"Detroit Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias confirmed Monday that he has stress fractures in both of his shins but said he "absolutely" expects to play at some point this season."

Ugh - missed the original thread.  http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/tigers-iglesias-could-miss-most-2014-season

This really, really, really sucks. He has one of the best gloves in MLB. This kind of puts a damper on their new re-vamped defensive and speed oriented team.

I'm sure they have someone serviceable to fill in and maybe even have a better bat but they won't provide the same flair/excitement that Iglesias provides.

Also, is this something that will be nagging for the rest of his career or is it a one time deal?

I'm surprised that team doctors and otherwise weren't able to realize shin splints can often progress to stress fractures.  If he complained about them last year, and he says he had issues, then they should have shut him down for the offseason until he was pain free.  A bone scan can pick up shin splints and stress fractures so they could have monitored him that way if necessary.  But really, they should have shut him down until his pain resolved or significantly improved.  And now he has stress fractures.  Great.

This sounds really wrong to me for someone this young to end up with stress fractures in BOTH legs due to playing baseball.  Is there likely some sort of chronic bone problem in his legs, or is this some sort of freak thing that he'll just be able to sit out for 3 or 4 months and be fine?

As a note for the OP, although this was posted originally on Saturday, it seems like there is a little more known now about the nature and extent of Iglesias' issues as well as the fact that the thread is long buried in the many threads of MGoBracketology and I don't know how many people get to the 3rd or 4th page of threads before they pull the trigger on their own. No big deal.

On the bright side, I feel like there's at least a little relief knowing exactly what the issue is now.  I don't know much about shin splints but they aren't always from stress factures right?  Now they know it's a matter of healing and rehabbing, whereas before they weren't really sure what the issue was.  And there should be more of a concrete timeline for his return too.
