OT: Happy Hannukah

Submitted by JeepinBen on

I know that we've got quite a few of us on the blog who will be enjoying Latkes, Dreidels, Sufganiyot, Gelt, and candlelightings tonight, so Happy Hannukah everyone.

This is a holiday that celebrates Miracles (including, in fact a miracle upset!), may we have a miraculous victory come our way on Saturday. I figure there will be a "Thankful" thread at some point tomorrow as well but to those of you who don't celebrate Hannukah, let me wish you and yours a happy early Thanksgiving. Happy Hannukah! Here's hoping that while Borges only has enough football acumen to score on one possession, we can make the gameplan last long enough to score on eight.

I'm dreaming of a White Hanukkah. -Babs

No but seriously, Happy Hanukkah dudes. Hopefully Michigan's fire burns for at least 4 quarters. And OT if necessary. Hopefully it is, because that means we are in the game.

No but seriously, it's not even snowy. Why is Hanukkah during a not snow season?

And Happy Thanksgiving.

to all the members of the tribe celebrating it starting tonight. Is anyone doing anything special for Thanksgivukah tomorrow like sweet potato latkes? Pumpkin kugel?

Tonight is brisket and latkes, tomorrow turkey and all that jazz.

If enough Manischewitz flows, maybe I talk Mrs. Balls into a spirited game of "Hide the afikomen".

Happy Hanukkah

Happy Thansgiving

I hope Salmonella kills me before having to watch the game Saturday with OSU fans

Question for Hanukkah celebrants: It sure has moved up awfully early over the past several years.  Does it cycle backwards at some point and move closer to Christmas again?  What keeps it from eventually ending up in July?

I'm not the tiniest bit Jewish but I've got some friends who are and I've partaken at times in Hanukkah celebrations.  Including the latkes.  Especially the latkes.  My friend's mom makes the best frickin' latkes.

The Jewish holidays follow the Hebrew calendar which is a lunar calendar.  The Gregorian calendar and Hebrew calendar line up every 19 years because 7 times during that period they add an extra month by splitting the month of Adar into Adar 1 & Adar 2.   So the holidays slip backwards then bounce forwards in the Gregorian calendar but every 19 years the holidays fall on the same gregorian date.

I happen to have been born on Yom Kippur so my 19th birthday also fell on Yom Kippur and my 38th birthday will as well.

My birthday fell on Yom Kippur this year for the first time in my life so the 19 year thing isn't exact.  The last time it fell on my birthday was 1899 and the next time won't be until 2089 so I don't think I have anything to worry about.

Next year the Rutgers game is on Yom Kippur.  Jim Delany obviously is not Jewish.

I though Hanukkah was in December? Is this like Easter where it moves around depending on the groundhog seeing its shadow or not?

Yes, like the Jewish holidays, Easter Sunday is determined by the lunar cycle (First sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox).  So it always bounces around but is never before March 20th and always within 28 days of March 20th.  It is also always the same week as Passover making it really convenient for school holidays.

Happy Hanukkah to all of my fellow MGoMOTs. May we get our own little Hanukkah miracle on Saturday.

Also, someone should really explain to Hoke about Hanukkah and donuts; I'm sure he'd appreciate it.

Finally, given that Hanukkah is rarely this early, and The Game has generally not been this late, could this be the first time we'll be lighting the menorah post-game?
