OT How bad does Silas Redd's Transfer look in hindsight?

USC loses to 6-7 Georgia Tech to finish 7-6. Silas Redd tranfers away from Penn State which turned out to be one of the biggest overachievers this year to USC which has clearly fallen the flattest I've ever seen a Preseason #1 fall.

Yes, USC is neighbored by some occasionally sketchy neighborhoods. And, yes, there have been a small handful of violent crimes in the USC area. At the same time, though, Compton, like Harlem, is a large and mostly benign area that gets grossly broad-brushed -- typically by whites who've never been there -- as a giant gangbanger war-zone.

In fact, USC is a pretty impressive place whose students tend to be smart enough to navigate their way through/around the rougher areas and toward the many safe areas just beyond. Students feel quite safe and comfortable there. In fact, USC attracts more affluent and coddled Angeleno kids than does UCLA, which is located in lily-white Westwood.

If you opted to do a little research before posting you'll see that USC was founded way back in the late 1800's. The area wasn't a hell hole then. It became a problem much later on and at that point the Univerisyt was already rooted in the area. The school thrives in a not so great part of town, a part that has culturally changed with immigration etc. And guess what?  Many kids would give their left nut and right breast to go there. And let's not be blind to the fact that many of the top college football players and athletes from all sports in the country end up playing at USC even though it's not in the greatest of areas. But then again, look at a lot of prestigious schools in large cites. Many are now located in bad areas which weren't bad areas when the schools were founded.

That said, USC's campus does seem to be in a worse location that you'd expect given the price tag.

I don't take much into ranking undergraduate schools.  I believe anyone can get a good education at any university if they apply themselves. Unfortunately for you, US NEWS ranks USC a few notches ahead of the almight U of M. I only post this because I am guessing that you do care about superficial rankings. And while I know many people like to tout that having a U of M degree is great because of the alumni base, the same goes for SC. The bottom line is that only the ignorant will scoff at a USC degree.

To be fair, Penn State spent the holidays in El State College.  And will continue to do so for the next several years.

i mean yeah in hindsight it was a poor choice but he made what seemed like a pretty logical choice at the time. usc looked primed to at least make the rose bowl, and he clearly wanted a fresh start. there's no way he could have predicted the team would perform this poorly.

This might be terrible, but I'm sort of glad. He's still going to have a pro career and get big $$$, but I hated the way he ditched his teammates, program, and university just to make a big career move. Maybe I'm too much of a dreamer, but I think there's something to be said for making a decision based on your loyalty and what's right, rather than what's going to make you the most cash and notoriety.

It's not about the guilt of the University administrators, but supporting your teammates.  Regardless, it wasn't "the university" that didn't do what was right; it was a select few administrators who encouraged criminal acts to occur, not the thousands of faculty, staff, teammates, students, and alumni of Penn State. Also, not everyone had the talent of a Silas Redd, where they can pick to transfer to any top-notch institution; why not work through one more year with your brothers on the field, trying to salvage something rather than taking the easy way out?

Well, you have a point about leaving his teamates a year early, but why in hell should he feel loyalty to a program and school that had just fired his coaches and was in turmoil with many fans and students acting in ways that would embarass most decent people? Add in that the school and program turned out to not be like the ones he was sold as a recruit. Their season turned out better than anyone expected, but it would not have been a shock if it had been a disastrous sideshow full of distractions. He hardly took the easy way out, transferring to a program where he was gong to have a lot of competition for playing time.

Eating is murder.

Yep, warm weather, a coaching staff renowned for laxity, incredibly hot cheerleaders, a fawning local media environment in one of the biggest markets in the world, and a team ranked #1 in preseason was pretty rough.

How can a team that recruits on the level that USC does finish 7-6?  They recruit on the level of Alabama.  I cannot even imagine Alabama finishing 7-6 under Saban during the rest of his tenure.  Lane Kiffin must have some pictures that USC's athletic director doesn't want to go public.

But nobody expected Penn St to have the year they had. I don't just mean record wise, but when he transferred everything negative was much fresher. Not many expected them to have anywhere close to the year they did with their image. BOB did a great job of changing a culture and a mindset to give them hope and support to this team. It is a great story to talk of the seniors who stayed, but if any one of them would have left It is hard to fault any of them. The situation affected each player current and former differently and I am sure his decision to leave wasn't solely on draft status and winning a title this year.

I am sure that was a factor in going to USC, but there were a lot of moral issues going on. Many guys left so technically you could ask why they did also, but why even bring it up. They do not have disloyalty issues because they left amid the worst scandal in sports history.

This might sound arrogant, and if it is, it is. We’re Michigan.
