OT: Gruden's Pep Talks

Has anyone been catching these clips on ESPN. This might be the best series that ESPN has put together. I find them entertaining and informative. Everyone seemed to enjoy Gruden's contribution to Monday Night Football last season. This is just another thing he does so well. I am surprised that he is still out of coaching. I hope its his decision because any organization would be lucky to have him as their coach.

Here's the latest with C.J. Spiller:

He isn't a head coach anywhere because everyone in the league realizes that he won the Superbowl with Tony Dungy's team. After winning the Superbowl he only won more than 9 games in a season once.

I have often wondered what Gruden would do in college, where he could have some direct control over his roster. Gruden's decline at Tampa Bay was predictable because they gave away too many draft picks to Oakland for him. In college, his roster would be dependent upon his own ability to recruit and he could build his team according to his own vision, and not that of a GM.

Also, in addition to being younger and more impressionable than their NFL counterparts, players only stay four to five years in college, which is enough to ensure that his "message" doesn't get old. Gruden's last few years in Tampa Bay were terrible, but he was able to keep the bottom from falling out until after he left, so he must have some talent.

College may yet prove to be the best place for Gruden, but I have a feeling that his ego may keep him from ever coaching there.

I caught a bit of the one with Tebow. He told Tebow that he was "good for mankind" or "good for humanity." At that point, Gruden was dead to me and I literally couldn't grab the remote fast enough. Its great that Tebow does good stuff and all, but enough of the media worship. I had hoped Chuckie would be better than that.

However, to each his own. This isn't meant to insult you or any fan of SportsCenter. I'm happy you like the segments--overall, it's good that ESPN has viewers so it can afford to outbid Fox for the BCS.

to the "people see so many different things than I do" catagory. I can't get enough of these meetings that Gruden has made with the players. He gets them uncomfortable and really gets in their heads quickly. This guy knows more about football than most of us on this website combined. He is showing these kids things to work on for the rest of their lives, and they will probably think about it for years. I guess you haters would rather watch people who know nothing about football say the same tired things over and over on sportscenter...

I am reminded of sitting in a room watching George Bush in a debate and hearing a friend of mine describe him as intelligent. Some people simply live in a different universe than mine, and that's cool with me. I just don't get it.

I think he kind of berates these kids. The four QBs all looked like they really regretted signing up for the segment.
