OT-ish: 2018 CB Kalon Gervin to Michigan State

Submitted by Magnus on

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech cornerback Kalon Gervin committed to Michigan State tonight. He's a 4-star, the #20 cornerback, and #194 overall, according to the 247 Composite. I just think it's noteworthy because he's a Cass Tech kid who had a Michigan offer, even though Michigan wasn't really pursuing him. It will be interesting to see how successful he is at MSU over the next few years.

I would be nonchalant about this if Michigan was pulling in a dynamite class, but we're.. not. A top 200 4-star athlete is not nothing. Kid might be behind a few people but Hill looks like a good candidate to leave after next season given how good he is. We need bodies back there.

We've got 3 committed.. We've lost one to transfer, and everyone else should be back. At this point another CB in the class is a luxury. I'd reserve that for a can't miss prospect, not an undersized kid that is a bad fit for press coverage.

I'm not sure how your opinion of the strength of our class factors into this. Do you want Harbaugh to push kids out of it? Doesn't it seem that he preferred the lower rated CBs in the class over Gervin all along? Do we need to raise the class ranking by taking any top 200 prospects, regardless of fit and need?

This has always been an interesting situation. He seemed to be headed to Michigan just as every major Cass Tech CB in the last few years, and then suddenly Michigan seemed to back off him. I understand he's not as tall as our desired CBs but is there anything else lacking in his game that was a turn off for Michigan?

MSU, to their credit, is not just going to fade away despite a resurgent Penn State and Michigan to go along with Ohio State in the East.

2018 at MSU is not going to be easy.

UM has the excuse of a massive recruiting gap for this year. What was MSU’s for going 3-9 with a veteran team? MSU had a nice bounce back year, but it is clear that they are not what they once were. Two bad weather wins over UM and PSU with UM playing it’s second string QB give MSU a better record than the team warrants talent-wise.

One of the fastest athletes in the state of Michigan. I’m not sure what the disconnect was between him an Michigan, but in couple years we’ll find out if Michigan looks back with regret.

He is one of the guys that was rated high but I wasn't too into them. I didn't think his highlights were that great. Good luck to him, good school for DB's, he'll get a chance to prove me wrong.

I struggle to understand recruits sometimes. Why in the hell would you pick State over Michigan knowing that once all these sex scandles and the Nassir stuff comes full circle. This program won't be allowed to go to a road game let alone Bowl game. Smh
