OT: High School Football Player dies a hero

Submitted by HarbaughToKolesar85 on

A high school player in Tennessee died yesterday. He acted as a human shield to protect 3 girls from the bullets shot at random towards their group. I share this only to ask that we pray for his family and friends and to call attention to a true act of bravery on the kid's part. I have a hard time believing this is random.  People don't do this randomly.

Sadly people have been killing each other since time immemorial and it will never stop.

its what they do.  some perceived slight is all it takes.  i can't tell you the number of murders i prosecuted where the provocation was virtually nothing.   we'd have 5 shootings a weekend just between two rival gangs amongst the hundreds of gangs in our area.    ou shoot us friday night, we get you back.  same deal on saturday night.  clean up shooting on sunday.

comes from socal.   many started out as car clubs, and were mostly hispanic.  they were called 'pachecos' at the time.   indeed, your version of a gang called 'los counts' is a spanish language take-off, and that didn't come because of the influx of hispanic auto-workers from the south.   detroit was a vibrant city without those types problems in the 50's, unlike california, both north and south where by the 50's the gangs were well established.   the most dominant gang in chicago is or was the 'FOLKS', which is an acronym for 'family of latin killers', again a reference to the roots of that gang which were in socal.

rap music and much of what the kids in the '80's and '90's were wearing comes straight out of the california gang culture and prison system, a system that is run on the inside by various gangs.

My sister goes to UT Knoxville, the story around town is that the shooter robbed a gang, that gang in return shot the shooters mother the shooter. In revenge the shooter tried to shoot one of the gang members sister that's when the football player shielded the girls and was shot and killed. Later that gang went back and killed the shooter.

I read an article about this yesterday. Already at 16 he was a recognized mentor to other players and students. Heart goes out to family and friends.

Congratulations to Zaevion Dobson. Lots of people die without ever having done anything great in their lives. It sounds like a senseless killing, but Zaevion went out in a way that people can be proud of.

I am sick of asking for prayers. How about we actually an enact true public policy to combat domestic violence. Every time there is a shooting everyone is asking for prayers, yet nothing gets done. Pathetic.

Agree. Many of my students are afraid of working with the police for several reasons; being a snitch, mentality that cops are racist, their only memories working with the police are negative in custody issues, etc. There is a lot both sides can do to fight gang activity. A training in social work is essential if you are going to work in a high crime area.

how many days and nights have you been in a black and white in the varrio?   how many search warrants have you served or how many homicides scenes have you had to step through the blood carefully so as not to disturb the evidence and to get to a grieving family member or friend of the deceased?   you interviewed lots of witnesses at those scenes, and if so, in what language(s)?

cops can do bad things and be lazy like any other group, but that type of broad brush is inaccurate and unfair to the many who do the job and do it under some tough, tough circumstances.

greatest common characteristic of most gangsters is that they come from a single-parent household.    you going to legislate no children out of wedlock?  good luck with that in today's culture, and not a discussion for this board as it will dive into the double shock rails of politics and religion.  i'm staying out of that one.

How about we actually properly attack low income inequality, provide actual job training for low income individuals, stop the drug to prison train that incarcerates many low income individuals for low level drug offenses, create actual gun control with teath so anyone with a felony cannot receive a gun in less than three days. But yeah let's pray and give Verizon and their CEO more tax breaks.

A single parent household is only one risk factor and by no means a determining one. I have a friend who grew up in an African American single parent household on military bases around the world. His brother just got out of prison this summer, felonious armed robbery. He, my friend, is in a tenure track professor position at a major university here in NYC. I would love to study the relative risks these two men faced leading up to their current situations but unfortunately one such risk is specifically prohibited from analysis under Federal grant or contract, the presence or availability of a firearm. So I'll just think and pray, think and pray, think and pray, ad infinitum.
