OT: Henne leads Jags to comeback win over Browns

Submitted by Mitch Cumstein on

The Jaguars just beat the Browns at Cleveland to make it 3 of the last 4.  Henne had a solid day with 195 yards and 2 TDs (1 int).  He also lead the Jags down the field with a 3:15 drive that ended in the game winning TD pass with 40 seconds left.

I'm happy for Chad Henne and hopefully he can keep the solid play going and earn the starting QB spot for next year.

Watching the Bears and I feel like I am watching Michigan. The level of incompetence is staggering. Really wonder if Gorgeous Al is calling the plays. Also the D can't get a stop. Just a total joke.

Chad Henne is 3-6 as a starter for what I consider one of the worst NFL teams ever assembled. If he had a decent team around him, he could be a functional game manager.

4 weeks ago all the talking heads were saying this was the worst NFL team ever.  Now they don't even have the worst record in the league this year.  I think this is a definite win for Henne in terms of earning a starting spot next season.

I would be extremely surprised if all those guys go in the first round. Boyd is definitely not a first rounder, in my opinion, and I think Mariotta and Manziel are stretches, too. With the way the league is going, I think Bridgewater and Hundley are solid bets, but that might be all.

Including the Patriots, Broncos, Saints, Seahawks, and 49ers (and maybe the Chiefs) only the Broncos and Chiefs have 1st round drafted QBs; neither drafted by the team they are on. If you pass on a franchise QB it's bad, but only one, or two if the League is lucky, of those guys will be great. The rest are going to be bad picks of guys drafted too high because they're QBs.

they pretty much all consists of 1st round QBs. Russell Wilson, Drew Brees and Tom Brady are the exception to the rules.  It is a bigger gamble on drafting a QB after 1st round because if he ends up as an average QB, you're pretty much stuck on a solid to mediocre team with no shot of drafting a franchise QB.  If you're in top 10 and if there's a franchise QB sitting in your lap, you have to take him.  If you pass on him and that QB becomes one of the best QB in the league, you deserve to be a terrible team for years to come.

Weren't taken in the top ten.  And weren't thought of as sure-fire franchise guys.

Since Brady won-

Brady

Brad Johnson (taken in a round that doesn't even exist anymore)

Brady, Brady

Roethlisberger outside the top ten

Manning, Manning #1

Big Ben again

Brees

Rodgers well outside the top ten

Manning #2

Flacco outside the top ten.

Of the 12 Super Bowl winners 3 have been by guys taken in the top ten (one guy twice) and they both went #1 overall. So actually your point says that if you're in the top ten you shouldn't take a QB unless you have the #1 overall pick ,and you're more likely to get a Super Bowl winning QB by taking a guy later in the first round (or even after). And with the later guy you're actually not wed to keeping him because you haven't invested the pick or the money in him that you have with a top pick flop.

they had awesome roster around a solid vet in Schuab. What did they get in return? Zero SB appearance and zero playoff wins. A great QB would put them over the hump.

Also look at Minnesota Vikings a few years ago. Awesome team with average QB. Zero playoff wins.

If you strike out on a QB, you continue to find a franchise QB. Franchise QB >>>>>> Game changer position players.  QB is the most important position and why it's much better to take a gamble on a QB than other positional player because the upside is greater.

Yep. I get to follow the Vikings up close here in Duluth (this year, as a Lions fan, it has been delicious) and there is no question that their QB situation has been an anchor on the entire franchise, one that will probably cost Les Frazier his job. They reached to pick Ponder and it cost them three years of mediocrity. They threw $3 million at Freeman this year, just to take a shot, and the result has been zilch.

They will not do well without a strong quarterback.

Bears deserve to lose.  What kind of idiot of a coach would rely on a field goal kicker to kick a 47 yard field goal to try to win an overtime?  Hopefully the one that has his office in Schembechler Hall learned his lesson.

Phil Simms: "Beautiful block by #88 Junior Hemingway.  Usually when he comes in, you know it's going to be a run play.  He's only had 4 catches this season, but boy this guy can block!"

And now they know he's not just a blocker.  Gorgeous catch!  (And just got a Michigan call-out on the replay.)

Discuss how much we've lost in blocking by losing our senior wide-outs the last couple seasons.

The Jags will almost certainly draft a QB this year but hopefully Chad can play well enough in the last few weeks to have a realistic shot at winning the starting job in training camp

A couple days ago, the Florida Times-Union did a nice piece on Henne that I happened across as I tried to keep myself occupied on Black Friday. I went back and found it - LINK

When asked about his future, as his contract expires at the end of the season, he said:

He added, “I just want to play my best football these last five weeks and just give myself a shot to stay here and have confidence in the coaching staff and the organization.’’

He seems to be building a life for himself down there, so it would be great for him to land the job long-term.

Let's not forget little Tommy Brady. Lead the Patriots to ANOTHER come from behind win.

Damn he is good.

Good for Chad. I like seeing him succeed. Realistically, though, Henne's best chance for a good NFL career going forward is as a backup. Earning the starting job in what is being called "the worst QB situation in the League" is not exactly a ringing endorsement, and Henne has actually had some skill player weapons to work with.

And there's no shame in that. A good backup quarterback is a guy who has starting experience and is good enough to come in for an injured starter and win a game or two to keep a team in playoff contention. If Henne can do that (and, by his quotes, it sounds like he would enjoy the opportunity to be that kind of backup in J'Ville, which is a cinch to draft a new starter) he can build a good financial future, win a couple of football games, and stay in the NFL.

Guys I was at the game. Chad definitely has lost his fastball, so to speak, and while he won and was functional, his passes have almost zero zip to them anymore.
The Jags won cause Brandon Fucking Weedon turned the ball over on three successive possessions and lined up too close to center on a shotgun so the ball went over his head for a safety.
Mrs Kass could play QB against the Browns and would get the win.
