OT - Get Ready For UNC vs. Michigan State On An Aircraft Carrier
Hadn't seen this posted before, but since it's at least tangentially related I figured it was worth sharing. I think this takes the whole gimmick game location to the extreme, but hey, I admit that it's a game that I would tune into see that normally I wouldn't.
The pertinent part:
The first college basketball game not held on land appears to be closer to reality.
Asked about the long-rumored idea of Michigan State playing a game on the deck of a docked aircraft carrier, athletic director Mark Hollis told the Lansing State Journal Thursday morning that "an announcement is forthcoming." Hollis confirmed earlier this year that he'd like to face North Carolina and stage the game on Nov. 11, 2011, which is Veteran's Day.

I'm pretty ignorant to this sort of thing, wouldn't the elevation changes from being on the water affect the ball?
November 18th, 2010 at 4:05 PM ^
I'm not sure what you're getting at, exactly, but the elevation of a carrier deck is likely higher than most (if not all) of South Florida.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:06 PM ^
The rising and falling of the sea under the boat.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:09 PM ^
He means the carrier moving up and down due to it being a boat.
The answer is no, those suckers don't move while in harbor.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:10 PM ^
I was remembering the extra challenge the snipers had when "dealing" with those three pirates, but I think now that might have been from a battleship.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:17 PM ^
We don't use battleships any more. It was a destroyer.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:19 PM ^
actually am. My sister served in the Navy, I brought her much shame today. I do know that the big guns aren't used anymore, so I have that going for me.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:19 PM ^
But they were not in harbor, and were in reportedly rough seas. Their actions were duly impressive.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:22 PM ^
Yeah, that's my point. Destroyers pitch like a mother. Especially when high on fuel as they always are in combat zones.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:42 PM ^
Yeah, that whole story still blows my mind. I can't even imagine the perfection involved.
November 19th, 2010 at 7:39 AM ^
This poster hangs up in the Navy office I work in. Makes me smile every day.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:45 PM ^
You sank by Battleship!
November 18th, 2010 at 4:18 PM ^
Ah, sorry. I'm not real smart some times (or more often)...
November 18th, 2010 at 9:01 PM ^
They are ships.
You are correct that there would be little discerning rocking when a carrier is moored in a harbor.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:53 PM ^
That will be pretty sweet
November 18th, 2010 at 4:04 PM ^
So what happens when a guy chases the ball out of bounds and takes one too many steps*? I know those things are floating cities but dang. This could be interesting.
* Obviously this would not happen. Or would it?
November 18th, 2010 at 4:08 PM ^
One can hope.

I helped organise a game of tennis between Federer and Agassi on top of the Burj Al Arab in Dubai. We had many similar concerns but thankfully none of them actually happened
November 18th, 2010 at 5:48 PM ^
I dont follow tennis.....but whoever the guy/girl is that sits by the net and redeems the tennis balls off the courts wasn't there for this match? Does that mean the players themselves had to get rid of the excess tennis balls?
November 19th, 2010 at 2:29 AM ^
Yeah this was only a photoshoot/ publicity event. Wasn't even a full sized court. Obviously the more people on court at that high is more risks. I was actually a ballboy (no homo) for 4 years then became in charge of it. As a 16 year old doing kournikova's match was ... Awesome. Also a lot of the Russian/ eastern European qualifiers were amazingly hot
November 18th, 2010 at 4:59 PM ^
Won't cha Jimmy
November 18th, 2010 at 4:04 PM ^
That would be pretty neat. But I think the carrier should be moving. Then we will see just how good MSU and UNC really are.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:06 PM ^
I will doubly enjoy UNC laying a whooping on MSU for a 3rd straight time.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:09 PM ^
What years were you at Chapel Hill?
November 18th, 2010 at 5:09 PM ^
In 2006.
Umich class of '00
How 'bout you? I live in Apex down here too in case you live in the Raleigh area
November 18th, 2010 at 5:33 PM ^
Awesome! My brother was a PhD grad in 2009 and I was an undergrad in '09. I'm in VA for med school now and he's in Baltimore doing his post-doc, but I get back to the area pretty frequently. Good to see another dual fandom guy on here.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:07 PM ^
No problem with this as long as the carrier is in the middle of WW3.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:12 PM ^
Yeah!! You got an MgoPoint in the positive direction!

Do MSU probations technically let them leave US soil?
November 18th, 2010 at 4:16 PM ^
Aircraft carriers are US soil.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:18 PM ^
Hooray for ruining a joke!
November 18th, 2010 at 4:32 PM ^
u know thats y the football team didnt leave the state for he first 8 weeks... the had to get permission first. lol
November 18th, 2010 at 5:42 PM ^
Punctuation, spellcheck, and grammar are your friends. Don't post without them.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:39 PM ^
Hopefully they have all of the fighters locked up, lots of opportunities for a Sparty planejacking
November 18th, 2010 at 4:13 PM ^
What's the point of playing on a boat while it's docked? If you're going to do it, at least go out to international waters and play the NFL Blitz version of college basketball.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:17 PM ^
MSU = attention whores
November 18th, 2010 at 5:03 PM ^
What's the Big Chill, or the game against Alabama in Dallas? Attention grabbing

It wouldn't surprise me if Jerry Jones's super stadium was also actually a spaceship
November 19th, 2010 at 7:58 AM ^
For $1.3 billion it had better be a spaceship, otherwise the people of Arlington got screwed.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:19 PM ^
As much fun as it'd be to watch a basketball game played on a surface that's moving up and down, the kind of seas it takes to budge a carrier don't really exist outside of hurricanes.
Not that that wouldn't also be fun.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:24 PM ^
You know what I'd like to see? A hockey game in Antarctica. In July when it is constant night 24 hours a day, and -100 or lower, and 100 mile/hr winds. Now that would draw tv ratings.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:22 PM ^
So are we taking a CVN that is in service and throwing down some kind of turf surface on it, some bleachers or would this be on one of the decommed ones sitting around? It would actually be cool if installed it on a decommed carrier (like the Ranger) or some other carrier we want to preserve but are having trouble getting the funding for. It could be an excellent way to fund the vessel as a museum ship. Really cool sporting venue during the football months, museum ship the rest of the year.
Also the first game played on a carrier needs to involve Navy. Ideally ND too so we can watch Navy humiliate ND on both land and the high seas.

I'm intrigued by this idea for this particular game.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:28 PM ^
I'm assuming this is for basketball. Just a hunch.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:29 PM ^
...football game, a basketball game.
November 18th, 2010 at 4:37 PM ^
My bad. Skipped right over that. Too focused on the Wisconsin game I guess. Just thinking "FOOTBALL!"
November 18th, 2010 at 6:25 PM ^
You were not the only one CRex - I thought the same thing at first.
Those diving catches out of the end zone would've been interesting...
