I have to wonder if these pro wrestlers of the 80's are paying for having grown up in the early days of steriod abuse.  You have to believe a ton of those wrestling types were using steroids to look the way they did, and it might have been really hard on their bodies in the long run.

Or maybe they just were party animals and the liquor and drugs eventually wear them out.

Whatever it is they seem to have remarkably short life-expectencies.

and maybe drugs and booze.  i hate to say it, but the next ones we're going to hear about are going to be my old bouncing buddies, scottie and robbie rechsteiner.   robbie started on the juice back when we were freshmen and went from wrestling at 191 to superheavy in a flash.   scottie wrestled at 177 and after graduation was absolutely sick with juice and assumedly HGH.   good guys, exceptional wrestlers, but at some point we all have to pay the piper.

It's a lot more than steroids. Wrestlers are treated like circus animals by promoters (or today, just Vince McMahon). New town every night, rarely seeing your family, constant aches and pains - this leads to painkiller abuse and a lot of party drugs used as necessary distractions from the grind. Sorry if this is taken as political but wrestlers really could benefit greatly from a union. Not everyone is lucky enough to have Brock Lesnar's schedule.

It's a sad day for pro wrestling and a shitty summer.  First Dusty, now Roddy Piper: the guys who built the foundation for the current business are dying way too fast.

The mandatory drug testing by the WWE's wellness program has made the business a lot less risky for top level performers.  I hope the next generation of wrestlers start living a lot longer than guys who were popular in the 80's and 90's.

RIP to one of the greatest perfromers who ever laced up the boots.

CM Punk said the wellness program is bullshit and I believe him. I'd also say guys like Roddy and Dusty laid the foundation for the Attitude Era. Foundation of the current state of wrestling? Built by Vince and his corporate overlords.

One of my favorites.  Good Bye to another piece of my childhood.  It is too bad because he was only 61, and it is reminder that I'm getting old.

Such an iconic figure in wresting.  I grew up a huge wrestling fan and I saw a lot of  cool Rowdy moments in wrestiling.  Aside from what he did in the ring, who can forget the blockbuster movie "They Live".   OK, maybe not blockbuster, but seeing Rowdy in a movie was pretty exciting for me.  RIP Rowdy, you'll be missed.

Piper, Hacksaw, Ultimate Warrior and Sperfly Jimmy Snuka were my childhood. Throw in the Junk Yard Dog and we'd have a basketball team of childhood dreams. A dream team, if you will.

One of the first true tough guys i liked when I was a kid and definitely one of my favorites characters in the wrestling world. LL Cool J immortalized him on a track saying some dude lied and said he "slapped Roddy Piper and didn't get a hassle" lol and the movie They Live was chessy but enjoyable.

Opie and Anthony used to keep a running list of when pro wrestlers died, seeing if they could go 100 days without a death. They never did. Not a profession conducive to longevity.

Who earns his daily bread wrestling violent behemoths while wearing an itchy wool kilt "free Scotsman style" in public has my profound respect. "They'll  never take our free-dom!" RIP Rowdy Roddy Piper, your bouts shall be remembered always.

I just noticed The Iron Sheik is 75 years old and still running at 100 mph (via Twitter these days). Ric Flair is 66 (thought he was a bit older). Exceptions to the rule I suppose. RIP Rowdy.

I always liked him, even after wrestling. They Live kicked ass. I remember my ninth grade English teacher showed us that movie in class the last day before Christmas break. He seemed like he was a really good dude.

I used to love Rowdy Roddy Piper when I was a kid. I loved when he said "I came here to do 2 things, chew some bubble gum and kick some ass, and I'm all out of bubble gum" RIP Hot Rod

and didn't know who in hell Rowdy Roddy Piper was before I saw "They Live" and watched him deliver one of the iconic quotes in cinema history:

Piper was jut awesome in his hey day for the WWF! When he kicked the shit out of Jimmy Snuka in Pipers Pip w those coconuts it was pure genius! He was my favorite wrestler along w Macho Man!

Best wrestler to never win the WWF Championship. Macho Man, Warrior, Piper. Those are 3 hall of famers and guys who helped put the WWF over as the top wrestling promotion in the 80s. All of them are sadly gone.

That's sad indeed, especially considering I finally met him at Motor City Comic Con this year - his was one of the longest lines, and so many people in that line like me had grown up watching Piper and everyone else in that era of wrestling. He seemed like a cool dude too, even based on a few minutes of interaction. RIP Hot Rod.
