OT: Illinois DE Michael Buchanan Breaks Jaw

Submitted by Blazefire on

Just a quick note here that Illinois DE Michael Buchanan, who will be a senior this year and is expected to be the anchor piece of the Illinis d-line, broke his jaw in a fight. IT is wired shut to heal.

My cousin had to have his jaw surgically broken to correct a breathing problem and had it wired to heal. Despite excellent nutritional science, you'll still lose weight if you can't eat, and lose weight he did. About 40 lbs in the 6 weeks or so he had to be wired shut.

I'm thinking Buchanan isn't going to be at playing weight till October at the earliest, and he'll probably have lost a good deal of strength and stamina too. Bad sign for Tim Beckman's first year?

I broke my jaw last year around this time, and had it wired for 8 weeks. I lost over 25 pounds the first week alone.  He will not be in good shape to play for a while. Good luck to him because having your jaw wired shut was by far the worst experience of my life.

Someone please tell all those Orange County housewives that the quickest way to loose weight is to have your jaw wired shut.

I may actually be able to stomach that show if none of them can talk and look even more ridiculous than they already are.

I had jaw surgery to correct a dental problem 6  years ago. My jaw was actually broken in 4 places. I had, and will always have, 6 screws and a plate inserted my grill to correct the problem.  I was "wired" shut for 8 weeks.  I think it all depends on the particular surgery, but my "wire" job was actually a dozen or so bands that prevented a lot of movement of the jaw.  I was only on pure liquids for about 2 weeks.  After the initial two weeks until the 8 weeks ended there was a lot of mashed potatoes, applesauce, ice cream etc...  It all really depends on the surgery.  However, I couldn't really bit into an apple or similar fruits  until about 6 months later.  Interesting to see what happens.
