Tonight Surya represents Big Blue in the Jeopardy College Championship. If you read my analysis last time, I expect her to do better today because she seemed to find the necessary clicker rhythm late in DJ last week. She's taking on two Ivy Leaguers, time to show her why Harvard is the Michigan of the East.
OT: Go Surya Sabhapathy!
I knew the reference would get at least one note. My grandpa always referred to us as Big Blue.....maybe that's what they called themselves back in the 40s, I have no idea.
but I couldn't resist.
I don't blame you, it does sound a bit old fashioned if I do say so myself.
I thought you were referring to IBM, but then I remembered they don't hire women.
Go Surya, and way to represent Michigan and MAC (Michigan Academic Competitions).
I do wish that the $100,000 prize had been there 13 years ago, but alas.
Srsly? That's awesome.
You are my new hero! If I can get like 1-2 per category I'm pleased. It's those darned Literature categories that destroy me.
Jeopardy is on at 7 in some parts of the country right?
here in MI.
She's smokin foos
your avatar is smokin foos.
by "That whole Yale thing".
Michigan, Dartmouth and Yale....
Where is little brother?
Surya is kicking ass!
Plus one for the little brother reference. That owns.
I like that Surya is rocking the "Kevin Kline" model of Michigan t-shirt/sweatshirt.
I really dislike the girl from Dartmouth
Yeah, I don't like being a hater, but she is just killing me.
Also, I'm remembering why I don't watch Jeopardy that much anymore, I end up yelling at the television.
She appears to be slightly worse than the status quo for college jeopardy players.
After hearing the Yale girl saying she wanted to be nicknamed "Hillary Clinton", I think I like her a bit less than the girl from Dartmouth.
Can we get an update after Round 1 and another going into Final Jeop?
UM is in the lead.
I think the scores are 5,600 (Big Blue), 1,800 (Yale) and 1,000 (Dartmouth). Looks about right.
would you say that through one round UM is pwning n00bs?
9400 to 4600 going into final jeopardy
The Collegiate Movie Titles category killed me, as there was just too much orthogonal thinking required in too short a time. Blerg.
Screw Alex for putting down Ann Arbor squirrels. California squirrels aren't even good enough to eat Ann Arbor squirrels' crap.
Columbus. Worst place ever.
Columbus is not a Ohio metropolis (I know it is), but good to see that Columbus is never the right answer.
"What is oil!?"
but of course. the famous oilswept plains of texas.
Michigan: Our nerds are more normal than yours, while still being smarter.
Also, she can't lose in Final Jeopardy if she chooses not to wager anything.
Ho Chi Minh City, really, really, really? REALLY? (Sorry, history/International Relations teacher hazard.)
Also, the no hope Final Jeopardy! Always fun!
Suck it, Yale
unless she bets stupid.
We haven't had a NC in Jeopardy! since Craig Barker made his magical run in 1997.
The irony of this is that Blue Bunny is one of the easy questions I whiffed on in 2005 during my Ultimate Tournament of Champions game. I will say it is a delicious thing with which to be taunted by people. James Garfield, however, not so much. Not delicious at all.
Bunny Tracks is a signature flavor from this "colorful" brand that makes folks feel "hoppy"
That's hilarious. I looked up Michigan on the college jeopardy wiki then saw your sig after posting.
I'm sure you know about this, but I just found the J! Archive.
Hope the memories aren't painful.
It's game over. Can't wait until the final. It's Thursday-Friday, right?
There, I said it
1. The Columbus incorrect answer had an immeasurable amount of irony in it.
2. How are you in college and not know who DMB is? I am not a fan but come on.
Because it's no longer 1998 and I am not walking down a hallway in Markley and hearing every track from Crash being played out of any number of different rooms?
I don't know how they all missed on Kings of Leon.. Not like they aren't a huge band right now...
I've got 18,000 points!
and a chubby.
EDIT: Scratch that. This is not the final
These are the non-sports muppets:
Am I wrong in thinking that tonight's Final Jeopardy answer is oh so appropriate for Michigan in 2009-10?
Good job Surya!
This is the biggest win for Michigan in anything since the Duke win last year.
and cried at the same time.
If I had been there I would have rushed the set.
did our student section rush the stage after she won??? ZING!!
This is bigger than Michigan 38, Notre Dame 34? I realize that it didn't end up meaning much, but it sure felt good at the time.
thats what she said?
Can't wait to see how she does on Thursday/Friday.
The key is playing smart and not leaving your time outs on the board at the end of the game. They're not redeemable for points you know!
when do the Finals start?
First competitive event involving us in a while where I don't feel like I have to take a shower afterwards. Congratulations to Surya!
I watched yesterday though, it looks like we're getting a rematch between Washington St Louis and UM?
That kid is such a dork. Surya will take it to him.
One of my biggest bummers when I found out I was going to be on the College Championship was that they would not let me wear my rocking Michigan hockey jersey (1996 National Champions vintage) because it was "shiny". So I rocked a pair of M-Den selections, but did not switch between weeks, because you dance with the horse who brung ya.
(Yes, I realize that last part makes no sense. It sounded good when I said it when I was there, and then it became a thing and a thing.)
My friend Pete represented Michigan in 2007:
I think on the first show he beat the guy from UCLA that ended up winning the whole tournament.
Whenever we hung out in the fall of 2007, people would actually come up to him asking, "Hey, weren't you on Jeopardy!?" (He thinks it's because he wore the hoodie he wore on the show all the time.) In case anyone's wondering, they actually don't let you wear your own hoodie but purchase one for you.
As I posted in the other thread about Surya, I went to high school with her and was involved with her in several academic-type activities. I was a senior at the time, she was a freshman or sophomore, and she was schooling everybody. Incredibly smart, and very, very nice, too. Glad to see she's kicking ass out there.
