OT: Incredible Catch in Japanese Baseball
Usually FA gets to these before me but holy cow
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABeezd3EBRc or watch below
Unbelievable
Edit: btw, how funny is it that all the fans sit on their hands or clap politely in their seats when something that sick happens? if that happened at Wrigley, beer would be everywhere, four children would be conceived and a pile of records would be detonated.

Mind blown.
Great catch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reminds me of something not OT:
Amazing.

Now that THAT's out of the way:
I'm not sure if this would go over in the MLB or MiLB. I think if you stand on the yellow "home run" line on the wall, then the ball is assumed to have crossed the home run line. I may be mistaken.
Also, this one may be better:

Can I give 10 FAKES out of 5?
That one was proven fake a while back.
August 4th, 2010 at 10:24 PM ^
but how do you "fake" that? It took place in front of thousands of people.

By video editing. Here: http://www.snopes.com/photos/advertisements/ballgirl.asp

Well I appologize for not having seen that commercial. I thought he meant faked in a "she didn't really catch it like that" kind of a way. Not a "completely artificially produced" way.

Give me a green screen and I'll show you.
August 4th, 2010 at 10:49 PM ^
Yeah, I get it now. Didn't realize what sort of "fake" context we were talking about. The whole "Giving it 10 fakes out of 5" thing threw me off into thinking he meant "misreported" not "professionally produced".

Though I know that you didn't mean you thought it was real, just adding onto observations on how Gatorade could have improved the commercial to look less fake:
-She lands ever-so-softly like she is suspended from a harness. Hard to replicate exactly, I know.
-She lands with legs straight and knees locked, and doesn't even flinch, waver, or absorb the shock from landing a 10 foot grab. Even though it's probably possible to wall-jump that high with practice, it's not possible to land that firmly without even bending the knees. Try jumping from a tree branch and doing that (tip: don't really try it)
just some friendly observation
That player must have been so mad!!!

Great catch, but I think Ichiro made a similar catch a couple years ago in Seattle.

Reminds me of Tanaka's catch in Major League 2.

I simply don't remember a time the Reds had so many Asians on their team.

Am I the only one that is not impressed by catches made in baseball that are on highlight shows in countdowns and such? While some plays are in fact pretty impressive, like the one above, I played baseball and I have watched cricket. The guys make diving catches in cricket *without gloves* all the time - it's so easy its routine. I guess when the only sport on TV in the summer is baseball they have to use what they have.

I'm usually pretty impressed with the acrobatic catches that make the highlight reels. When you consider that the players have to be able to see the ball and judge where it's gonna be, and many times have to run fast, watch where they are going, and keep and eye on the ball. Diving infield plays are always amazing because they have to react so fast.
What doesn't impress me are when 8 out of Sportscenter's Top 10 plays are slam dunks in basketball. Okay, big deal. You can jump a few feet higher than a normal person, wave your arms a little, and then slam it in. It's still only worth two points. And they are pretty much all the same. There are usually much cooler hockey plays--great saves and spectacular goals--that get overlooked because of Lebron's latest stunt. So frustrating to me.

my thoughts exactly
August 5th, 2010 at 12:07 AM ^
I agree with you completely about dunks on SportsCenter, but I feel the same about most diving catches in baseball. What is the difference between jumping a few feet higher than a normal person, waving your hands a little, then slamming it in, and running to spot, diving, and catching a ball with an oversized glove? I think I would be more impressed with the athleticism of NBA players if I sat courtside than if I was given the opportunity to observe a baseball game from a similar place in baseball if we are solely referring to dunks versus diving catches.
While I agree completely on SportsCenter overusing the dunk highlihgts, I completely disagree on how easy it is to make a diving catch. While some could be easier than others, to run at full speed while judging the speed and trajectory of a spinning and curving object, disregarding other players and walls, and then maintaing focus enough to complete the catch before crashing into the ground is not at all easy. For similar reasons, I am not upset to see alley oops in traffic show up on highlights. It is just the breakaway dunks and shaq jumping sraight up and then hanging 350 lbs on the rim to look impressive that seem lame to me.
some of the cricket catches are just unbelievable. I love baseball just as much as the next person here, but you are talking about a ball that is pretty much the same hardness, traveling at similar velocities, but being caught barehanded while in many cases standing closer to the batter. Also, the angles are crazy due to there being no foul territory. This is a random video that showed up for a search on youtube of great cricket catches -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8MogGVS1yo
and tell me those wouldn't count as amazing catches even with a glove on.

I always wondered whether or not doing something like that was legal, but was too afraid I'd get laughed at for asking.
Now I know. In Japan, anyway. Crazy cartoons, fancy electronics, Ninja Warrior, and now this. Since the end of WWII, they're just the gift that keeps on giving.

I like the score box, wish america would do something similar
It does seem less obtrusive when it's on the bottom of the screen.
which appeared to have pointed metal spindles, made it even better. He was clearly avoiding falling forward (and great injury) while catching the ball.
In Japanese, do they call these teams by their English names (e.g., Carp), or do they translate them?

That's some Jackie Chan shit.
