OT- Great PS3 games?

Submitted by NorthSideBlueFan on

I know this has been covered in the past, but time moves fast so I was wondering what the board thinks is a good PS3 rental/buy?

I recently beat COD:MW 2, GOW 3, Bioshock 1 and 2. So I am thinking about Infamous, Fallout 3, Resistance 2 or Little Big Planet as they look like the highest rated games per IGN I haven't played.

Any thoughts on the games above or others that I should look out for?

I found Assassin's Creed to be awesome.  My girlfriend almost broke up with me. It was either playing that too much, or being on MGoBlog too much.  Either way, we made it through.  I just check MGoBlog furiously during the work hours.

I thought AC2 was amazing.  My brother bought and although I didn't have any particular interest in it, I decided to give it a shot.  I started playing it around 6:00 one night and the next time I looked up it was past midnight.  I had to force myself to only play for an hour or two at a time from then on simply because I wanted to stretch out the fun rather than beat the game in a week.

My wife HATES Fallout 3, meaning it was great and I got more than my money's worth out of it. I'm planning on Red Dead Redemption, too, but you can't go wrong with either Uncharted game. They're better and more entertaining than 95% of the movies I've seen in the last couple years.

I just bought MAG and I like it a ton.  Surprisingly, for 256 people in one game the lag is very minimal.  I'm not a big single player guy though, so if that's your thing I can't help ya.

Assassin's Creed 1+2 are amazing.  Actually, I can't remember if AC1 is on the PS3.  But, anyway, they are worth a purchase.

I also loved Infamous, great replay value.

I concur, the twin stealth blade and the mission variation made it a much better game than AC1. Both are visually stunning as well, which I know sounds redundant in the age of BluRay, but these are over the top incredible. Plus there are two missions you can buy online which are supposedly great fun. I haven't played either though.

AC1 gets super repetitive to the point where it becomes boring at times. Also, the voice acting is just shy of terrible in both games. Still, the visuals are beautiful and it's worth playing through if you're curious (haven't heard any lukewarm reviews, they're either really good or really bad).

Personally, I found Uncharted 1 and 2 to be excellent and Infamous is also worth checking out.

If you're looking for PS3 games, then you have to play Uncharted 1 and 2. Bar none, the best games on that system.

Infamous is a good choice, Fallout 3 was great, and Little Big Planet is a fun party type game.

Not a soccer guy but the game play is fantastic and good drinking game.

Drink for every stop in play: corner, free kick, out of bounds, offside, goalie control, ext.

If you liked FIFA you might like the South Africa WC game that recently came out.  The details on the players are better than FIFA and they have tweaked the gameplay a tad for the better.  For example PK's are now much harder than they were on FIFA 10.

Also the CYC (captain your country) mode is really fun.

Fallout 3 is awesome. I got tired of it by now and traded it in, but I was hooked for a while. That's definitely a game to buy since it has so much play time and content. Uncharted 2 is a sweet game. Story is awesome and online is pretty fun. I actually just bought NHL 10 and that is a sweet game. One of the better sports games I've played. Heavy Rain is an awesome game, but it's probably one that you just want to rent. Story isn't that long, and I didn't feel the need to play it more than once.

I second NHL 10. It is one of the best games made. The Be A GM mode is one of the deepest franchise modes I have played in all of sports. It is pretty cool how deep the simulation goes, especially with scouting Europe/USA/Canada/Russia for players and trying to make trades.

I have played the EA sports NHL series all the  way from NHL 97 for the N64. The controls of seperating the player control from the stick control does take a bit of practice. You can come up with some pretty cool dekes with it.

