Well, it isn't an official federal holiday, of course - it wasn't even established as an official "day" at all, I believe, until Woodrow Wilson established it by proclamation in the 1910s (it was solidified by Congress during the Truman years). It marks the day in 1777 that the flag was officially adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

John Adams forwarded the motion, which was subesequently passed by the 2nd Continental Congress, to establish the Continental Army.  Thereafter the US Army has celebrated June 14th as the anniversary of its founding.
