OT: Going to the game tomorrow

Submitted by TheDirtyD on
I'm headed to Columbus to watch the game tomorrow. I've never been to a basketball game at Ohio so I had a few questions? Best places to park if this is even as issue? What's it like wearing Michigan stuff at a basketball game in Columbus? Any other thoughts? Only reason I post this is it seems like everyone has horror stories of traveling there for any sporting event.

because it's nearing 11:00 on a Saturday night, but you're right that it's against board rules, and I took it down as soon as someone said they wanted it down.

I replaced it with a Kate Upton gif from the Hello: Dan Samuelson post. She's just as pretty in this one (and only a little bit more clothed if that's your thing, which apparently it was).

I totally just got negged for suggesting that MGoBlog wasn't the place for actual nudity. Someone is hard up, man.

This is the internet. Trust me when I tell you all that extensive video footage of Kate Upton in a wet t-shirt, MUCH more revealing even than that gif, is not hard to fine. The Googles, they wll assist.

so you're back in the clear for now. Like I said, you're right that this isn't the place, and I probably made a bad moderating decision to put you in a situation to need to say something. Mea culpa, Blazefire.

Though you know I don'te care. No thanks are necessary. This is MGoBlog, where everything is made up and the MGoPoints don't matter.

Tonight, we're gonna start with a little game called one-word-song. And remember, the winner gets to do a little something special with me at the end of the blog. If you know what I mean.

My pass has been intercepted and run entirely the other way for 6 points! Congratulations on your tremendous victory, good sir. I'm going to need more alcohol for the special thing you won. Uh... unless you are in fact the Michigan girl from Tempe 12. Then no drinks will be needed.

but from the stories I've heard over the years, bring a neutral colored jacket to wear out of the building. Being just a guy in jeans and a non-maize or blue with a block M jacket has to be better than wearing one that's decked out in the nice colors around Columbus.

Coming from the north, come down SR315, get off at Ackerman Road, go left, there is a huge parking lot immediately on your right.  Just a short walk south of that lot and you are at the Schottenstein Center.  It is an enormous lot, its where they put most of the RVs for the football games.

As far as UM attire...I stroll around campus year 'round always wearing my UM gear and other than an occasional comment, I would not expect too many problems.  Its the idiots at the football games that come to campus just to start crap that are the problems....they typically dont come all the way out to the Schottenstein Center.  There arent any bars too close to it.

these days it's not nearly as bad as it was in the early 2000s, probably due to the fact that we've gone 2-10 in football against them over the past 12 years whereas in the 90s we routinely ruined their perfect seasons. I went to the football game this year completely decked out in maize and blue and the worst I got was when some guy ran up to my face and yelled "booooo!" I was prepared for the worst, but other than that one incident, I attracted no attention whatsoever. Huge contrast with games from the early 2000s where it was impossible to walk two steps without being confronted by some unruly drunk idiot.

Word is, this basketball game is definitely a HUGE deal there, but there's just no possible way it would surpass a football game, so I highly doubt you'll have any trouble whatsoever even if wear Michigan gear. I, for one, look forward to the days when it'll be impossible to walk in Columbus wearing Maize and blue without getting harassed again.

I applaud the OP, as I could NEVER step foot in anything buckeye-related, let alone attend a full game there. I hate everything about Ohio and wish nothing but failure for them.

I will be down on campus for the game, although at a bar(Varsity Club), and wearing my Michigan gear.  Most fans seem to believe that Michigan is going to roll so I wouldn't expect too much harrassment.  No worries.

i want to go to the game but dont really have enough money to go. i lost my job and its hard enough to get gas for my car but if i had gas and a ticket and maybe enough money for a sandwich or something i would go in a jiffy. but i digress im going to sit at home and watch on my zenith 16 inch black and white.  the pictures a little fuzzy but if i drink enough i wont really give a damn and i like cheetos anyway.

1:30 game on a Sunday certainly helps your cause. Shouldn't be too many people drunk off their gourds that early on a Sunday. But maybe I am underestimating those folk down south.

Atmosphere

As much as people try to make it out to be hell on earth going to a basketball game is not really that bad. The atmosphere is more controlled versus football games and I've been to  the last 5 games vs. Michigan. Of course we were favored those years but expect the hate meter to be turned up to level10 since you are the last unbeated and we're homedogs. I doubt it will be that bad. Now if you win, that's a different story.

Attire

Feel free to wear your Michigan attire and support your team. The worst that could happen is someone yells at you going to the game or coming back.

Parking

Someone else commented on taking 315 and getting off at Ackerman Rd. When you get off you can either turn right and drive south on Oletangy and park at the Fawcett center (it should still be free) and walk across to the Schott or turn right on Fred Taylor Rd and park by the baseball stadium parking lots and walk there. My recommendation would be to get there at least an hour early and park at the Fawcett center since the drive leaving is a lot easier. If possible, avoid Lane Ave at all cost as traffic will be very busy during the game and after making it hard to get back on the freeway.

I-315: If you're going back on 315 you can ride Olentagy north and get back on there.

I-71: If you're getting back on 71 take Olentangy back up to Ackerman and make a right, left on High then right on Weber and 71 will be there. Don't take Lane to get back on to 71 or it will be a long time before you get on the freeway.

I've attached a map that you may/may not find useful. Enjoy the game, Columbus and the environment. Hopefully you bump into some people more representative of OSU that are willing to welcome you there...

 Good Luck!
