OT: Help bring the X Games to Detroit - Vote on Facebook

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on

As many of you know, ESPN is deciding between Charlotte, Austin, TX, Chicago and Detroit as the host city for the next three X Games. They posted a place where fans can vote on Facebook           https://www.facebook.com/questions/10151478891176964/

By no means will this be the ultimate determining factor but it can't hurt to show the enthusiasm to bring the X Games to Detroit.

Its summer, we're bored, why not?

That'd be pretty awesome for the city if this happened.  Unfortunately, I could not care less about the X Games, so I'll leaving the voting to the people who do care.

They could build a ramp out of abandoned houses and jump over the homeless while unemployed UAW workers judge their form (in between smoke breaks of course). Sounds like a real stimulus to the economy.

Well if you don't like x games do you like Michigan?

How about the thousands of people it would bring into the state and revenue it would generate for our local businesses.

Also, the publicity it could bring to the state?

I will vote, it's only a click of the button.

Finally abandoned buildings can be put to use. Does anyone has the YouTube video the City used to try to get the X games? It's pretty hilarious... Pretty much the only "event ad campaign" I've seen which highlights the city's derelict and crumbling a buildings as the centerpiece.

I wanted to vote for Detroit....I really did.

But I just don't know if the city's ready to host it, and it's only going to help a very small subset of the population...all the venues are slated to be downtown. And in a city where a thriving middle class is all but essential to emerge from insolvency, I just can't throw my support behind an effort that may divert attention from the real challenges the city faces.

It was just sort of an idea he and a friend had, and this is what it's become. Dan Gilbert and a lot of other people and businesses are behind it.

Regardless of your views on Detroit, it's foot traffic, always good, and media exposure, which could give Detroit a unique opportunity to present itself, because despite all the challenges there's still plenty to love about Detroit. It will take a lot of work to move it forward, but stuff like this run by people who have a vested interest in the city can all be part of the process.
