OT: Greatest Red Wings memory

Submitted by Steve Lorenz on

In honor of the possibility of another great Red Wing memory tonight, I'm just wondering which game or moment has defined your allegiance to arguably the most successful professional organization in sports over the last twenty years.

Mine is McCarty's goal against Philly in 1997. My grandma was a diehard fan and McCarty was her favorite player. Everytime I watch that video now I have a hard time fighting back tears.

This is probably the only case in hockey history where the ESPN call is way better than the local sports call.

I forgot about that one year vacuum between Dave Strader and Ken Daniels.  I haven't ever heard this guy's voice doing a game since 1997.

One of my earliest memories of Red Wing hockey. I was only 9 years old, but I remember it like it was yesterday.

I particularly like the puddle of Claud Lemieux's blood at about 7:45.

Game Seven against colorado in 2002 is my single favorite game I ever watched. Certainly not the best but watching the wings smoke show the AVs was amazing.

Not a big hockey fan but as Art Regner says, "GO WINGS"!!!!

I have 2.

1. My only game ever at the Olympia and getting the privilege of listening to some buffoon yell at Willy Huber, "Hit'm with your purse Willy", for 3 long periods

2. I was at a game at the Joe when Gretzky scored his 50th goal in the 37th game of the season. Fastest ever to 50, at least that is the way I am remembering it,.

Biggest scumbag in the history of the world. My favorite McCarty memory is when he peaced on TWO different families and thousands of dollars of gambling debt, and yet IDIOT red wing fans still like him. The worst, bar none.

Best memory: 1997 Cup, by far. What a great night. Watching Steve Yzerman hold the cup was awesome.

You know what we all have problems. I am willing to bet you would be hard pressed to find one family in america that has not been touched by drug and alcohol. abuse. McCarty overcame his deamons to become a decent guy. He is perhaps one of the most selfless teammates in wings history.

god damn, I hate holier than thou attitudes like yours

2) March 26, 1997 McCarty v Lemieux, Vernon v Roy nuff said

3) game 7 2nd round vs St Louis in 96 Stevie Y 2OT game winner

Winning Stanley Cups is always sweet, but 97 was the first one I saw, and it had been 42 years since the previous one.  Climbing over the Avs made it sweeter, as well as the long climb up from the days of the Dead Wings.  I've been fortunate to watch Stevie Y since his debut as a young scorer, soon to be a young captain - which he was till he retired, so long that he was simply The Captain - becoming a two-way player, and finally getting to raise the Cup.

Winning another one back-to-back, especially after losing one of our top D.  Konstantinov holding the Cup.

Seeing Yzerman play basically with one knee.  If he got knocked down, he was slow getting up, having to use his stick, but get up he did:  true grit and leadership by example.  And he kept winning faceoffs.

In 2002 opening the playoffs with two losses to the Canucks at home, then winning four straight.  That was also the year we came back from being down 3-2 to the Avs in the WCF, shutting them out 2-0, then 7-0.  And winning a third Cup in six years.

Probert fights.  He had The Captain's back.  Kocur fights, McCarty fights.  The brawls against the Avs.

1.  Winning the '97 Cup.  Nothing will ever equal that first one.  Every Cup has its special moments, but nothing will ever match that first one.  Not only was it the first, but we had to go through Colorado to do it, and then Philly.  We were underdogs in both series, and the regular season had been kind of meh.  I have a framed poster of the Freep front page from the next morning that has been in my office for 13 years with Stevie Y holding up the Cup.

2.  The 2002 7-0 destruction of Colorado.  I never dreamed it would end that way.

3.  The 2008 Cup run.  I don't know why, but I love the hell out of that team.  They may have been the best Red Wings team ever.  They dismantled everyone with machine-like efficiency while Franzen and Zetterberg established themselves as possibly the greatest playoff Red Wings of all time.

I'm not as much of a fan of the 1996 Game 7 goal against St. Louis.  I was dismayed that Detroit needed 7 games to win that series after setting records for wins and points in the regular season.  This came after a totally overmatched Winnipeg team took them to 6.  Those inappropriately hard series were a harbinger of things to come in the conference finals.  If they had beaten Colorado and gone on to win the Cup, I might feel differently about that one.

In no particular order.

