OT-ish: United Football League

Submitted by Bosch on

I know that there is a moratorium on OT posts, which I am fully supportive of, but I thought this was worth sharing. It is football related and, in fact, the following does include mention of a couple of players relevant to Michigan football history.

Anyway, I ran across this article about Eric Crouch and what he's up to these days.  It sparked my interest a little since Crouch is best remembered by Michigan fans for crying to the media that Nebraska deserved the '97 National Title.  The article itself is pretty ho-hum except, for me, the brief discussion about him being asked to try out for the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League.  There it also mentions that Maurice Clarett is trying out for the Nighthawks.  I faintly remembered someone putting something up about Clarett a week ago but I didn't read it at the time.  I went back and found that post to make sure that person gets due credit. I don't think Clarett had yet tried out when that was shared.  For those of you waiting on the edge of your seat, it looks like he made the cut.

The point of this entry isn't really to discuss Crouch or Clarett, but the UFL.  I remember it being discussed when it was announced that it was going to be launched but I shrugged it off as just another league that barely deserved the Professional label.  But after Ahman Green was mentioned in the article, I wondered what the rosters in general looked like.  As it turns out, there are quite a few ex-NFL players, some of whom have had decent careers.

Some noteworthy players:

  • Ahman Green - Omaha
  • Jeff Garcia - Omaha
  • David Kircus (GVSU, Lions) - Omaha
  • Brooks Bollinger - Florida
  • Dominic Rhodes - Florida
  • Josh McCown - Hartford
  • Marcell Shipp - Las Vegas
  • Daunte Culpepper - Sacremento

Are there any of you out there who paid attention to the UFL that first season?  Is it worth watching?  It would be nice to tune in to some quality football (Versus and HDNet) during the weeknights this Fall.

both teams wore the same uniform design and had a similar color scheme (they might have actually been the same colors). Very difficult to follow.

I saw California play Florida, and then sorta forgot about the league... I did intend on watching the championship game... but forgot, I think they ought to follow the USFL's example and play in the spring... that would at least diminish the off season to a few months

To me, Clarett is no longer a Buckeye ridicule object, but a young man with a chance at redemption.  I hope he finds it.  And, if he does, I hope he deserves it.

They actually have some pretty prominent ex-NFL coaches there.  Denny Green, Jim Fassel, Chris Palmer, and I think Jim Haslett was coaching there last year.

and consider the play fairly sloppy; you'd see nice runs or passes, break ups and the like a few times but mostly it was either unforced errors  (e.g. droped passes, bad throws) or blown assignments. Basically you could really tell these were guys either past their prime or who couldn’t make it in the NFL or probably even the CFL. (One caveat: I'm probably an idiot)

The other things that stood out: garish, ugly uniforms and stadiums with literally a hundred people in the stands.

Hopefully the league improves but I agree with TRSaunders; I hope they move to the spring. That or the rumorded New USFL comes to pass.

I watched a few games last year, and while it's not the best football out there, it's a good distraction. If it were during the spring (as mentioned before) when we don't have NFL or CFB around, I might watch more.
