OT: Interesting photo of Sheed

Submitted by Dan Man on

So, I was just reading Bill Simmons's latest article on what a cancer Rasheed Wallace has become for the Celtics -

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/100407&sportCat…

- and I noticed an interesting photo of Sheed in the sidebar. Here is the enlarged version: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/gallery/enlargePhoto?id=5063767&story=50…

I don't know why I think it's so funny. Maybe it's my inner twelve-year old...

Back in the day, Roundball One was flying through some awful turbulence, somewhere above Texas. Afterwards, Flip Saunders said, "I've never been so scared in my entire life."

During the worst of it, Sheed was sitting in the back of the plane, throwing his hands up, yelling, "Whoooo!" like he was on a rollercoaster.

Anybody else read that article and kinda slowly nod to yourself because he actually described him perfectly? Especially the part about him never taking the ball down to the block. I liked Sheed for most of his tenure in Detroit, but I was definitely glad when he left.

While at a Pistons Celtics game with my family 'Sheed blocked one of Kevin Garnets attempted shots and then went on to scream "get that shit outta here nigger!!!" I swear the whole stadium must've heard it. Classless idiot.

Funny 'cause it's true. That's the best column he's written in a long time. I remember these frustrations well.

The most frustrating thing about Sheed (besides the fact that he wouldn't post up) was how he'd rack up technicals in the postseason, always drawing perilously close to earning an automatic suspension. There were a couple years in which he used up his whole quota in the first three rounds and avoided suspension only because the Pistons lost in the conference finals.

This had one zinger after another; sadly for Sheed, they were all true. I like this quote about dogging it the best:

"Sometimes I count to see how many consecutive possessions Sheed can pull off without crossing either charity stripe. His unofficial record is nine."

Ouch.

Simmons forgot the part how the Celtics inexplicably facilitated the trade that brought Sheed from Atlanta to Detroit in the first place and then gave us back the one player they got from us in the deal, allowing the Pistons to roll to the championship that year.

What a skewering.
That pretty much describes every nuance of Sheed.

I will take issue with one point though;

"Sheed earned a big-game player reputation despite having a prominent role in the NBA's biggest Game 7 collapse ever (Lakers-Blazers, 2000 Western finals: Sheed went 0-for-6 down the stretch and bricked two huge free throws). He also made one of the biggest NBA brain farts ever (leaving a scorching-hot Robert Horry wide-open during Game 5 of the 2005 Finals, a play that single-handedly swung the title that season).

Sheed is fortunate that nobody seems to remember those two games."

I remember 2005, Game 5 against the Spurs, as I'm sure most Piston fans do.
I also have to believe that Portland fans remember Game 7 in 2000 as well.

Other than that, a perfect blood-letting of the enigma that is Sheed.

I think it was Sunday against the Cavs when he got that technical that he just started yelling at Doc Rivers because Doc was trying to settle down. Was really glad to see him go, I wonder if the Celtics have realized that they made a mistake by bringing him in yet.

liked Sheed. When i started reading the column i was getting annoyed. I was saying to myself how dare this mf writte this stuff about one of my favorite players. But than as i kept reading even i, a fan who wears the jersey of when he was with the pistons started to agree with every single point the writter was making. Sheed is exactly like he described. Could have been great but instead became good.

... I once heard Charles Barkley say that, natural talent-wise, Sheed is one of the top 5 NBA players EVER.

That said, he does bring a certain uplifting air to the somber world of professional sports.

Remember how Sheed had a pro-wrestling title belt made after the 2004 championship? Gotta love it...

I will never hate Sheed. He plays with passion and annoys ALL refs. He was, however, the difference in 04 IMO. While unlikely, Boston isn't dead yet and Sheed is one player. I do agree that he has become quite limited as a player, but I have to believe age has impacted his maneuverability on the inside. He is a more defensive less accurate Sam Perkins.
