OT-ish : CBSSports.com [opines] Chizik appears to be out of Auburn's picture [ED: Not a report]

Not that it’s that big of a surprise, Jeremy Fowler with CBSSports.com reports  Two years after BCS title, Chizik appears to be out of Auburn's picture. (link)

Wonder how it impacts Derrick Green’s perceptions after being told recently by the coaching staff We are not going anywhere. He'd look great in Maize and Blue.  Or what will be on Scot Loeffler's agenda after this season?

[Ed-Ace: Just to clarify, this is an opinion piece, not a report. Sure doesn't look good for Chizik, but Fowler is running a long way with a lot of 'no comment's.]

I know you're just trying to be contrarion, but do you really agree with that?  No one is refuting that Chizik was the coach when Auburn won the national championship, but don't you think it's telling that he didn't win much at ISU, was able to take a stacked team with the Heisman trophy winner and win a national title, but once Cam Newton and Gus Malzahn left he's back to not-winning like he was before?

There's no doubting that Cam Newton + Malzahn was a winning combo, but there is no evidence that Chizik is any good without either one of them, let alone both.

I'm not being contrarian.  I just think it's kind of silly to laugh at a guy who left your school and won a national championship, even if he is 2-8.

Would you rather be Iowa State and 5-5?  Or would you rather be 2-8 but have a national championship ring from a couple seasons ago?  Neither one is ideal, but I think I'd rather have the ring, no matter who was the offensive coordinator/quarterback.

Iowa State has an all-time sub-.500 winning percentage and zero national titles.

Iowa St went 5-19 in two years with Chizik.  They've gone 23-24 with Rhoads so far.  It appears both programs have benefited from Chizik leaving Iowa St.  Post WWII, Rhoads has the second highest winning percentage of any coach who's been at Iowa St more than 1 more year (interestingly Earle Bruce has the highest).

One could argue using the logic above that those results are based on Chizik's recruits, not Rhoads's.

From what I can tell living in this state all that the folks from ISU care about is beating Iowa each year, if they make a bowl that's the icing on the cake certainly not an expectation... it's not like they expect to recruit much looking at what schools they are surrounded by to the East/West/South.

And on the living in this state topic... I look forward to kicking the crap out of Iowa this week more than most so I can get all the folks I work with back in their proper place with respect to their postion in the Big 10.

Go Blue... Iowa's for wrestling!

Good point.  Though, as you say, the CYCLONES, are .500 and have been competetive with some good football teams (coming up short in most, obviously).  This is all after a tire-fire of a program Chizik left them as and now Paul Rhoades at the helm.  Chizik will be shown the door soon down in Auburn (opinion article, yes, but I think it'll happen).  In a year or two the 'Clones might and probably will be better off than Chizik as far as football is concerned (yes, he'll have garnered a few million dollars and be sitting nicely, "personally").

What is Chizik supposed to tell recruits?  "I have no idea whether I'm going to be here in two months?"

Chizik is doing exactly what he should.  He is acting as if he still has the job, and conducting himself in a professional way.  That way, when he is fired, it will be harder for Auburn to try and keep any of the money they owe him.

According to CBSsports.com, that would be $7.7 million, with close to another $2.3 million going to his assistants, etc.

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/eye-on-college-football/20...

Coaching has certainly changed in the last twenty or thirty years.  Schools are a lot quicker to fire coaches now.  This is offset by salary increases allowing a coach to make an entire career's worth of money in four or five years at the right school.

Sat with some AU boosters (local business owners in Auburn) at the UGA game who'd heard Charlie as a candidate and said there was probably "too much social resistance" (ie, race card). Petrino won't get hired because the Pres is too involved and might fire AD Jacobs as well. Chizik's firing is openly acknowledged and the locals have kibitzed on candidates for weeks, so these boosters had insider info.

Regardless, they longed for Petrino who could win big with their talent which is "so much bigger snd faster" than Arkansas' because Chizik is a great recruiter. I just responded with a big gulp of Coke laced with Jack Daniels.

I never want to root for a guy to lose his job...unless he's dirty.  The whole Cam Newton thing never sat well with me.  But, I'm still not rooting for him to lose his job.  I would think winning a national championship would give him some leeway.  But, I believe Green said he's interested in Auburn regardless of who the coach is.  I got some news...Green ain't coming to UM and it has nothing to do with Chizik, it's because he's not sold on us.  And, if he isn't sold on UM yet he probably won't ever be....same goes for Treadwell.

I'm not critical of the kids who do things on their timeline, even if it seems (to us) they're jerking us around...they have to do what's best for them, and we shouldn't have any problem with that. Its their process, and we aren't owed anything. Its just always felt like green isn't going to come. Its like a perfect storm for Michigan, based on things we hear. But...it just seems like its not going to happen.

We want guys who are fired up to be at Michigan. Just seems like a great match on paper, but something seems like its missing.

Without going into a lot of statistical detail, this is what Auburn fans see on a broad level. The chart below shows Auburn's rank in the conference for the last few seasons based on rushing, passing and scoring offense and defense. You can see the precipitous drop from 2010 to now rather clearly even at this high level:

SEASON Rushing Off. Rushing Def. Passing Off.  Passing Def. Scoring Off. Scoring Def.
2008 6 8 10 5 10 4
2009 4 10 5 10 3 12
2010 1 1 7 12 1 8
2011 4 11 9 12 7 11
2012* 12 14 13 9 13 11

Certainly, that is quite the fall for someone like Chizik who was being hailed as brilliant just a couple years ago, but as the article notes, without Cam Newton, he is 23-37 in his career.

"Funny isn't it, how naughty dentists always make that one fatal mistake."

One of the reasons for the drop off last year to this year, is the leading rusher, Jonthan Dyer, got kicked off the team. Didn't Zeke Pike get kicked out of school there too? Cam Newton, we all know the story with him. Nick Fairley, character issues that repeatedly surface in the nfl. It seems like Chiziks downfall correlates to some character flaws in players he's brought in. If you bring in kids who have questionable characters and they screw up, it hurts your program and your record.

I think this bodes will for us and Green, it appears more and more every day that this is a match made in heaven.  Miami has freshman phenom Duke Johnson who has been tearing it up (yes, mostly against ACC teams I know) so there's that competition.  However, they do have different running styles.  And I know someone will say this and make reference to USC, so maybe competition isn't always a concern, but with our depth at RB right now... I think Green will be taking a long, hard look at Michigan.  Hopefully Sugar Shane can get in his hear a little.  I'd love to see a Rawls/Green duo sometime in the future!
