Happy Opening Day, everyone. The Tigers take on the Yankees at 1:05 in New York, and Justin Verlander will be on the mound. So, as the late great Ernie Harwell would say:
EDIT: struggling to embed. Will try in comments.
Huge White Sox fan but more importantly a huge baseball fan, Ernie Harwell was a class act and a great person. He is by far the best announcer in the history of sports, yes sports, not just baseball.
I loved Ernie Harwell, but I'm still partial to Bob Ufer. Nothing beats him.

for a marathon. Our group of runners was all in the basement of a restaraunt, and we had a huge TV down there. The whole place was dead silent for that at bat, and then I don't remember anything else.
Every year that have high expectations they seem to blow, so I was really disappointed to see ESPN think so highly of them.
most have Sox or Twins winning the division. For the Tigers, it depends on Cabrera. I'm sure that he'll have a typical year. If Miggy can drink most of the season and still put up monster numbers, I'm okay with it even though he has a drinking problems.
The big key for the Tigers is the back end of starting rotation. If Porcello can pick up where he left off in 2nd half of the season, the Tigers should be fine. As long as Penny and Coke can eat up innings, I'm fine with it too.
does anyone have a link to a good live stream?
The best thing about being married??? I get to stick it to a Spartan on a regular basis.
MLB Gameday is having a free preview so all the games today are on MLB.com
if you download this program called Stream Torrent, you can watch games all year. My P2P puts up links for games every day, it's just copy and paste into the Stream program.

March in the D! March in the D! April in the D! April in the D!
Screw the White Sox, that prick AJ Pierzynski (sp?) , and that jacktard coach Ozzie Guillen. I can't stand the Tigers losing to them! Go Tigers!
"They will meet a dastardly fate here for that! There isn't a Michigan Man who wouldn't like go out and scalp those Buckeyes right now."
Yeah thank God the MLB is back. The excitement in the streets is palpable. Everyone can't wait for game 1 of 162. Little kids are playing hooky from school and straining to catch a glimpse of their heroes in storefront windows.

Not really, but Go Cubs! I'll sure miss Ronnie on the call this year...
"Over? Did you say, over? Nothing is over until we decide it is!"
In 1903, opening day was April 20. Why is it now March 31? For a warm-weather outdoor sport, April 20 makes much more sense than does March 31.

162 games is way too long and completely unecessary.
Just bring back the day/night double headers. First game is 1:05 and ends at 4 or so. Leave Copa and hit the Cafe for a burger and Pop. Then back at 6:30 for a 7:05 start.
The players union put a stop to DH play.
From the Red Cedar Message Board: "God hates us." Yes He does Lil Bro, yes he does. Everyone hates you.
This is one of the main reasons why I can't get into baseball. I don't understand how hard of a game it can be if you can play two games in one day. There is no way that you will see a double header in professional football, basketball or soccer.

The Ottoman Empire still existed in 1903. Should we still pine for that? Times change and it's okay.

The political structures of 1903 have nothing to do with the end of March typically still being too cold for a warm-weather outdoor game. When I start pining for governments of a bygone era, I'll come back and read your post again.

Well, for one baseball players don't have to wear heavy wool uniforms, there have been significant changes in textiles allowing players to play in colder weather. I routinely work in -20 degree weather outside at my field site in the winter. I would not even want to think about doing that with clothing from the 1900's.
Also, some cold weather teams have these things called domes now that change the game.

it doesn't mean it's a good idea. It's a warm-weather game, regardless of advances in clothing. The season can creep further towards both ends of the calendar, but should it? No.
And yes, I think the NHL and NBA seasons are too long, too.

That the last Cubs World Series win was a full 15 years before the fall of the Ottoman Empire.
Jeebus.
Go Tigers! But if Curtis Granderson gets a few hits, that's cool too.
