Actually, forget Gerg...Davis is a Mack Brown crony who had resisted much-needed house cleaning before, so the most applicable tie to Michigan's staff is Tony Gibson.

I lost respect for Davis and Brown when the Texas staff benched Major Applewhite for the immature and mistake-prone Chris Simms, a move that cost them at least one realistic shot at a national championship.

"If you did, you should have gained that respect back for them when they won a national championship."

Not exactly, even a blind squirrel with top-ten talent finds a nut sometimes. Both guys went on TV and said they didn't really coach VY and just let him do his thing.

Nothing wrong with that since sometimes you don't need to overcoach, but it just confirmed my suspicion that Brown and Davis were more effective coaches the less coaching they actually did - i.e. their default MO should always be to get out of their own way.

The way Major got sold down the river was unbelievable.

Didn't Mack Brown just have a streak (that ended this year) of having 10 straight seasons of 10+ wins?  I'm just not buying the whole "Mack Brown was a blind squirrel who happened to find a nut" theory.

Obviously, you can have your opinion on whether you like the guy or not.  But there's no question that he's just about as solid of a coach as there is in the country.

I've asked all my UT alum friends and it's been a long time since they've actually considered Mack a coach. Most maintain he's been a "football CEO" since VY showed up on campus.  He's an amazing recruiter who never forgets a name and, well, he's a perfect CEO for a football team but when it comes to actually coaching he leaves that up to his coordinators. He even made a comment earlier this season about how he leaves the offense and defense to their respective coordinators and if 1 kid isn't doing his job he'll step in but otherwise he just stays out of it. One on hand that doesn't sound that appealing but on the other hand we have RR (reportedly) making GERG run a defense he doens't know...

This is like selecting Denard Robinson as Big Ten Player of the Year and then not voting for him as the 1st or 2nd team All-Big Ten.

His title is "Head Coach."  Therefore, he's a coach.  I don't care if he sits on an inner tube all day and sips strawberry daiquiris, whatever he does works.  If the best way he can find to win is by letting his OC and DC run their respective sides of the ball, then he's doing the best thing for the program.  The fact is, a lot of college and NFL coaches are essentially CEOs (Rodriguez is heavily involved in the offense, though), but being able to recruit and to make "big picture" decisions are huge parts of the program.

The argument that I've heard from UT fans (and this is more a criticism of Davis than Brown) is that the team is lost if it doesn't have a top-flight, Heisman finalist leading the offense. Basically, if the coaches don't have a best-in-the-nation level QB, they're totally lost. Which suggests they're good at recruiting, but not necessarily good at the rest of it.

I don't follow the Longhorns close enough to know if this is angry fan reactions or a legit criticism, so take it for what it's worth.

Which is exactly why I didn't hear any Texas fans calling for Davis's head when McCoy was tearing the league up on his way to becoming the winningest player in NCAA history. But I would argue that it's a bad coaching strategy to try and recruit well enough that you don't actually have to coach.

By the way, this conversation is reminding me of that Doctor Saturday article about why Tressel struggles in bowl games (i.e., relying too heavily on being on the right side of a sizable talent differential and being unable to adjust to equally talented teams).

I'm not saying Texas hasn't fared well in recent years, they obviously have done A-OK for themselves. Just that it's a similar argument. The teams rely almost exclusively on having a huge talent advantage, but if their talent isn't uber-elite, they don't know what to do. Which suggests they're good at certain aspects of coaching (e.g., recruiting), but bad at others (e.g., in-game adjustments).

I'm not saying that the argument is true for either OSU or UT, just that they're similar arguments.

I'm just passing along what the sentiment around Austin has been. Like I said, I haven't followed the Longhorns close enough to know if the criticism is legit or not.

I have watched them enough, though, to know that a lot of their offensive problems had to do with play calling. (But they're really young, too, so that's obviously a contributing factor outside of Davis's control.)

I received my MBA from Texas, lived in Texas and know many Longhorn fans. I can say that I can never met a Texas fan that has ever mentioned anything positive about Davis. He does not have much ingenuity in his offense and lost the base when he went with Simms over Applewhite who was considered "one of them". Simms was never beloved and never over achieved which put Davis in a poor light by pushing him as the starter. Whether or not we respect Davis is not relevant, the UT base made up their mind years ago.

When I saw Greg and resigns in the same sentence I got all excited and my brain completely ignored the OT/Davis. Oh well...

Texas is the most glaring of example of outrecruiting its opponents that I have ever seen.  Vince Young singlehandedly won them a national championship.  I'm not totally shocked at the struggles they had this year.  I haven't been overly impressed by large aspects of Texas's program for a while now, such as their ability to get a good conventional running game going.  When Colt McCoy was their leading rusher one year, that should have been a huge red flag.  Their overreliance on superb talent finally caught up with them.  I agree with the previous poster who thinks that Mack Brown bungled the Major Applewhite situation.  He bungled it badly.
