OT: Help Ohio (Toledo)

Submitted by Perd Hapley on
The City of Toledo and surrounding areas have a water warning issued this morning at 3 am. We can't drink, shower, wash hands, or even do laundry. If you are heading south from up in Michigan, please buy some water and drop it off in toledo. Any fire dept will take it or central catholic high school.

but I've been reading that the toxin comes from algae blooms. And algae blooms had been noted on Lake Erie prior to this. Seems like they knew it was a possibility.

No wastewater plant says "We can save money by putting toxins in the water" "Brilliant Johnson. Let's do it"

The toxic substance in the water has a lower boiling point than water (although much higher than ambient). That's tricky. Hope nobody decides to heat it up regardless.

Trust me I am probably more critical of the City of toledo than you Blue-by-u but being happy that Toledo is not part of Michigan because of this problem and implying you are better, is inappropriate in this instance.

My friend studied this at BGSU. Went out took samples and came up with some sort of algorithm which used satellites to track these blooms. (Way over my head). He tried to sell this to the city and/or the EPA and they did not want it. I always thought he was just a crazy tree huger but I was wrong.

When I was out today 8am, you could not find water at kroger, meijer, home dept, anywhere.  Luckly I work at a place that sells cases of water wholesale so I had no problem.  Anyways water is in beer so drink clean beer!

No, but seriously. My sister-in-law just moved to Toledo and we packed up my mother-in-law's van with water and Gatorade and took it down there.

This isn't just a Toledo problem it's Also in southeastern Monroe County. Here in lower Michigan we are going through the same issue.with the water

The late summer Lake Erie algae blooms are trending worse and worse every year (it was especially bad in 2011).  There's a few reasons why: fertilizer run-off, different creatures in the Lake which have an effect on the food chain.

I've read that Toledo/extreme SW Lake Erie are especially susceptible --- the Lake Erie currents aren't as strong there as elsewhere in the Lake to "churn" the water, plus proximity to all the Maumee River run-off.

All the best for thos affected .......

I was at the Meijer in Taylor, MI (nearest me) and saw an abnormal amount of Ohio license plates, which I assumed was tied to this problem. Normally, we're the destination of choice for the folks from Ontario who will often leave with monumental amounts of food and other items.

In any case, there are supposedly - per Kroger and Meijer feeds - veritable convoys of trucks with water being sent to the Toledo / southern Monroe County area to help provide some temporary relief, and there was a story earlier which said the results of the next tests are supposed to be available at around 7:30 PM, if indeed the report is accurate.

Just let the FREE market take care of it... they don't care about profits if it affects your health!

People are so damn dumb. My cousin came down yesterday from near Lansing in Fowlerville and people went all the way up there to get a freaking year's worth of bottled water. Then of course all the shity Ohio drivers were making the drive even better.
