OT: How many wins in the next three games does Jim Schwartz need to keep his job?

Submitted by rob f on

With all due respect to gobluehtown for his recent diary regarding Brady Hoke and the # of wins needed to keep coaching at Michigan, I obviously borrowed in creating my OP title here.

To be completely serious, though, my point is that, barring 3 wins to finish the season, the Lions are in grave danger of being on the outside looking in come the NFL Playoffs.  There's also no chance of a wildcard spot for Detroit, either---it's absolutely win all 3 or lose all control of their own destiny for the Lions, I believe.

Even if they somehow win out and don't continue being those "same old Lions" that we've cussed out year-after-year seemingly forever, methinks they need to then advance to at least the 2nd round of the playoffs (and probably more) for Schwartz to keep his job.

With the remaining schedule being tonight at home vs. the Ravens, next weekend at home vs. the struggling Giants, and finishing on the road in Minnesota, how many of you have any confidence the Lions (and especially Schwartz) won't screw it all up once again?  Lose tonight, and they're looking up at both the Bears and Packers in the standings.  The Bears have games remaining at Philly and home vs. the Pack; GB hosts the Steelers and finishes at Chicago.

to win a playoff game. Even if he wins this shit division it shouldn't savr his job. A decent coach would already have clinched a playoff spot. He has given away 3 games this season and hasn't won any he shouldn't.

This year is especially hard.  So much talent, but so little results.

I don't get why we cannot have a home field advantage like New Orleans does.  With our weapons, we should be 10-6, 11-5 every year, except for our little issue of defense.

I think we will finish 8-8 and not in the playoffs.

I also think that Schwartz will be gone, but then who will it be?

I would prefer keep him one more year and hire a good defensive coordinator (not Rob Ryan).  We have one of the top 3 D-lines in the NFL, so I would think a good D coordinator can make strides with that as a building block.

Needs to win all 3 games and then either win the playoff game or only lose by one possession. Even if Lions make the playoffs but they get blown out of the water, he and his staff should be gone.

No excuse to be backing into this division with the talent we have and how banged up GB and Chicago have been.

Lovie Smith got fired last year after another ho-hum season... he finished 10-6 (but missed the playoffs).

Difference is, there was a new GM in Chicago and he was waiting for an excuse to fire Lovie, missing the playoffs gave him that excuse (no matter the record).

I think with the Ford family's "loyalty,"  Schwartz is safe if he gets to the playoffs and loses in the first round... even if that means a 9-7, 0-1 season.

But even the Ford family would have to relent to the public pressure if the Lions miss the playoffs.

It's frustrating to me that I think he's doing just BARELY enough to keep his job. This is one of the most underacheiving units in the NFL. There's too much talent on this roster to be barely leading a division in which two teams are without their star quarterbacks and the other is as terrible as the vikings. As someone above said, this division has been giftwrapped this year and the Lions should be running away with it.

To answer the question at hand, I think he keeps it as long as he makes the PLAY-OFFS (/Jim Mora). They'll end up breaking my heart by shitting the bed in the first round but he'll keep his job as long as they get there.

Bringing him back with anything less than one playoff win would be ridiculous. You have to factor in that the team doesn't appear to like him very much and I know Mayhew doesn't either.

The Lions should be looking for reasons to get rid of him, not reasons to keep him.

the Lions under Schwartz reminds of the Pistons under Rick Carlisle. They both have some pieces and had some okay regular seasons but could not get over the hump. Only problem is for the Lions is that there doesn't seem to be a HOF coach open to take over and lead the way to a title like Larry Brown did for the Pistons.

I don't see the corrolary. Carlisle wasn't fired for not getting over the hump. He was fired for being rude to the owner's secretary. Could he have won it with Rasheed? I think he could have.

Schwartz is a guy who was a supremely better coach than the last guy. (Shit, who wasn't?) But he's undisciplined and the team reflects it.

Because it's the Lions, he won't get fired if they make the playoffs.  This is pathetic and unacceptable, but it's the Lions.  The team has been dismal in the very period it was supposed to wrap-up the division title.

I love how everyone thinks Schwartz will be fired.  I'll believe it when I see it.  This is the Lions we're talking about.  They always fire somebody three years too late.

If he finishes the season at .500, I am a happy Detroit Lions fans.  Am I the only one who thinks that Schwartz has done really well there?  Dare I say the Lions are fun to watch?  They seem like they should win every game.  He should not be fired at all.  0-16 is all I can say.  How many coaches did they try before they got Schwartz?  Yes, the Lions underperform--but that is what makes them so fun to watch.  You never know when they are just going to go off and crush the Green Bay Packers or lose horribly to the Eagles.  The fact that they are actually capable of winning under Schwartz, regardless of whether or not they actually are, is an improvement.

They don't win the division he is gone.

if they win tonight, they will beat the G men and pr9obably choke vs the vikings

I think this is Green Bay's divison to lose, they beat Pitt next week and the bears week 17 ( i assume with rodgers back for both ), the lions will have to win out.

The coaching on this team is horrible, the offensive play calling even worse ( yes linehan you suck) and the wide 9 defense does nothing.

Mayhew gets a 1 year makeup still, but he needs to address the bad corners we have and get a solid 2nd wr ( should of traded for josh gordon like i wanted to for a 2nd rounder)

In the end, choking games against Arizona ( linehan and stafford), Pitt( everybody but mega), Tampa ( worst one of all ), Philly ( that ones on everybody but Ross).

Also, they need to figure out why Stafford is an interception machine, and get him a qb coach and work with him ( i dont think the lions have a qb coach)

If the Giants let coughlin go, go get Coughlin.

no coach with a record as bad as schwartz has ever made it to a 6th year with one team.

Schwartz in almost 5 years has never won back to back home games i believe, and is 29-48 overall i believe in 5 years.

Hell i wanted Schwartz gone last season..

  • The Lions don't actually have that much talent.  Beyond Johnson and Suh, who are fantastic, there are very few above-average NFL starters.  Stafford is badly overrated due to his perceived talent, big numbers, arm strength, and draft position.  But his performance is not there - he is inefficient, inconsistent, and his QB rating is less than Cutler's 4 of the last 5 years.  The Bears have more offensive talent, the Packers have more offensive talent, and the secondary personnel has not been addressed for many years.
  • Schwartz started with 0 win team that is now a consistent playoff contender.  People forget how quickly it is to go back to Morheinwig, Marinelli, Mariucci types.
  • Schwartz has had 1 year out of 5 where he did not increase the Lions win total.
  • Barring an 0-3 collapse to end the year, he deserves another season.

Schwartz could lose every game the rest of the season and should still be the coach. It's the NFL. He showed he can win in Detroit. When was the last time a coach showed that? Bobby Ross?

I wish he wouldn't but as long as people are still buying the jerseys and apparel and going to the games, there is no financial incentive for the Lions to make a change.  8-8 is just enough to keep people coming to the games with the hope that "this will be the year."

Do you trust them to make another hire?  They bring in headcase coaches and players, you can change both but the result will be the same.

Does it really matter if they fire him or not?  They are never going to make the Super Bowl regardless of who is the coach.  They should have never fired Fontes.

couldnt happen to less classy individual. seemed like a sharp guy, but not as smart as he thought he was. which is as bad as being dumb sometimes.

doesn't matter - it is clear that they have a TON of talent and are under-achieving.

cut him loose - there are a lot of good coaches out there who would love to take over a team w/ this much talent.
