OT: Games of Thrones 6/2/13

Submitted by M-Wolverine on
Only two episodes left in the season. Tonight- "The Winds of Castamere." Wonder if we'll get a cool song for that.

Sure. He was the most honorable one left. That archetype is pretty normal and what i enjoy. Should he win it all? Im fine with no. But to just get rid of everyone, why bother watching? To feed some sadistic need to watch what you enjoy die? Im all set.

LOL Robb more honorable than Daenerys, or Bran, or Jon, or Davos? Ok......

TBH you can't become attached to any character in the series. We do know that in the end someone from the Targaryen line has to survive and someone from the Stark line has to survive... it's the song of ice(stark) and fire(targaryen). Whether that someone is an individual descending from both lines or two separate characters no one really knows... there's candidates for both theories.

This is going to sound bitter but mindset like yours is, in my opinion, why there is so much crap and entertainment and it is all so alike.  Yeah its nice to have stories where the good guys win despite everything realistic pointing against it, but sometimes it doesn't just all end up ok too and because of reactions like this those storylines are not successful and don't get made.  You have to remember this season is only half a book, there is much more time for things to be balanced out and there are still plenty of interesting characters left. You don't care what happens Arya? What plays out north of the wall? Who winds up on the throne? Let alone the fact that tyrion is an awesome character and you still have dany and the dragons. What about the three leeches? one has already come through and there are still two names left.  Three main characters have died in three seasons now, Ned, Catelyn, and Robb, its not even that many when you think about it. In short stop wanting everything to work out happily so that can feel better at the expense of a better story.

Well, that's one way to write.  But if the hero always survives, you know that no matter what hardships he goes through, he's never really in peril, because he's going to triumph.

Ned Stark would have been that hero - he was honorable, a man of his word.  But things aren't black and white in Martin's world, he's not writing a typical heroic fantasy, and when Ned got his head chopped off, you knew it.

This is an extremely childish mentality. GoT isn't meant to be a feel good fantasy where the good guys win and the bad guys lose. From the get go GRRM has made it clear that no character is safe and that there are very few truly good or truly evil characters. Everyone is some shade of grey, you know, like real people. If you want feel-good fantasy with black and white characters, I'd suggest sticking to Harry Potter. Leave the adult themes and plots to the adults.

I will say this. Have there been other occassions where you watch a movie or TV show and say to yourself, "WTF??? Why would anyone do that???" Like when the Bond villain after Bond villain, instead of shooting Bond dead when they have the chance, they go on about this or that and set up some elaborate scheme to kill him only to see if him escape? That REALLY drives me nuts because that is a really cheap way to keep your "hero" alive. Well, GOT does not do that. If someone gets in a really difficult situation, they usually get killed. No ifs and or  buts. You gotta give some props for that.

Good guys don't always win, but wtf they don't ever win in this series. It's just one big shitstorm. I swear i'm done with this series, I have lost all interest. There is no reward or payoff for being interested in any of the personal stories..the writer seems only interested in shock value.

Because this series isn't fantasy.... Where did I say no one should die?  I said there is no payoff and there is none.  The Starks and their armies are gone. The children don't interest me, neither does Danerys. Of course the Lannisters will crush themselves from within because that is all that is left. But I don't care enough to stick around another season for it. GRR is a shock jock and honestly I think the man is sick in the head.

can you say there is no pay-off?  Do you realize how good of an episode of television that was?  Game of Thrones is operating at a higher level than any show has, and possible higher than any movie has in quite some time.  The fact that it "shocked" does not make him a "shock-jock."  You feel the way that you do because he constructed characters that good in the first place.  You feel the way that you do because the show is that good.  It actually makes you feel something.

Clearly you haven't bothered to read the books, or really pay attention to the show, killing characters isn't for shock value its to drive the story foreward, its not like this is the final season.  If ned doesn't die robb never takes his armies south and you don't have any conflict or seasons 2 and 3.  Now the north is leaderless and as they say, winter is coming, that could mean some major ramifications for the entire world depending on what is going on with the whitewalkers.

I knew it was coming.

It shocked me when I read the books...I believe I actually threw the damn book across the room. Later, I realized what a brilliant move it was to set a whole new course of events into motion.

As I mentioned in the post you responded to, I screwed up the title of the episode in the OP, as is pointed out in the first post.  Don't know why I had "winds" on my mind, but whatever. I didn't change it because it would make the first post look off, and he was right.
