OT - Happy Derby Day!

Submitted by JHendo on

For me personally, the run for the roses is the greatest day in sports. Horseracing is not for everyone (and some no doubt question the morality of it all), but it's hard to deny the suspense of the most exciting 2 minutes of all of sports.

Anyways, where are you watching it and who you got? No race in recent memory has been as wide open and the odds certainly are in the bettors' favor with a ton of mid/longshots.  Exotics are gonna pay pretty big pretty much no matter the results.

I'm watching at home with some mojitos (not a fan of juleps) and I've already locked in my bets: Gormley (betting pretty heavy ATB), and boxing some exotics with Gormley, Fast and Accurate, J Boys Echo and Hence.

There are actually 11 races that happen before the main race, a few of them are pretty important.   So at least it's not completely pointless, empty coverage....but it was way too much Tom Hammond than anyone should have to endure (fortunately it's now Tirico).

Yikes. I know a lot of people enjoy it, but it's weeks of building up for a 2 minute event.

CFB Playoff, Super Bowl, First day of March Madness, any college football Saturday.

Not to say the other events/days aren't a shit ton of fun, but for me personally when it comes to a single day of sports, it's the Derby.  I also am a gambling man as well, so that greatly plays a role in the excitement of it all.  170K people don't trek from all over the globe to Louisville of all places to wear stupid hats for nothing.

We're watching as we do things around the house.

I think I might be allergic to Rutledge Wood's jacket. Every time he is on screen, my eyes physically hurt and I begin to feel stuffy, kind of like when I have been working in the yard for a long time, but without the effort this time.

"Greatest Day in Sports?" It's arguably not even the greatest day in the Horse Racing calendar. It's easily eclipsed by The Belmont Stakes, when there is the chance for the Triple Crown and almost always annually by the Breeders Cup.

"Personally." Everyone is welcome to their own opinions. The Breeders Cup is bigger, especially when it comes to bettors who know what they're doing, but lacks the pagentry and mass commercial appeal that draws me in. The Belmont doesn't post anywhere near 20 horses and is usually a very wittled down field, which makes it lose a lot of the excitement and unknown I love from the Derby, though yeah, when there's a triple crown contender, it's extremely intense. My opinions, nothing more.

Let's see your picks.  My offshore betting site doesn't have the option to do exactas, trifectas, shows, places, ect   so just got to go pick some to win straight up.  Here are mine

Bet the #11 horse - Battle of Midway, as my long shot to win at 36-1 now

Bet the #18 horse - Hormley  to win at 19-1 now

Bet the # 8 horse - Hence to win at 14.5 now

...could easily see Irish War Cry winning it of course but didn't bet on him since I can't do exactas or trifectas like at the real track.

How weird is it Bob Baffert isn't there?  That's too bad his horse got hurt.

post time. I'll pick a horse ( and I'm usually wrong) by watching them as they head to the starting gate. That said, Derby Day is a bittersweet day for me. My youngest brother Bill usually went to Kentucky with several friends every year and I was planning to finally join them at the Derby 4 years ago until he suddenly passed away that previous winter. So today at post time, I'll raise a drink in honor of Bill, stand in front of the TV and enjoy the race, and cherish memories of my baby brother. And then I'll try to remember to tune in to The Preakness two weeks later and Belmont in June...

Best day of the year. Watching at Hazel Park. Place is full of old people in blue jeans and motorcycle gangs. Gotta experience Churchill at least once in your life.
