I designed a jersey for a fictional NHL Expansion Team to enter in a contest at puckdrawn.com
i was just looking for opinions on which logo i should use as the primary and which as the secondary.
Definitely the old school deep sea diving helmet should be the primary, but maybe the yellow ones. The blue on blue doesn't have enough contrast. Hope you win.
To me the lighthouse logo in the alternate colors is the best one. I don't know why but the dive helmet just seems odd to me, but like I said I really can't put a finger on why.
I like the diving helmet as the primary. I think a simple logo for primary with a busier logo for the alternate fits the NHL better. Nice touch with the citadel hill shoulder patches.
These are awesome. I would say the lighthouse, although I think both are pretty cool. Something about the lighthouse being more symmetrical makes it more appealing to me. Great work!
Agreed with the light house as the primary for symmetry reasons. I'm not a huge fan of the helmet, just as it looks funny, especially by itself.
I like the light house as the primary as well. The helmet is the "funkier" idea, so I think that should be the alternate. Maritimers doesn't really roll off the tongue. I'd try for a different nickname with the same logos.
Urbandictionary.com defines maritimer as "A gay guy from Canada who sits in a velvet chair and drinks garbage beer." I don't know how common that is up there, but that can't be good.
Maybe the "Acadians"
There are a lot of folks in Louisiana who might not take too well to a team in Nova Scotia calling itself the Acadians.
i'm pretty sure that most folks in louisiana either don't know or don't care what hockey even is anyhow
Doesn't matter 'cause our Halifax entry is going to beat yours!
Honestly, I like the helmet better. The lighthouse is too ...how do you say ... Haliphallic.
Ours is gonna be the "H.R.M. Jack Tars" or colloquially, the "Halifax Jacks."
References its pre-Bermuda place as the New World capital of the Royal Navy (a "Jack" or "Jack Tar" is a navy sailor -- was not derogatory)
i like it. very clever and unique.
it's hard to come up with original team names that match the region of the team. i never feel like falling back on making another eagles, tigers or bobcats design. at the same time i don't want to just choose something random that doesn't relate the area like Predators...unless there's something i don't know about Nashville.
On the Preds: I took a tour of their stadium once (during the off-season unfortunately, never got to a game while my friends were all living there), and part of it is they give you the history of the name.
What happened is they created the logo first, a sabre-toothed tiger for the intact skeleton that they found when digging the foundation of a downtown building.
With the logo already done, they had a fan vote between Predators, Ice Tigers, Fury and Attack.
Again, pretty weak.
I'm personally not a fan of fans getting to pick their own mascots (that's how you end up as "Spartans" -- natch). What's popular doesn't ever really stick in peoples' minds as deeply as a symbol that you are born into. Like how nobody from the United States really thinks of ourselves as bald eagles. Maybe if Franklin had his way, we would all be better off for memory of the noble wild turkey?*
* Not to be confused with the domestic variety, which if you have a daughter who goes vegetarian, introduce her to a domestic turkey or chicken and she'll soon be all about killing the fuckers.
You and six zero should have a design-off
haha. i'm a big fan of his pensacola ice flyers design, especially considering how awful their real life jerseys are.
the people in management of all those minor league and semi-pro teams need to start perusing puckdrawn more because so many submitted designs are better than their real life jerseys.
Oh and the anaheim ducks, because that franchise is CLEARLY in the dark when it comes to choosing a decent uni.
that being said, i think i need to do some more uni design training before i get served to hard. this is my first design, but i'm going to try to put together another one for either seattle or milwaukee. team name ideas, anybody!?
thanks for the advice everybody. i think i'll go with the tower and i like the "acadians" idea. it does sound better than "maritimers." i hadn't really settled on that name but i just kept it because i thought it matched the diving helmet logo better (which was my initial design). BUT since i'm going with the tower it doesn't matter that i keep that name.
i would suggest getting rid of the piping on the sides.
but the lighthouse logo is pretty sweet.
but only smaller. Like on the shoulder or sleeve. Then if you switch the lighthouse with the helments for the alternate, it would be so shocking/suprising....
Diving helmet seems too cartoonish.
BTW, that's the clocktower at the Citidel in Halifax. Cool names would have been the Scots representing the strong Scottish presence there or the Explosion. Though the second sounds too MLS-ish and in poor taste.
I was going to suggest "Spud-Pickers" instead of Scots, but yeah, I think the Canadian population would prefer to avoid re-inforcing some of the older racist stereotypes of the area.
That's what the population of South Bend is for. Thanks. I now have my new ND nickname
EDIT: Go to Halifax, Nova Scotia and you'll realize my suggested nickname isn't the a racist stereotype. The Canadian polulation must enjoy reinforcing the stereotype since they employ people to dress in Scottish military unis, kilts and all, to run the national historic site and preserve the history of the area. What do you think Nova Scotia means? New Scotland
Solid vector design, and I love the contrasting values of gray to create such a sense of dimensionality. Personally, I'd go with the diving helmet as the primary, just because there's something secondary about it-- the helmet just seems more iconic, more of a brand.
This might sound stupid, but try putting a copyright symbol next to each logo, and see which one looks more legit. It's actually an old designer's trick, and actually some big name professional designers have used this very technique to judge one design over another.
I haven't had much time to put anything together for the contest-- I told Johnny the other day, I might try to knock something out at the 11th hour, but not sure-- maybe something for Hamilton. Either way, good luck and keep up the good work!
I'd go with the gold sweater with the diving helmet as the home jersey. Heck, I think I would buy that thing.
I was thinking the latter myself, but none of them roll off the tongue well. Milwaukee Grinders, Saws Alls, Drills, Nail Guns, Chipping Hammers. The closest thing to working was the Milwaukee Tools. Something tells me a fan base wouldn't go for that.
and call them the Wisconsin Dells or the Wisconsin Dairymen.
I love regional and local name. I grew up a North Stars fan and loved the name. The Wild is a terrible name. Sounds like an indoor soccer name. One of the other names under consideration for the Wild was the Voyageurs, which I loved. It connects to the history of the state with the French explorers who figure prominently in local names like Nicollet, Marquette.
I unfortunately, havent spent enough time in Seattle to have a good grasp of good local concepts for team names. I do like the Mariners (and formerly Pilots name), also don't mind the seahawks, even supersonics as a nod to local boeing is palatable. A
