PM ^
Jordan Pearce will be going back to GR. Joey Macdonald will be coming back up until Osgood is back.

NYI are the 3rd worst team in the NHL right now, i am sure there would have been at least one other team to claim Nabokov before the Wings were up even if it was just to prevent the Wings from picking him up.

I see that the Rick Dipietro signing has been working out really well for them
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:18 PM ^
Seriously. I'm not sure what is going on in that organization. Draft Luongo, trade Luongo (we'll just draft another hot goaltender), draft DiPietro #1 overall, wait a few years, oh wait he sucks, claim a senior citizen Nabokov off waivers. You know he's not going there to sit on the bench.
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:21 PM ^
I think DiPietro is hurt again. If someone is suppose to call it quits, its definetly DiPietro. The dude is a walking injury.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:11 PM ^
Isn't he signed to a like 75 year contract? Rick DiPietro will last longer with that franchise than Long Island will.
January 22nd, 2011 at 5:45 PM ^
15 year $67.5 million dollar contract according to Wikipedia. I bet that they wish they hadent traded Luongo since DiPietro seems to need his own MASH unit.
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:18 PM ^
Fuck the islanders. fo real.
January 22nd, 2011 at 4:46 PM ^
Wow, is that level of vitriol really warranted?
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:21 PM ^
I was excited about this move but it is what it is. The only thing that i do not understand fully is why did the Islanders trade away Roloson on New Years day then, especially since Roloson has basicially the same career stats as Nabokov. I am sure Holland will make another amazing move in the coming weeks.
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:23 PM ^
The Islanders traded Roloson because they're the Islanders.
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:43 PM ^
Because Roloson cost them more then a million. Nabakov only cost $250,000.
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:25 PM ^
Not surprised to see him claimed. It was a longshot from the beginning.
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:30 PM ^
. . . really make no sense to me. Between nabakov and the 2 guys the blues lost in a similar fashion, there is zero incentive to try to improve your team and bring guys into the league knowing they are likely to get swiped by another club.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:17 PM ^
It's to avoid teams signing guys from other leagues, such as the KHL after their seasons are over, just in time for the playoffs.
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:45 PM ^
Seemed unlikely that he'd get through waivers, but to see the Islanders do it is strange. Ah well, this team will just continue to chug along and win.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:16 PM ^
cant we trade a draft pick for him? or does he have to clear waivers again?
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:03 PM ^
He can't be traded. He would be the Islanders the rest of the year unless he is put back on waivers. Reports are now he will not report to the Islanders.
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:04 PM ^
They can't trade him to another team that put a waiver claim in on him.
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:31 PM ^
That maybe the case. This seems pretty confusing. I've read it both ways now after I read your comment. I'm sure we'll found out soon enough.
Edit: I think he can be traded but he has to be put back on waivers first.
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:30 PM ^
Nabokov says he isn't going to Islanders.
According to announcers on FSN.
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:39 PM ^
Interesting
Could he reject them and stay in whatever league he is in now?
January 22nd, 2011 at 4:13 PM ^
He's not playing anywhere right now. He got out of his contract 20 games into the KHL season due to "family reasons".

So fantastic job all-around by the Islanders, who didn't need a goalie in the first place.
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:57 PM ^
Just reported during the Red Wings game. Nabokov is saying he will refuse to report to the Islanders so they can either suspend him or place him back on waivers.

you should change your signature to something that isn't homophobic.
or your stay on this board will be short-lived.

Duly noted and discarded....your suggestion, assumption and accusation, that is.
January 22nd, 2011 at 4:39 PM ^
"Jim Tressel likes trannies"
Attacking someone's sexual orientation, even if they might be our arch-rival's head coach, is uncalled for and unwelcome on these boards.
It's your funeral. Enjoy Bolivia.

I'll do my part to send him on his way.
January 22nd, 2011 at 5:15 PM ^
Would you both be happy if I changed to "Jim Tressel likes women"? ...or how about "Jim Tressel likes gophers"? ....your use of the word "attacking" is both misguided and, in actuality, the only inflammatory portion of any of this discourse. Walk around A-squared sometime and I will wager you'll never see students who I have observed wearing t-shirts with this exact moniker being slammed to the ground by the city's or campus' finest for perpetration of hate crimes. In the words of the immortal Sgt. Hulka, "Lighten up, Francis."

Nabokov will not report. My favorite bit about that article? Ozzie's quote at the end:
"I haven’t put much thought into it, but the Islanders are terrible so I’m not sure why they did that."
