OT- Game of Thrones S04E08 @ 9:00 PM: The Mountain and the Viper

Submitted by Eastside Maize on

In this corner we have the 6'8"(?) behemoth who impales people on his sword.  This ruthless man put his own little brothers face to the fire. The one and only Mountain! In this corner we have the 5'11"(?) Dornish warrior and seeker of vengeance. This man loves sex almost as much as he likes killing Lannisters. The one and only Prince Obeyren! Let's get it on!!!!

Do you know why all the world hates a Lannister?

Oberyn Martell, you violated the #1 rule of fights to the death: never assume the fight is finished until you place that person's head on a spike yourself.

Have to say, though, that as soon as Martell started gloating at the end, I knew he was a dead man. I mean, why would this show ever allow justice to be served? Still tough seeing Cersei with that shit-eating grin on her face.

I can't get over Littlefinger's "They die squatting over their chamber pots" line. I started laughing like Muttley when he said that. That's brilliant. Let's see if this is relavant to next week.

I honestly have a hard time viewing them doing season 4 any better thus far, it's lived up to all the hype I had established for it going in and then some.  The Viper v. Mountain fight was excellent to see, you can tell Pedro Pascal (Oberyn) really put in a lot of training to learn to fight.  I honestly hope this is somewhat of a breakout role for him and he pops up in more TV/Movies.

From his recent Reddit AMA:

"First, thank you VERY very much. That's always amazing for me to hear. And the production of Game of Thrones actually put me in some pre-training before I went to Europe to start shooting. I was put intro some classes with a master of Wushu, an acrobatic martial art, and they put me with a master, his name is Master Hu, and he has a studio in Los Angeles where he sort of basically showed me the basics and taught me how to fight with a spear and twist my body around and move in ways I never thought possible. And this was a guy who actually did Shaolin movies with Jet Li very early in Jet Li's career, and fought alongside him as his sidekick, so he was the real deal.

Then once I got to Europe and started shooting, there were really intensive fight rehearsals with me and the stunt team that was headed by C.C. Smiff, and other actors, and we did a lot of fight choreography and rehearsals. The Oberyn style of fighting is inspired by Wushu"

I hope they start deviating from the books more and more. WIth some big exceptions I can take or leave most of whats coming. Tonight is a good example.

I think part of what makes that scene and his death so tragic is how much everyone wants him to live.  I think it makes more of a difference than you apparently, but I can't say more, maybe we should start up a "spoilers allowed" thread for this kind of OT discussion.

I don't think the idea is to have Septon Meribald for Septon Meribald's sake.  At least not for me.  If we don't have Septon Meribald then it's likely they won't answer a particular question about a certain hooded character.  The show can answer the question immediately for the same reason the show couldn't have "Arstan Whitebeard" and I'm hoping they do it.

(I hope this is vague enough not to spoil anything but enough to let book readers pick up what I'm putting down.)

I'm a book reader and knew it was coming, the visualization from the books to show was absolute. It's one thing to see it in your mind how it plays out, it's a whole other animal when you hear the screams of pain when the Mountain is gouging his eyes out and Ellaria is screaming in horror.

Tour de Force. Simply put, 10/10.

But the episode overall was this seasons first mediocre one. The ayra cackle was poorly acted, the Bolton thing (like the books) is hard to get excited about, the outing of jorah and his conversation with khaleesi was not intense enough and the moles town thing was meh and the Orson Lannister riff was lame (even Dinklage couldn't pull that off). to me at least. That said, at this part of each season I tend to expect too much anyway so even a bad episode is still a good one in my mind. While eye popping, just thought the first 40 minutes were kind of plodding.

Wow.  I can't believe you said all of these things.

Especially the Orson Lannister thing - it was freaking hilarious and amazingly acted by Dinklage (for this third week in a row of amazing performances in the dungeon - aka the Anti-Ned Stark).

Kinda saw the ending coming, although was pretty pissed. Oberon was kinda weird but I liked him. But I still think the Hound gets his revenge on his bro.

During his whole, 'you raped my sister' speech, I kept hearing Inigo Montoya, "now prepare to die." That detracted from the scene for me, but when his head got popped like Phil Leotardo's, I was like, DAMN! that's some good television.

But Tyrion, we learn, wasn’t satisfied. Though he was born to a powerful family, he couldn’t help but empathize with the littler creatures. And so his interest in his cousin morphed from mockery to curiosity to something bordering on obsession. What was the reason for this constant extermination? It was inconceivable to Tyrion that butchery on Orson’s scale could simply be the way of the world. A life was a life, whether it was protected by a suit of armor or a carapace. Surely, it deserved better. If that wasn’t possible, then at least it deserved an explanation. What, after all, was the point?

The bells rang out and the drama resumed before Tyrion could get his answer. But I think Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss got their meaning across just the same. Life in Westeros is brutish and short. (Littlefinger’s fatherly exhortation that “everybody dies sooner or later” was actually one of the more cheerful moments in the entire episode.) No matter what you do, bugs are going to get smashed. It’ll happen if you ascribe motive or, like Jaime, refuse to give a dusty fuck. It’ll happen if you try to intervene in empathy or walk away in disgust. It’ll happen if you call it justice or scream bloody murder. Orson is above it all. The garden belongs to him. Kung. Kung. Kung.

Andy Greenwald's recap, as always, is great.  I'm on board with his interpretation.

I just rewatched the show and I think, and I have been trending this way for a while, that the show has surpassed the book.

In particular the 'merrenese knot'.  AFFC was a terrible book and the show has skipped right past the inconsequential points.  To address septon merribold, he need not be on the show because D&D can show the desolation of the war of the five kings without a speech;  visually HBO has allowed the editors and producers to make an a amzing show.
