OT-ish: 2018 CB Kalon Gervin to Michigan State
Detroit (MI) Cass Tech cornerback Kalon Gervin committed to Michigan State tonight. He's a 4-star, the #20 cornerback, and #194 overall, according to the 247 Composite. I just think it's noteworthy because he's a Cass Tech kid who had a Michigan offer, even though Michigan wasn't really pursuing him. It will be interesting to see how successful he is at MSU over the next few years.

Good get for Dantonio and MSU. Surprised Michigan didn't pursue harder. Oh well, on to the next one.

2018 is a terrible year and the 2019 looks worse.

I would be nonchalant about this if Michigan was pulling in a dynamite class, but we're.. not. A top 200 4-star athlete is not nothing. Kid might be behind a few people but Hill looks like a good candidate to leave after next season given how good he is. We need bodies back there.

We've got 3 committed.. We've lost one to transfer, and everyone else should be back. At this point another CB in the class is a luxury. I'd reserve that for a can't miss prospect, not an undersized kid that is a bad fit for press coverage.
I'm not sure how your opinion of the strength of our class factors into this. Do you want Harbaugh to push kids out of it? Doesn't it seem that he preferred the lower rated CBs in the class over Gervin all along? Do we need to raise the class ranking by taking any top 200 prospects, regardless of fit and need?

This has always been an interesting situation. He seemed to be headed to Michigan just as every major Cass Tech CB in the last few years, and then suddenly Michigan seemed to back off him. I understand he's not as tall as our desired CBs but is there anything else lacking in his game that was a turn off for Michigan?

He's only list as 5'11", haven't we been focusing recently on guys a bit taller?

Kind of...but Lavert Hill and David Long, our two starters, aren't very big. And neither is Ambry Thomas.

MSU, to their credit, is not just going to fade away despite a resurgent Penn State and Michigan to go along with Ohio State in the East.
2018 at MSU is not going to be easy.

Sometimes, kids simply like one team over another. Who knows why? I'd rather have him in our uniform, but good luck to him.

He is one of the guys that was rated high but I wasn't too into them. I didn't think his highlights were that great. Good luck to him, good school for DB's, he'll get a chance to prove me wrong.

You are not a recruit --doubt you ever were one like the vast majority of us -- so of course you wouldn't understand. But it is his decision so why in the heck do care?

Wish him luck. Does seem like Michigan didn't really pursue at the end. Maybe they come back as more spots open up?

Look, if you want to go to MSU then go there. Not everyone is cut out for Michigan. Michigan is hard.
