OT: Guatemala Sinkhole

Have you guys seen the photos?  They are so surreal it looks photoshopped.  I can't wait to hear what the depth is...I guess the last sinkhole there was over 330 feet deep which (I believe) is approximately a 33 story building.  This one looks like it goes directly to the center of the earth.

They aren't shopped. A quick query to Google News produces multiple reports that this is indeed real, caused by flooding from Topical Storm Agatha.

This is really sad for me. I was just in Guatemala a little under a year ago on a mission trip, so to see the country hammered by a tropical storm and a volcano at the same time is really sad, especially if its causing stuff like that sinkhole.

At least a guy I know from Guatemala decided to stay in Ann Arbor this summer. He seems to have picked the right summer not to go home...

The news I believe, and it is indeed sad.  However, I think both pictures look eerily video-gamish, and the lack of other substantiating photos (CNN.com is running the same two) leads me to believe that they are at the very least embellished. With apologies to those who dislike analogy in all of its forms and to those who strew their feelings on the floor so that they may be more eaisly trod upon, the back to back nature of these calamities bears some similarity to 08 and 09.

We're a bit desensitized these days.  A gaping hole in the street with bits of a building showing in the mud at the bottom might not get through to everybody that this is truly catastrophic.  In order for some to be stimulated to shock, horror, or any other elevated sense of emotion, the pit has to be bottomless.  It's similar to a recruit needing to be OMG Shirtless! (or at least OMG Half-shirt!) in order for us to believe he'll be a star D 1 football player.

I'm still skeptical that they're 100% real.  They just strike me as partially computer generated.  Maybe it's the regular roundness of the hole, maybe the way the lighting is on the descending sides - I can't put my finger on it for sure.  I'm sure if it's a hoax, there'll be some sorry folks, and if it isn't I'll feel a little silly.

Other than the reason of "WTF doesn't look real".. take a look at where the gradient completely cuts off at the bottom...it's not a smooth transition but it goes from 7% opacity to 0% instantly, if you can follow that.  However, a wider area opening up would explain why it looks like that.

They don't declare a "state of emergency" there...they declare a "state of calamity." I know that's just a translation thing, but it seems entirely appropriate.

That drops straight down to the water table. That's why it's a black hole at the bottom. It's filled up with water down there.
