OT - For the iPhone Savvy.

Submitted by jb5O4 on
I was wondering if it is possible to connect your iPhone to your computer and use the 3G Network to get an internet connection on a laptop. The 3G network where I live is lightening fast and want to see if I can use it instead of my awful apartment complex internet.

Tethering is not possible on the Iphone. The ONE big disadvantage of the Iphone according to me. Note: This might be possible if you are willing to "Jailbreak" you Iphone. People say this is completely reversible, but apple claims it breaks the warranty , so you choose.

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=iphone+tethering+jailbreak i jailbroke my 1st gen iphone after i upgraded to the 3GS. its a fairly simple process and it is completely reversible. after my friend had his iphone stolen, i sent him the jailbroken one. he got a new SIMM card, and restored the apple firmware on the iphone through itunes. unless you bought the applecare extended warranty, i wouldnt worry about the empty threat of invalidating your warranty.

I think the iPhone does have this capability, but it is disabled in the US b/c of AT&T. I think the feature does work on other networks in other countries with the current version of the phone and software. I could be wrong though.

Has it right, AT&T sucks. They delayed the release of MMS and are delaying the release of tethering. Truth be told, from what I hear they lack the appropriate infrastructure to handle the load.

I always assume the worst of corporations, but I imagine it's because they'd rather have you buy their aircards. Why offer a service for free when you can make your customers pay for a separate piece of hardware and another service plan? [/thinks everyones out to get him]

Tethering is most likely to be released when they switch to 7.2. (fall 2010) Right now 3g tethering would be so slow you might as well get dial up. Get an air card and use your sim card. Apple approached Verizon about having the iPhone first. When apple told them what they were going to have the phone be capable of doing Verizon told them good luck finding a network that can handle the phones need. Apple went to AT&T. So I have to laugh at people that say AT&T is so horrible. Remember, they are the ONLY network in America the can handle the data volume the iPhone users need.

I wonder how long itll be before Google offers free internet for the whole world. Or they could start by launching a giant wireless router into space thats in a geosynchronise orbit above the US. But we all still know Zoltan Mesko will remain the true Space Emperor.

Speaking of iPhones, has anyone had to send away for a battery replacement? I have had mine for almost 2 years and soon I'm going to need a new battery. Or has anyone ever replaced the battery themselves? I've seen it done on YouTube but Im a little nervous to do that myself.

It's possible and on my phone at present, although there was a update recently that may have disabled the hack. Do some search for the ben m tethering hack, and you do not need to fully jailbreak.
