OT: Indianapolis Colts hire Ravens DC Chuck Pagano as next HC

According to ESPN, the Colts have hired Ravens Defensive Coordinator Chuck Pagano to be their next head coach.

Pagano spent three years as the Ravens' secondary coach before being named defensive coordinator in January 2011. He also spent two years as defensive backs coach in Oakland (2005-06) and four years with Cleveland (2001-04), in addition to college jobs at Miami and North Carolina among others.

One of Pagano's most important decisions will be regarding Manning's future with the club.

Well, I guess we can stop the speculation about The Vest taking over Indy. I'm not a Colts fan, but good luck to Pagano. He's got his work cut out for him.

Marvin Lewis, Rex Ryan, Mike Nolan, and now Pagano have all gone from coaching the Ravens D to an NFL head coaching gig.  The only coordinator they have had who didn't get that kind of a bump is Greg Mattison whose age probably took him out of the running for that kind of job (and he's making some pretty nice coin here at Michigan).

The only comparable job is being the Patriots offensive coordinator.  Those guys have gotten to be the head coach at Notre Dame, the Denver Broncos, and now Penn State, despite no prior head coaching experience.

Turns out "coaching" Tom Brady and Ray Lewis makes you look smart.

It is spelled HOKEAMANIA.  Our coach is an ass-kicking American citizen, not one of the Beatles, for Christ's sake!

this just looks ridiculous to me.  Honestly, at this point can't the Ravens just keep their DC for a bit?  At least we have seen that A) it doesn't matter much who is running the D and B) anyone would want this job since it's a ticket to a HC gig.  One of these days it will blow up though, probably the year Ray retires.

Ravens fan, I am getting sick of this.  I am supremley happy that Mattison is at Michigan, but c'mon.  This is 5 defensive coordinators getting head coaching gigs in 10 years.  It's getting rediculous.  I just want a stable and progressing defense.  Imagine how good the Ravens defense could be with more than two years (average) under a coach.

If this was college I'd agree with you.  In the pros though you have unlimited time to work the guys and install your system (or get up to the speed on the system Harbaugh is currently running and use that).

I'd much rather see this, than the entire league treating my coaching staff like a bunch of toxic mutants who must be avoided at all costs.  This suggests that the ownership is doing an excellent job at finding talent and hiring.

Stability comes from Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Suggs, etc.

they had to hire somebody who would acquiesce to the crazy QB plans of the ownership. what better way to do that than to hire a guy who's happy to get a HC gig and cares mainly about the defense?

Haha...well so much for the Ravens not backing that truck of money up to Mattison's because they wanted to keep their DB coach so much. But seriously, it does seem like a bit of a stretch, especially if they want to start fresh with a rookie QB.

Austin was very popular...Corwin Brown was not.

And besides the fact that Hoke knows Austin...he's a great recruiter like Mattison. He was on the Florida staff when Mattison left...and when Mattison left the Ravens he got Austin a job with them.

Austin would be an EXCELLENT hire.

If you want to talk about Michigan ties though, Mallory had them and he'd be a candidate as well.

Scot Loeffler would be mentioned if/when Borges ever leaves, and he happens to be a great OC who is now at an SEC school and has Michigan ties.

Mike Hart is consistently mentioned as a replacement to Coach Jackson down the road.

None of these names would get the job because they're "Michigan guys." However, all of them are very good at what they do and happened to have learned a thing or two at this university we all know and love.