-Probert vs. Domi 2 @ MSG w/ Mickey Redmond making the call: " Proberts talking to him right now, they're gonna go! Here we go!! Oh and Proberts got the boxing gloves on tonight...He just DECKED Domi"

-Yzermans last game @ Edmonton : "And tonights #1 Star...Steve Yzerman" Hearing the fans in Edmonton absolutely ROAR while the entire Oilers & Wings teams remained on the bench clacking sticks in recognition of the end of an era.

-Probert vs. Mcsorley on ESPN prime time NHL(around 92 I think). The fight raged between these 2 gladiators for almost 2 full minutes, with each guy barely able to throw punches by the end. Then a friendly headbutt at the end as if to say "respect". I believe this is still one of the highest rated hockey broadcasts of all time.

-Scotty Bowman putting on the skates. He is the greatest coach of all time in any sport.

The best recent memory has to be being at the game for game 6. Our fans are absolutely incredible. The We want the cup chant was amazing. Only thing that was disappointing was not Hearing a mike Modano chant. Considering it could have been his last game playing in the NHL

Had a friend who worked for the Caps/Wizards at the time, and I lived in the DC area.  The morning of Game 4, I got a call from my friend who found two tix @ $100 each.   I was just outta grad school w/ little money to spare...my wife was just starting grad school.   But it was the quickest and best $200 I spent in my life.  Amazing thing to see live, especially when Vlad held the Cup.  I need to dig out my pictures again.   Damn allergies...I think I'm tearing up again.

Don't remember the date, year or even who the Wings played.  Just remember being a 6 or 7 year old kid, going with my dad to old Olympia stadium, probably '77 or '78, back when they were the "Dead" Wings and seeing my first pro game.  I do remember the Wings won 9-7.

1st was the double OT game in which Yzerman scored on a slap shot from the blue line. The reason it was so memorable is my first son was born during the game and I was holding him when Yzerman scored. My wife let me watch it as she was going through labor and I was right next to her, peeking at the game and her.

2nd was the clinching game vs Colorado when Roy was lit up for 6 goals in just over a period and half. My first born son got up every morning and we would find him watching the first period over and over  for about a month. I was delighted to see him delighted.

Thanks for posting this as it brings me back to a great place.

OP, I was actually at that Philly vs Detroit game in 1997. I was 10 years old, but I vividily remember Lidstrom scoring from the point and McCarty pulling a move out of his ass on the defenseman and deking the goalie Hextall. It was an awesome game and the Wings won the cup on home ice. It was their first cup in like 40 years or something.

I still have a photo of the post game celebration in my room that, if you use a magnifying glass, you can see me and my family celebrating in the stands.

For some reason, the night they clinched the first Cup, I thought it would be a good idea to drink G & Ts the whole night. By the beginning of the 3rd period I was so drunk, I crawled in to my bed and prayed for the spinning to stop. My brother came in and got me up at end of the game and said 'you're going to want to see this'. I was awake long enough to see Stevie Y hoist the cup. I remember falling asleep to cheers up and down State St. Thanks again Mike.

After seeing all of these "History will be made" commercials where the Sharks beat the wings, I can't wait for Detroit to clinch the series tonight, so we can see what the NHL comes up with! Go Wings!

He shoots...save Kahiboulin! Rebound, another shot, saved! Another shot, steered aside by Khabiboulin.....this went on for around 50 shots a game, with the wings winning over the whalers with scores like 1-0. That was my first experience with the incredible goalie abilities god grants to red wings opponents, just to make us sweat for it.

That is my number 2, wheelchair and Lord Stanley's cup is bringing tears to my eyes even now, reading about it, which is confusing the hell out of my wife.

My dad putting me in the car one afternoon in the spring of '95 and saying "we're going to go for a ride."  Then about ten minutes down the road pulling out two tickets to game 5 of the Western Conference Finals from his shirt pocket.  Game went 2OT, Slava Kozlov put in the game winner at about midnight to send the Wings to the finals.  Pretty awesome memory with my dad, too.

but Stevie Y is my all-time fav player in any sport.  Seeing him raise the cup was always an awesome thrill.  I also went to the Joe for the celebration where they retired his jersey...the place was PACKED.  Stevie sat up there with his family while all these current and former hockey greats got up and told their stories of his great career.  In the end they raised his #19 to its rightful place beside Gordie.  F#cking awesome night.
