I've actually used this logo several times in a lecture to illustrate the concept of Figure-Ground Ambiguity. The real argument becomes 'what do you see first, the words Big Ten or the number 11?" Would have loved a more in-depth interview, and how he was selected over others to do the mark, etc.
Another classic example of figure/ground effect is the FedEx logo... Amazing how many people have never taken notice of such an obvious and intentional design.
That'll do it for today, class. For homework today II'd like you all to draw Brutus Buckeye suffering a violent death ten times. See you tomorrow.
