OT: Griffins win Calder Cup

Submitted by Randy Marsh on

User Charlestown Chiefs, ask and ye shall receive. The Grand Rapids Griffins won the Calder Cup tonight, beating Syracuse 5-2.

Tomas Tatar, who will more than likely be a Red Wing next year, tallied 2 goals.

Gustav Nyquist added 2 assists and Joakim Andersson had an assist of his own. Nice finish to the season for those guys after getting knocked out with the wings.

On topic, UM's own Luke Glendening had an assist in the win.

Not to shoot you down or anything, but I really don't see him making the Wings' roster. He's a nice player and everything, but the Wings have a huge amount of NHL fwd prospects ahead of Glendening. I hope he proves me wrong!

this is not to be interpreted as any type of evaluation on Glendening. I'll leave that to the guys who specialize in scouting/evaluation, and that's not the part of hockey I like to post on.

Now that this is out of the way, Charlestown Chiefs, you are hereby awarded enough points to start a thread based on a good posting history and two good reccomendations for OP's. Have fun, don't spend them all in one place (they expire in one year).

Glendening, although he wasn't some high-profile guy in college, is an extremly hard worker/ grinder... The Wings have 0 prospects that fit the mold of a checking forward ala Drew Miller / Patrick Eaves... That's where Glendening would fit into a team; 4th line / checking line guy... and I think in a couple of years when we have exhausted all the grit out of Miller, that's where Glendening will get his opportunity. Until then, keep doing work in the AHL!

I really hope Glendening makes it and based on his work rate I won't bet against it, But..

The wings have multiple higher rates prospects that are earmarked for lines 3 and 4.  Just to name a few, Andersson is a #3 center. Callahan and Ferraro are also going to be those type of 2 way back of the lineup guys.  Nice issue to have for the wings.

Tatar will undoubtedly be a full-time Red Wing next year, as he is out of AHL options (meaning he would have to go through waivers to play in the AHL any further.) He's more than ready for it

Two sell outs at van Andel. Would have been nice to get the cup on home ice.

Glad they finished it off, though! This is a good franchise. Nice to see some success, especially with many of the key pieces likely moving up next year.