You could try the classic control. It is more automatic than the manual stick control with the right analog.

heavy rain is a really good game. i got it on release week and played it a lot. the only downside to it, IMO, is that you can actually get so caught up in the story that you forget you're playing a game and they small small controller movements that you have to do here and there to make you realize that you're still playing a game. as much as i enjoy it i would suggest a rental when you have a decent amount of time to really try it out before buying it. the replay value to me seems the biggest downside.

very slow for the fist couple of hours, but picks up tremendously after that.  A little short too.  Fifa 10 is incredible.  I am a soccer guy and this game is great.  Uncharted 1 & 2 and AC 1 & 2 are both excellent as well.  Not a hockey guy, but NHL 10 is great.   The Ratchet and Clank series are suprisingly deep and fun, you get to blow a lot of shit up, a crack in time is pretty clever too.  Batman arkham asylum is superb also, just short.

Uncharted 2 is absolutely the best game I have played for any system, and I am mostly a sports guy when it comes to video games. The whole campaign is amazing, and then there is the multiplayer, which is worth the $60 on its own. (it may even be cheaper now.)

God of War 3 is great too, and I have only played the demo of Heavy Rain, but I plan on getting that sometime as well.

As stated above, Red Dead Redemption is going to be a hit.  It comes from Rockstar Games, which is responsible for the GTA series.  The most exciting feature will be multiplayer free-roam in which you can ride around in posse's of up to 8 people.  From the sounds of it, it's a MMO style situation but I could be wrong.  May 18th can't come soon enough.

comes out May 25th, and the demo is supposedly downloadable today featuring Shogun, Evans, Rampage, and Machida. I am looking forward to this one for sure.

Killzone 2 is my favorite ps3 game, one of the best FPS i have ever played. FF 13 and fallout 3 were great as well.

Littlebigplanet is a pretty good game if you want a change of pace from a shooter or sports game, more of an arcade style game but it is very fun, and if you're creative it gets better.

FIFA 10 is pretty good but I just got World Cup and other than all the n00bs playing with Brazil it is a very fun game.

I've heard insane things about Uncharted 2.  I should probably check that out.  It's just supposed to be a really excellent game.

GTA 4 is one of my favorites and I think the best in the series.  Plus there's downloadable content.  I also like Warhawk.  It's a fun multiplayer game similar to Halo.  Orange Box is also pretty good.  I liked Half-Life 2 and though I haven't played much of Portal, people rave about it too.  Otherwise, I haven't played VGs much the past year.  When I have, it's mostly been old school Mega Man titles (PS2 20th anniversery collection) and MM9 and 10.  Fun stuff.

GOW 3 was pretty good as well. I'm playing MLB the show 2010 right now and and FIFA until NCAA and Madden come out. Dante's Inferno was ok and I'm trying to think what other games I have played this year since my girl got me a Gamefly pass for Xmas and I'm blowing through games like there is no tomorrow.

Uncharted 2 is amazing it is like watching/playing a movie. Graphic wise it will blow most of these other games out of the water.

Infamous is a really really good game. You can be either good or bad and each move you make in the game changes some things in the game. I would have to say it is one of my favorite games and has a pretty cool ending as well. I'm a big fan of that game and from what I hear I guess the new Final Fantasy is good (my brother loves that series).

If you like Baseball MLB the show is really well done and they did a pretty good job with the roster updates so you can play as some of the top minor leaguers as well this year.

If I had to rank my list it would be AC2, Uncharted, Infamous and Gears of War as the best I have played this year/ late last year.God of War was really good but I liked the first 2 better based on the story line the 3rd one lost me for a bit at the end.

You should play COD:MW2 online.  I mean.. the single player is good but the online is the real winner.

It's like... single player is crack cocaine, but the multi player is PCP.  I have spent far too many hours online playing that game.

Also, I see some people above have mentioned Oblivion.  While it is enjoyable on the PS3, I highly recommend playing it on the PC instead, as long as your PC has decent RAM and a good graphics card.  The graphics are much better on the PC, and the controls are WAAAAAYYYY better....it's just one of those games that is easier to play with a mouse and keyboard than a controller.

As far as games to recommend, I'd go with Fallout 3, Assassin's Creed 2, and Dragon Age.

if you have even just a slight interest in baseball then MLB The Show '10 is a must play. The road to the show, create a player, is the best out there. the realism and crispness of the game play and video is unmatched. it's basically a legal form of crack.
