OT(?): Indiana locks up B1G Regular Season Title

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, but Indiana beat Iowa tonight 81-78. They have locked up the (outright) B1G regular season title. Just glad Sparty didn't win it...

With Purdue easily beating Nebraska we're locked in as the 8 seed regardless of what happens on Saturday.

So we'll likely get the lovely task of having to face Indiana again if we win our second round game.

Indiana was a complete disaster when he accepted the job after Kelvin Sampson resigned. They had walk ons starting games. Blaming those first 2-3 years on him is a joke. He's won two outright Big Ten titles in four years. Michigan has done that once since 1986. They've underperformed in the tournament no doubt but let's see how they do this year.

Indiana is playing really, really well.  And they actually went a little cold towards the end of the Iowa game and still did plenty to win.

I'm calling it now. Elite Eight...POSSIBLY Final Four, for Indiana.

As an IU alumnus and a huge IU bball fan, the net cutting pissed me and all my friends off beyond belief. Indiana may not be a top 5 program anymore but certainly we're top 10. Only 2 schools have more national titles than us, we do not cut down nets after a loss and certainly not for just a B10 title. That was more embarrassing than getting bounced because we didn't know how to execute against a 2-3 zone.

Bielfedlt tried to throw away the game with his inbounds.  

He did that several times in 2015 for us.

I still will never forgive him for blowing a wide open pick and roll pass against Wisconsin the the Big Ten tournament.    I believe the game was tied and a WIDDE open basket was there for the taking instead he turned the wrong way and the ball goes out of bounds.  Spike was pissed.

Iowa has lost last 4 and 5 of last 6. I want to feel good about our chances, but I can't help feeling like they are in slump that they awaken from with a vengeance on Saturday.

I wish they would have won this game so that they wouldn't have their backs against the wall when they play us. We will get their best game on Saturday. Maybe the upside is that it is now a meaningless game for them. Even if we win, it's a significantly devalued victory at this point.

I'm not happy for Indiana but I am happy that MSU gets no part of the conference title. Unfortunately, no team in the country (other than Kansas) is playing better than MSU right now and I think they will pound Indiana in the Big Ten tournament just like they pounded them a week ago. I'm not comfortable with how angry Iowa is going to be coming to Crisler. Then again, I'm rarely comfortable watching our team against ANYBODY.

The only time it means anything is when someone who normally wouldn't be dancing wins it. Other than that, it means zero. The Big 10 didn't even start doing them until 98. I don't know why you even pointed out that MSU won it that year. We beat them twice in the regular season and won the Big 10 by 3 games.

People said the same fucking thing about Ohio State not making the playoff or winning a National Title again in football - deemed the greatest thing ever

People thought it was hilarious that an Ohio State player got hurt because he hurt his hand pounding the floor.

But a fan happy a different rival team didn't back into a conference title is deemed pathetic.

First off, one of our B10 championships under Beilein (the one where we went 13-5 and shared it with OSU and MSU), we had Burke as a freshman, Hardaway, Douglas, Morgan, and Novak as our starters. We have absolutely seen and will see more talent than that. Second, since that year, we have 3 fewer B10 losses than MSU and have the same B10 record as OSU, and that includes all the "bleh" years. You're right, I have no idea what they were thinking

3-4 year window with talent he has proven to not be able to land consistently. "Will see more talent than that"? Where are you getting this? 

You probably thought Hoke should be given more time because of the Sugar Bowl year didn't you?

2 eventual draft picks (that were a freshman and a sophomore) and the rest of the team not talented at all (which included Matt Vogrich, walk-on Eso Akunne, and Blake McLimans as main contributors off the bench) is highly likely to be replicated. I'm not saying anyone will match Burke and Hardaway, but we won the B10 with those two as young talent and pretty much nothing else. So your claim that we will never have success because of recruiting is wrong. We didn't have the all-star recruiting class until the next year. Also, since Beilein has been coach here, he has 2 B10 titles, MSU has 3 and OSU has 3. I guess that 1 B10 championship in 9 years is what separates "consistent" from "inconsistent." Great point.

Fire Beilein because he can't make as many final fours as Izzo and Matta! We can bring all those other coaches who have been to multiple final fours and not just one like Beilein has. Like........ Do I like that MSU and OSU have had great success in basketball? No, I would love it if they sucked. But your question is both patronizing and stupid. If you want to be pissed off because one of the best coaches in the country has coached at our rival's school for 20 years and your expectations are that only a better coach is acceptable, go for it. You will be constantly disappointed. Every program in the country looks up to Izzo with regards to final four appearances save bluebloods like Kentucky and Duke and Kansas, so have fun being pissed off we don't have the best team in America ever single year. You're an unintelligent fan if you think it's a good idea to get pissed off in basketball when you don't make it to he final four every year. The team right now has zero seniors (only Caris), starts 3 sophomores and two Juniors, and has most every contributor off the bench a freshman or a sophomore, and we have a chance to get 11 B10 wins this weekend. If we can beat Iowa, we will have the same number of B10 wins as them, and after they beat the shit out of State twice, everyone was calling for their championship run at the end of the season. The jacking off about how good we could be when the current team is young and only getting better is ridiculous. Judging your coach by how he does in a single elimination tournament and comparing to arguably the best torurnament coach in the last 40 years is equally ridiculous.

You could copy and paste your argument for Hoke in 2013...''but the team is young!'' That is not and never will be an excuse. Everyone on here after 2013 said ''Beilein is a better coach than Matta!'' Well...Matta sure accomplished more in 9 years at OSU than Beilein has. I think John Beilein is a good coach and I appreciate what he's done but if you think he's better than middle of the Big Ten and occasionally a great run you're kidding yourself. I kinda think the point of sports is to win championships and not finnish in the middle of the big ten the majority of the time. We already did that with Amaker.

Hoke is nothing like Beilein. Football is nothing like basketball. It is stupid to even bring that up. But I'm not surprised. Most think that basketball success should be similar to football success and it just never has been the case and probably never will. Those same people who think that always want to fire the coach and are always disappointed with the season because it didn't meet their expectations. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. And those people on 2013 were being homers and unreasonable. I think Matta is dirty as shit and one of the reasons he is a step above Beilein. And if you want to completely ignore the history of our basketball program and fire our third winningest coach, go for it. Then we can go out and get that amazing coach who has been to multiple final fours. I'm still waiting to hear who that is
