OT: iPod issues...excuse my ignorance

Submitted by wisecrakker on

So my computer crashes last week and all my music on my ipod is stuck there.

Are there any free simple programs for downloading music from one's ipod back to itunes?

Thanks,

I highly recommend Senuti.  Whn I got my new computer I was faced with the daunting task of transferring my music because for some reason, theres no freakin easy way to do it.  Senuti is free and is pretty efficient and easy to use to get music from your ipod to the computer.

Also Senuti=itunes backwards!! See what they did there???

Dude, see below...

Tons of info out there via a google search.  I found a video on youtube that taught me how to do it.

(only tricky part is what OS you have and how to connect the dots if the instructions are for XP)

Doesn't the new version of iTunes allow you to transfer your music to something like 5 different computers?  You shouldn't need any software to do it other than iTunes.

it only let me transfer the songs I'd purchased through iTunes. I am going to have to look into Senuti, because I just recently had trouble with my computer and the Apple store d.b. erased everything on my hard drive to fix it. I had everything backed up on an external drive, but if I can get all my 8000 songs back with one push o' the button, I'll be a happy person.

  1. Insert your iPod to a Windows PC USB or FireWire port. (PC should runs Windows XP or other Windows operating system).
  2. If your Windows PC still doesn’t have iTunes installed, skip this step. If iTunes is already installed and prompt a message on whether if you’d like to associate this iPod with this computer and deleting its content, click No. Or else you will lose your only copy of library on iTunes. Beside, ensure that ‘Enable Disk Use’ is selected.
  3. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer, the iPod should be automatically detected as a portable hard drive.
  4. Click on the iPod icon or the iPod portable hard drive letter to open the contents of the drive.
  5. If you don’t see a folder called “iPod Control”, it’s hidden and invisible. To unhidden it so that it’s visible, go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View, and then check (enable) the option “Show hidden files and folders.”
  6. Open the “iPod Control” folder, and then the Music folder.
  7. The Music folder contains the iPod’s music and videos, divided into folders. Copy the library to local computer hard drive’s My Music folder.
  8. The files copied have unintelligible four-letter file names. To reveal the names of the songs and other data tags, add the files to the Windows Media Player or iTunes libraries or switch to “Tiles” view in Windows Explorer.
  9. Rename the file if necessary.

My modification of above would to have itunes installed and set not to sync.  Set itunes to consolidate and organize your music library  " Edit, Preferences, Advanced  and click the first two check marks".  Now select all the wierdly named folders on your ipod and drag into itunes.  Itunes will load everything up and all your music will be back on your computer.  After that you can set the ipod back to auto sync if you want.

This method works perfectly, I've done it several times, unless you have an iPod touch. If that is the case then you can use the iPhoneBrowser(free) program to get into your iPod files and follow a similar procedure as above. Just did it last week and everything went great. Only problem is you might have to go through and double check to make sure your album covers are all there.

I think cargo's idea above is the best way to get all of the files back.  I have had this happen twice unfortunately.  If, like me, you have rated every single song on your ipod and have a million playlists you'd like to keep, I don't think the above idea will get those back.  I bought a copy of "CopyTrans" online for $20 and it transfers all of your ratings, play counts, and playlists back and completely repopulates itunes for you in literally one click.  Obviously you have to spend the $20, but they have outstanding customer support and you get all that extra information back too.

EDIT:

One other thing this allows you to take music from your friend's ipods really easily.  Just plug their ipod into your computer and grab what you want. (not that I'm condoning that...)

I had this happen to me.  I like to have my music in a certain file structure and named a certain way (i know...anal).  I used MediaMonkey to pull all my mp3s off my ipod through their "Auto-Organize" function.  This will allow you to set how it names all of the files and gives you much more flexibility than most other programs.

Diskaid baby. Diskaid. I went to YouTube because I'm not that computer savy, and it was a step by step tutorial. I used it for my girlfriend's iPod and it worked great.

I've used Zelek software due to similar issues.  IIRC it was about $35 a couple of years ago to download.  Found it in the back of a Rolling Stone.

I am having an issue with my i-pad. I can draw on it just fine but when I shake it the erase function doesn’t seem to work like my old one.
