OT - Hammer Coming Down at Kentucky? Calipari Interested in Pelicans Job

Submitted by Moe on

Wouldn't be like him to leave just before violations happen at his school.

John Calipari has made it known to Pelicans officials that he's interested in the team's head-coaching job. (via http://t.co/ayXbvvBxjy)

Edit: That was fast.

Even though Anthony and Tyreke are in NOLA, I have no interest in the Pelicans or any other job. I have a great job and I'm happy at UK.

Lol at Alvin Gentry as the prime backup candidate. How does that guy keep getting jobs? He's mediocre at best.

These pro sports teams are hilarious at how they prefer retread coaches that are proven to be at or below a mediocre level instead of bringing in new blood from the college ranks. Why not a guy like Chris Mack? He'd bite for $4MM.

Why is there so much hate towards Cal? What leads everyone to believe he is cheating at UK? I understand what happened at past schools, where there was no history or great play or reason to believe he could be a contender at a non-traditional school... But why believe he is cheating at UK?

For those that don't know I have spent 6 years covering the NFL and NBA. I am in my first year covering the SEC. I've heard stories about what happened before UK but I have yet to hear even a rumor about anything at UK. The fact is coach Cal has promised to get all these players serious NBA looks and to this point there isn't a single one, even those that washed out once reaching the NBA, that he hasn't kept his promise for.

Again I am asking about Kentucky and Kentucky only... Why so much hate towards him?

The classes he pulls in annually are ridiculous - you mean to tell me that he going to annually out recruit Duke, UNC, AZ, Kansas et al, and something doesn't seem fishy?

UK always has, and always will, wear the black hat in CBB. They've got a checkered past (I'm being nice) and a coach who has left two programs where FF appearances have been vacated. That's not coincidental - that's habitual.

I've lived in Lexington for the past 22 years and believe me, that program is as crooked as they come. Tubby Smith (for whom I have great respect) wouldn't delve into the world of AAU recruiting and his success level tapered off. I believe Tubby was as straight as one can be when you live in that fishbowl.

$$$$, cars - Doron Lamb sent out a tweet that he later pulled down which insinuated that you can pretty have whatever you want at uk.

Maybe I'm too much of a skeptic, but I don't accept the notion that he isn't or doesn't need to run afoul of NCAA rules, no matter how arcane or stupid they might be.

The one question that I can never get answered is this - why, in 2007, was calipari not considered suitable to be a candidate for the job, yet two years later after Gillispie is canned, he's all of a sudden a suitable hire?

Biggest bunch of whores in CBB.

I won't comment on what I don't know but I will tell you that the reason he out recruits all the schools you mentioned is because he goes about it completely differently. No other coach is doing or has done what he is. All of these other coaches are getting guys to come in and be apart of the team and telling them not to worry about the NBA. He is without question the most honest and direct recruiter.

His guys are getting to the league. Period. I know you are thinking about all the lottery guys but it is Daniel Orton, Dakari Johnson, Doron Lamb and even Archie Goodwin who are the guys getting him recruits. Doesn't make sense right? Those aren't the big names but those are the guys that are proving his point. Putting Lamb to the side the others are guys who either listened to him (Johnson lost 50 pounds this past offseaso) or Orton and Goodwin (didn't listen as Orton washed out the league and Goodwin is getting ready to)...  But the common part is he got them all to the league which what guys want. He is keeping his word and he is doing everything that the parents are asking of him.

He tells kids flat out "don't come here if you plan to be here four years." No other coach is saying that. No other coach is recruiting guys saying "don't plan on staying four years". That is what is standing out to players. Other schools are saying we hope you stay for more than one year.

As for the other stuff I won't comment on things I have not seen and have not heard. I can tell you that no other SEC team think Cal is cheating. Not even off the record.

You lost me at the point when you said he is the most direct and honest recruiter.

No surprise none of the other coaches think he's clean. Those other schools need Kentucky to be among the elite - otherwise, they'd suffer in a number of ways.

As for the NBA, for every Wall, Cousins, Davis and Noel, he's got plenty of other guys that flamed out and are either in the D-League or done altogether.

Enjoy covering the ESS EEE CEE - it's simply a culture I'm not ready, willing or able to cozy up to.

That a true point about guys that didn't work out... But that was also the point that I am making. That is one of his biggest selling points. I get guys drafted that aren't NBA players...

Direct and honest and true... What lies do you think he tells and to who? He has had one transfer and that player is having a great college career. Have you heard any player have an issue with him?

By the way, it's just job. It's pretty easy to do when you have no interest in who wins. It was different for the NFL and NBA when I had to hide the fact I wanted the Pistons and Lions to win.
